Objectively a better game than DOOM.

Tom Hall was and is a true visionary, something Carmack and Romero, for all their talents and accomplishments, lack.

Rise, Based Triad

>> No.6417226

You're terribly wrong. Rise of Triad is decent, but it's also a bullshit maze game that quickly can become tiring. Doom absolutely outclassed every other FPS until Quake and Duke 3D released by every important measure. I suppose that this game is more appealing than Wolf3d in many ways, but that game also has mazey nonsense and cheapness.

Did you know that Rise of the Triad actually had digitized female enemy sprites as well the male ones we know? Both are in the games files and originally a system for randomly choosing the female or male sprite to spawn into levels was going to be used, but in the end it doubled the games memory requirements and was scrapped.

Another example of the visionary in Tom Hall

It was exceptional what they did with humor and taking what amounted to an expanded Wolf3d engine.
But... better than Doom, no way Jose. Those orthogonal levels got butt-ugly after a while. And you can only do so much with orthogonal geometry. Again, impressive and creative but by no means better.

No use arguing with Marathon fanboys. They'll bitch about how "superior" it is to Doom because it has mouselook (in reality it was just vertical shearing, and Doom didn't have it solely because id knew it looks horrible), how sophisticated its physics system is due to a few gimmicks normally you wouldn't even notice, and how it has a "deep story"...

I'd say they're roughly even, as Doom can have abstract structures in ways ROTT cannot, while ROTT puts an emphasis on jump pads and mid-air platforms.
You can only do so much with ROTT's limitations, meanwhile there's a really lot you can do with Doom if you're just creative.
That said I think ROTT does the most that's possible with 90 degree walls, and it's very admirable in that way.

I think a lot of people are just filtered by ROTT, hell I have a hard time getting through some of the levels now as opposed to breezing through them when I was a kid doing nothing else.
The soundtrack is amazing and beats Doom, Duke, etc. without any question. Also, the levels and modifiers are very memorable, the bat, Dogmode, Godmode, the Vomitorium, etc.
I think the platforming and steep difficulty just stop a lot of people from getting very far. Doesn't help that there's not an amazing source port either which may turn some folks off.
Check out the Gzdoom TC Return of the Triad if you're looking for more levels or a slightly easier ROTT experience.

Part of it is that there's no good sourceports (Kaiser is doing a proper one, but it's not out yet), and not a lot of people want to bother with the old functions.
The other is that ROTT just isn't all that famous or widely known, it's slightly obscure even in retro FPS circles. Everyone knows Doom, Quake, Duke Nukem 3D, but not a lot of people talk about ROTT. Hell, lots of people might know ROTT as "that game that people steal cool .midis from for their Doom maps", but they usually don't check out the game itself.

I asked this in the Retro FPS general but I suppose I should ask you lads as well. Do you think this review for the Rise of the Triad remake is accurate?

https://www.destructoid.com/review-rise-of-the-triad-256974.phtml

They gave it an 8.5 out of 10. I have been debating getting it, I am a big fan of the original but I skipped it at the time and now I hear wildly different things from it's great to it's total shit.

As someone who paid real money they will never get back for this piece of shit, it is cherrypicked in its accuracy. The levels are fairly lengthy, the weapons are all there and it's fast but all of that is surprisingly to its detriment. It is not a well made game and I guarantee you'll be frustrated with it in the first minute.

Pirate it if you really want to play it but don't give them money.

It's not just about the ability to look around, it's about having actual 3-dimension aiming and the necessity of precision. It adds a layer of complexity/nuance. Though I'll admit that Doom was superior in other ways (like enemy diversity) so it balances out.

the remake is definitely interesting, has a great soundtrack as well done by Andrew Hulshult. It's very janky which makes it feel somewhat similar to the original game. no
There are many good reasons why Doom was more popular and a better game

>> No.6421309

>>6417085
When criticizing Rise of the Triad it's important to remember that it was limited by its technology. Doom could have it's unique level design because of Carmack's tech allowing id to use diagonal walls. RoTT tech was upgraded Wolfenstein engine, so it could still only handle right angles, even if walls could have different heights.

However, looking at it in perspective, it was super ahead of its time. It has huge emphasis on hitscan weapons and enemies, which is exactly how FPS genre has evolved, and how 90% of modern FPS games are like. It was the first FPS game to feature guns akimbo, which is now a staple feature in most FPSes. It limits you to 2 weapons, which was ridiculously ahead of its time, and is true of most modern shooters.
It de-emphasizes ammo management, just like in most modern shooters where you rarely have to worry about running out of ammo. It had more focus on story and actual cutscenes, unlike Doom.

Rise of the Triad was the way of the future.

Oh, and it has MUCH better boss fights than Doom. Doom bosses fucking suck, and I say this as a fan of Doom.

You'll like it. I played it start to finish and had a blast. It's the people that thought it was to be "ye resurgence of old skool FPS" that are disappointed. It's a nutty, dorky riffing experience like the original.

My disappointment in the remake came from it being a very poorly put together game. It was constantly buggy, the visuals were a muddy mess, the collision detection was all over the place and they turned Havana Smooth into dubstep. It needed a lot of polish and, judging Interceptor's other games, is not something they could ever deliver.
