Has anybody tried to explain why so many immediate sequels on NES were inferior to the originals?

That's the best non-3D one, though.

Metroid 2 isn't substantially worse than Metroid.

Nigga, Metroid 2 was better.

Mario 2 (All-Stars version) has always been my favorite NES mario. I really like tubers.

Metroid fucking sucks. I only play the first one with the Justin Bailey code and that's it, Metroid experience ended.

All the following games have stripteases, some have skinsuits and all variations of the powersuit are pretty sexy haha

Metroid doesn't fucking suck. Super Metroid trumps every Metroid, but the others are still enjoyable in their own right. The original game is pretty comfy.

The original game is a classic and it's comfy, but it also sucks. Fact. Good ending, dough.

Castlevania 2 isn't just hard. It's lacking in other ways, such as having only three boss fights and they're nearly impossible to lose.

Some sequels were worse, some were much better. You're just chery-picking.

For me is Dragon Quest II.
Also many developers back then weren't afraid of experimenting like they are today, of all the sequel OP names only SMB2 hasn't clicked with me.
Even if they are "bad" all of them have leave a huge impact on their respective franchises.

I like Link's Awakening, but haven't gotten too into it, through no fault of the game, which is shockingly great for a Game Boy game. Nevertheless, Zelda II's huge maps are fun to explore; etc and I hold that it is still the best non-3D Zelda, handily.
A Link to the Past just doesn't look right so that's not real competition. Maybe one day after beating Link's Awakening, I'll rate it higher, but it'll need lots of luck to unseat Zelda II.
