Getting dark first is easier because lowering reputation is easier than increasing it and there is only a couple of quest that give you negative karma. But if you already did a lot of rep-increasing quest, I think it would be a waste to just dump your reputation now, later you may would'n have enough rep from regular quests for Saintly and have to wait til you get increase from the main quest. And generally I find light magic way more useful that dark.
Btw, reputation is constantly lowers/increases toward zero and higher/lower it is, more you loose/gain it with every day passing.

>> No.6264620

The problem is I'm already 0 rep right now.

I was floating around 400 rep, then I did the cannibal temple quest in Bootleg Bay and learned that selling bones gets you 1k a pop. What the hell I thought, picked up every bone in the place as I did it and then went back and picked up all the bones from Bootleg Bay I'd previously ignored. Sold them all and leveled up, getting a bunch of new skill masteries etc and clearing off things I'd been putting off.

Only just noticed now that it fucked over my reputation. Kill me now.

>> No.6264629

>>6264620
Donation to the temple will get you to 200 rep, 2 bards should (I think, but not really sure) get you +2 levels of reputation. So you have to get 400+ karma from quests to get to 1000. Every day rep will decrease 1%, so take that into account.

Donation to temple of Baa will get you +200 rep if your rep <-800, donation to regular temple will get you +200 rep with rep <200.
Duper, Pirate and Gypsy will lower rep for 1 level each.
You don't really have to kill NPCs to get -1000, just running around the town and being a dick to everyone is easier and much more funny than plain dumb murder-hoboing, for me at least.

The main line quests give a full reputation category each aside from Loretta's because she is trying to jew the population. When you expose the traitor it is something like 4-5 categories by itself moving you from respectable to angelic/saintly by itself. As mentioned, it's easier to go dark first, donate back to respectable than focus on the main line quests you would be doing anyway. The ship to Eel Infested Waters leaves the northern boat in Silver Cove (not the one in the city) on Thursdays only. The actual trainer is hidden in the back entrance of the southern inn of Eel Infested Waters. It's meant to be hard to find. While you are there set a beacon if you can because the miscellaneous shop has level 5 items including the occasional items of body/water/dark/light magic, plus there will be a quest later that brings you back there.

None of the campaigns are that hard. Your main goal is to tech to whatever the better T4 unit is and have your heroes focus on combat, scouting, and a magic school. Once your heroes get to GM archery you can destroy huge packs with just your hero before the enemy even gets a turn.

This problem has been solved almost entirely by HoMMV breaking up initiative from speed. It's both better for balance and allows to better diversify various creatures when you have stacks that are slow AND don't go far vs stacks that are slow AND go far but aren't as tough. HoMMV had some really good fundamental ideas like that (then H7 fucked it all up by keeping initiative and speed but for some godforsaken reason bringing back discreet turns).

MM6 guy here who was trying to do a bunch of enchanting a week or two ago:
Man, I still can't get any good modifiers and I dunno what's wrong. I hoofed it over to the asshole of the world (Paradise Valley) and purchased a number of items from the 'special' section of the local magic shop, including a pair of ultimate boots and a scarab ring.

Even with those though, I'm still only getting the exact same shitty modifiers I was getting 20+ levels ago from items bought on Mist. I just really wanna get some cool modifiers on my equipment, but this feels fruitless.

>> No.6266908

Enchant item just gives level 3 effects no matter what level the item itself is. If you want the really powerful enchants you have to savescum the shop and buy it directly.

>> No.6266927

>>6266875
Most useful enchants you can get from spell is "of Protection", "of Defense +12", "of Thievery", "of Regeneration", "of Mana", "of Recovery" (depending on how you adjust its effect in Grayface patch, in original game it does nothing) and "of Antique".
Item's quality doesn't influence enchantments you get, you only need it to cost more than 450 gold (250 for weapons).
Easiest way to get high-end items is to get a shitton of golden pyramids from Circus (needs a 75-200 in a stat to win consistently) and exchange them for tier 6 items in Abdul's oasis in Dragonsand.

Yeah the economy is way different.

In homm3, a capitol of almost any(I think there's like 1-2 exceptions where you're a few hundred short) can support the weekly dwelling cost.
While in homm2 you have to take care with your money and only buy what you can afford.
I loved liches as a kid, but god they're hard to justify considering their cost and low hp and how easy they die to spells.

I was playing with my nephew just a few days ago and our armies were basically just bone dragons+skeletons.
With 4 castles(2 of which were necromancers) I started buying up mummies and zombies.

Also buying unupgraded units and then upgrading them costs a lot more than just buying them upgraded.

Estates on your main heroes is nothing to scoff at in homm2 btw.

Not him, but I played a map I recently wanted to play on Impossible difficulty last week.

I did fine, started to build up a nice little army by week 3 and had mostly upgraded my town / beaten a bunch of stuff in my area.

Then the AI came in, I swear he had a doomstack twice my size, bulldozed through the level 6 creatures between us and smashed through my main hero like it was fucking nothing. Haven't played Homm3 again since.

It seems to me that V has the best balance between new ideas and proper implementation.
Though, given that it was made by Nival (who are autistic slav TBS designers, thus, the people most likely to understand the fundamentals) makes this somewhat unsurprising.

