Out of curiosity. How durable is the PS1? I've had problems with PS2s (not retro) that broke their disc readers, how does the PS1 fares compared to it?

Actual ‘90s kids referred to this console as the "piss-sex" IRL.

I don't get it

My fat PS1 I bought in 1996 got its disc drive fucked by 1999.

Damn, what a piece of shit. Did you use burned discs?

>> No.6702171

scph-1001 models tend to have problems fairly often, 5500s are pretty reliable, 7500s are very reliable, 90001s are reliable, One's are usually good too. I've seen more working PS1's than I've seen broken ones. I see a lot of them and have personally handled over 200 of them. Often times scratched up discs are the problem (and only severely scratched up ones) and shitty burns are problematic too. More people who have "dead or dying" lasers just have dirty lenses which are trivial to clean.

5500s are the ideal model imo, easiest to modify, parallel port, serial port and have the upgraded GPU. Usually mods are built for the 5500 as a base-line.

I thought you weren't supposed to touch the lenses

I'm not saying clean it with your tongue or something. Just wet a q-tip with alcohol, roll it on the lens, dry it with the opposite side of the q-tip. Usually that's all they need.

Yeah, I did. But I also used burned discs on my Saturn, also bought in 1996, and it still works to this day.

well that sure is reassuring!

PS1 lasers are a little more sensitive to poor burns compared to Saturn.

>>6702208
Good, they have a reputation of being unreliable and it's unfortunate.

They're usually fine but I'm picky and like the bigger case.

I have a PSOne (slim) and it works fine. I don't use it too often though. I would rather use my PS2 to play PS1 games

saliva is a pretty good cleaning fluid

Lick that lens, lick it good. Gently caress it oh baby

Had to change my laser after 15 years of service.
Only because it wouldn't read burned games that well.

I went through five PS1s over the course of it's life and 3 PS2s and I treatmy consoles well. By contrast I had the same SNES, Genesis/CD, Saturn, Dreamcast, GameCube their whole life. I even have a 360 that's been going for over a decade of almost daily use.

total pieces of shit overall. the 5xxx and 7xxx are okay. PSOne is fine too. Anything other than that and you're playing with fire.

Biggest failure point? The CD drive assembly. Get an ODE, and you'll probably be fine with any model PS1.

>> No.6703504

>>6702171
>problematic
lol
>blah blah bullshit
you realize the problem with the drive assemblies pre-5xxx is that the heat from the PSU causes warping, which causes the skipping and leads the laser to get out-of-spec? has nothing to do with "dirty" lenses you fucking plebbitor

Go look at pictures of the revisions. Notice that the most obvious changes are to the PSU and the drive assembly. Specifically, they moved the lens further away from the PSU. That was not coincidental.

Yes, now post proof of one being warped with measurements. There should be some sort of observations to prove this. You should be able to provide this.

Since this thread already exists I'll ask here. Is there anywhere to get replacement laser assemblies for the PS1 that actually work? Or would I be better off just getting a PSIO? Bought a 7500 forever ago off eBay and stuck it in a custom case, but the laser died recently.
