Does /vr/ play randomizers?
Link to the Past randomizer is my current favorite.
Been thinking of trying Super Metroid randomizer, but I've never 100% that so I feel like it's going to be a slog starting out.

>> No.6318142

We used to have regular threads for randomizers just like we do for romhacks, but that was back before we got invaded hard by /v/ and the board filled up with people who don't actually want to play videogames. LttP randomizer is one of the most polished, and it really helps there's a website that lets you mark which items you got where so you know where you can go next.

Beyond that, the SMB3 and SMBW randomizers make for some fun times, and the Beyond Chaos randomizer for FF6 has an Ancient Cave mode that is a blast.

>> No.6318148

The ALttP-SM hybrid randomizer is neat. I also really like the OoT one, there's a plethora of customization options to make it as daunting or as palettable of an experience as you want i to be.

A long time ago I played a hack that turned FFV into an Ancient Cave.
That one was really fun because you had to figure out how to work with your current classes and limited resources.

The FF5 original is neat, but the lack of save points makes it an emulator and save state only game. Unless you want to sit there and grind for hours.

Any good Final Fantasy randomizers? I once played with one for FF1 and it was unplayable garbage.

Pokemon randomizers are cool. Fire Emblem too but the randomizers are buggy.

what are the pokemon randomizers like? do they randomize which pokemon show up where and at which level?

You can pick and choose what gets randomized.
On top of what you already mentioned, Starter pokemon are random, trainer and gym pokemon are random.
If you're crazy enough, you can randomize stats and moves as well.

I played a lot of LttPR for races, but I'm usually not quick enough to win. I like the freshness that randomizer gives though, it does place a stronger empasis on knowing logic than mechanical efficiency.

>> No.6323980

I usually play LoZ1, FF1, FF:FE, and SM/Z3. Link to the Past and Super Metroid is probably my favorites out of the bunch, in LttP I'm good enough to quickly complete seeds on hard difficulty or below, I can do most of the tricks in Super Metroid to get around on the default VARIA settings, but when you jam the two together, the have great interplay between each other with going back and forth between the games. Only trouble with SM/Z3 is that runs can take upwards of two and a half hours if the thing is set up cruelly.

Not sure if this is the one you played or not, but it's more than possible that the "unplayable garbage" was due bad settings, a bad seed, or just not knowing randomiser strats.

I went out of my way to cherry pick hard seeds for Free Enterprise.
Don't matter what characters you end up with. they're all more or less viable by end game.
Depending on if you set Edward to into spoon or not, that is.

I mean, that's more or less how the original Ancient Cave worked in Lufia. It's supposed to be emulating a roguelike.
I actually find it weird how many hacks refer to themselves as "Ancient Cave" despite having save points and reloading on death. Isn't that just a standard randomizer?

I play the NES Goonies 2 randomizer they have up on romhacking.net, it moves all the items and goonies around to different rooms changing how you approach getting to the other half of the map. I like seeing how I can get where I need to without certain items yet.

There's also someone out there working on a Pokemon Red randomizer that randomizes key items as well, which I'm really excited for. Pokemon randomizers are a load of fun but progression is always the same, which after a while is kinda boring. So mixing it up a bit more, in theory should be fun.

In fairness, Z2 is a bunch of tiles, ALttP uses some funky hex grid setup that would be a LOT harder to randomize and come up with something playable.

I think "Ancient Cave" is supposed to signify that the modded game takes place in a "dungeon" scenario where you have to keep going down floors

It's not obvious?

Z2:
4-sided tile, either walkable or mountain/water.
In order to make a workable map, you just need a single tile line between objectives that is walkable. Literally just need to make sure 1-2 tiles touching a tile are walkable.
Majority of randomizer logic would be just checking to make sure it's not creating unaccessable areas, and that key items are reachable without X if you don't have X yet.
ALttP:
Map is made out of 6 sided hex units, multiple heights, with ladders and jumpable cliffs.
In order to make a workable map, you need to shove these hexes together and make sure they don't suddenly shift height or create an ladder without an exit. Literally would need to have every single tile tied to it's own ruleset to make sure it gets used right.
Good chance a large number of randomizations would just result in world maps with a lot of random forest and mountain tiles shoved in a random flat area.

You know how the overworld map in Z2 randomized looks like a lot of gibberish? Imagine spending the entire game walking around and fighting in gibberish just like that.

A few months ago I made an FF4 Free Enterprise seed that I found to be just barely unbeatable. Can you win it? I think it should be possible, but maybe only if you do something tedious. I had fun trying though. Give it a try if you want:
https://www.mediafire.com/file/k3bqfkyevs76zpw/FF4FE.bBAAAAQAAAAAAAAD44QMAAIABgQOGExCgCA.RQ4LMJVBVD.smc/file

(You can also just copy the bBA...gCA text from the filename and paste that into the generator at the randomizer's homepage, but it probably won't give you the same file because they've updated the randomizer since I made this. So you'll have to trust me and/or your antivirus program if you want to try this.)

>> No.6327084

>>6326992
sounds like it wouldn't be A LOT harder to do, it's just a few extra steps/checks(and it could be slowly implemented by first ignoring multiple heights/ladders/cliffs and later adding this after the main generation function is considered working ) but a concern that the generated map will look "bad"

you program the "a lot harder" feature in smaller, broken down pieces . it's a method of taking on a hard task. you can add the heights after you get the main generation done...

I find the most interesting aspects are the aesthetic ones, randomizing ALttP doesnt do much other than forcing to check every chest in the game. Super Metroid on the other hand, is really fun randomized.

I like the SOTN randomizer, but I just wish it was a bit more balanced. It doesn't seem to be very... well... random. It's also usually exceptionally easy due to all the crazy ass weapons you can get. It'd be more interesting if items had a weight and only showed up in certain areas but I suppose that's probably not easily done.

Artemis Edward isn't bad either, I've seen people down everything with him and berserk to ramp his damage output. Not ideal, but not horrible if it's all you have to work with. Cid has a similar capability, but with far more health.

Forgot the little faggot could take a bow... probably his best role too. Back row. Not into as hard of hits even though him with spoon and adamant = unstoppable.
For Cid I just into axes. Seems most fitting for a madlad like Cid. Not to mention that by the end you'll be doing "good enough" dps to down Tysonmus without too much grief.

My personal favorite run so far has been FoSoYa's Angels. Where I took Foosey as my front and center and put Palom, Porom, Rydia, and Rosa in his entourage.
Also fun things to note: Multiple Kains..... oddly satisfying.

I primarily play the new Majora's Mask randomizer, but I occasionally play the randomizers for Zelda 1 + Metroid, ALttP + Super Metroid, OoT, Metroid Prime, Wind Waker, and Paper Mario TTYD. The combo randomizers are cool as fuck. The only one I really do the glitches-required logic in is Majora's Mask, mostly because I've done it enough to find it boring as fuck to do it normally.

I suggest changing the Preset to "Normal - Open World" (from Character Gating) - Character Gating means that you need the characters in question to activate their events (e.g you can't fight Vargas without having Sabin in your party) which significantly reduces your freedom especially if you get gated by particularly annoying random bosses like Chardarnook.

I also suggest turning off level scaling

>> No.6334913

>>6334281
I will take these suggestions as they seem like a fair and interesting thing for a first run.
Although The concept of Character Gating seems like it adds a decent layer of challenge to this.
Will be interesting to see if it gives me more grief than certain sections of BNW.
