This game series looks right up my alley.
However, I'm not sure if I should play the PS1, PS2 or PS3 version. To me the pre-rendered backgrounds on the PS1 look best based on videos. Which would you recommend starting off with? Thank you.

Start with PS1, it's the first one after all.

Unfortunately, it's just a time commitment thing for me. So I was hoping to see if there is one that encapsulates all the positive elements of this series. Also found out there is a PSP version as well. I appreciate the answer!

What best to enjoy the series(which is amazing) if not by playing in sequence and see how much things changed, improved and so on?

You're absolutely right. I didn't even think of it that way, I appreciate it anon. Just placed an order for the PS1 and PS2 game. They should arrive here next week.

Nice. I hope you enjoy this amazing game. My dream game is a mix of this series and the original Harvest Moon.

They're all basically the same set-up of playing as a Japanese child going somewhere for summer vacation during different time frames and just finding things to do in whatever place you're in eg: the first game is set in the Japanese countryside while another takes place in a harbor/beach town. They're very chill games.
None of them are translated though and they have a lot of Japanese in them so you won't get much out of them if you can't understand it even a little.

Honestly not a big fan of the first game.
It's not terrible or anything, but it's one of those that must be played on the real thing, or with default emulation settings. The smoothed out 3D models clash so hard with the low res backgrounds.
