The genre as a whole is a very love-it-or-hate-it affair. Most people don't like dying in one hit, or having to memorize patterns and attack waves, which is why shmups are consistently as niche as they are.

I played that with my elder brother and my father over LAN all the time in 1994 and 1995.
Way more demanding than say Doom. 6DoF shooters were a pleb filter.