It's... alright. You can definitely get some fun time out of it if you aren't turboautistic about what Heroes gameplay should look like and it definitely has its community but there's a TON of rough edges (seriously, you can write an essay on in how many ways it went wrong) and I was never able to get online multiplayer to work without bugging out. Perhaps the worst offence of VII is that it just attempts to replicate III, V and VI but the devs didn't really understand Heroes that well or were able to produce enough QoL and content for the game to take off.

The Modifier column is a multiplier to the HP for the Modified column, used to determine how much each hp costs when their modifier applies.
So a Steel Golem only takes half damage from spells, so against spells they only pay half for each hp, so the modifier is 0.5

Should I help the dwarves (mission 3 in homm2)?
It will just lower the final rating a bit, right? I want to see more maps rather than skipping them.
Also what faction do you prefer here? I think sorceress is really strong and straightforward compared to wizard (titans are affordable way too late to make a difference) and knight (t6 is shit, no fliers, worst t1 unit).

>> No.6268926

I did that mission and still got the best rating, and the Dwarven Alliance makes later maps much easier. It is a weird map and not very fun though, in my opinion.

Oh and I also prefer Sorc.
Mostly because you'll find more dwarves on this map, and it's nice to stack them up a bit more, I think I've always done that before, but now that I think about it I could see Knight working just fine.
Beefing up the huge dwarf stacks with the knight stats, the dwarves can all be upgraded in hill forts(which I assume were on the map I don't remember).

That's really unfair. 6 and 7 don't really play like 3. It needs direction and vision to be successful but they don't have to be entirely new direction and vision. It's not like it's impossible to sell a turn-based tactical game in this day and age (Fire Emblem series comes to mind). But first and foremost it must be a good, finished, polished fucking game that people would actually want to play. I'm working through H7 content right now and the game is a buggy, poorly thought out piece of shit, that's what turned people away, not that it's an awkward lovechild of H5 and H6.

I mean, this game has Item and Enchantment tiers, and if I remember correctly the Spell caps at Magic Tier 3.
See http://mm6world.ru/6_modif.htm

The main reason you want to farm Dragons past some point is that they drop Tier 6 gear with the possibility of Tier 6 enchantments.

"too slow" eh?
In the modern day media where FTL, Into the Breach, Total War, Darkest Dungeon and other games do well?

My main complaint about 5 is that it takes a very fast TBS game, and slows it down almost a tenfold with mediocre 3D animations.
It looks pretty, but the speed cost stacks up badly as the series went on to 6 and 7.
I think a core problem is that TBS is a very very very fast genre, if you allow it to be.
But if its a slow genre due waiting for animations and input autism, you are failing the genre.

Addendum:
The need for good fantasy games has still not gotten away and will not go away.

Is it really that good? I swear to god, this game has the biggest "fuck you player" design I've seen in a while. Or it's me being an idiot who doesn't understand how this game works. Somehow I've been missing 90% of the loot and apparently I've build my character wrong (mage/warrior), so halfway through the game he is useless.

Not him, but it was the first M&M game i was actually able to play, possibly because I'm a brainlet, but i just couldn't play the older ones, it always went terribly.
Either way, i liked ot very much, and would say it's great if it wasn't for some game breaking bugs that literally stopped me from progressing and required me to edit game files to play it. I think at the very least it gave me enough of an idea of how to play m&m games, and it gets tons of points for that. Like the other anon said, it's more linear than other m&m games, but it doesn't make it bad, because it makes the game more accessible to people who never played those games.

Question from that one brainlet who never played MM before. Which is better - MM 6 or 7?
I am personally leaning towards 7, because it seems it has more robust character creator, but then I have no experience with MM games.

>> No.6273738

6 had better graphical design and I always felt like more sidequesting to be done, but 7 builds on 6 in a lot of the design space. You're also locked from the higher level spells and potions in 7 so there's a more satisfying curve rather than being able to cheese right out the gate

It's actually enjoyable and could be used as a base to make something great if they try their hand again with another entry.. The tile combat is... unique, not really my thing. You can easily fuck up your builds which makes the game unplayable since enemies don't respawn, meaning you cant farm and level up--which means you have to restart if you're stuck on an enemy. The world is comfy and its relaxing to play, just not something you'll return to. Imo, it's the best thing ubi has done so far, gives me a smidge of hope.

You should be able to change your builds anytime, too, so that people playing healers don't have a shit time lvling solo, cuz otherwise the game would be all dps and no other classes. Spells like fly or town portal avaible to everyone for free movement across the maps, not restricted to only mages. I had to acquire more gear, skill points, better enchantment levels, more spells, and come back later, and delaying levelling until I was ready.
And even then it was close.

There is also a few level ranges where too many forms of status effect party wipe monsters where spawned, and you lack the tools to deal with it.
It IS the hardest promotion quest.

Probably the best way to test it would be to have a small map, get a hint in the tavern, then have 3 or 4 heroes over two turns do nothing but dig out each tile in that area and reload until one strikes paydirt.

Alternative idea: in the editor make the smallest possible map with a single island in the middle with two towns on it and as little space as possible, play it two player hotseat and just set out to dig up the entirety of the little island and see if you get it or not.

Yeah it is, I know that for sure. Well artifact, not grail.
I've done that twice.
Once on a really small map, and once using the tavern hint where the map had a smallish swamp area and the tavern said it was there.
This map has a small snow area so I restarted until I got a fitting hit, but now I'm wondering if this is actually the snow hint.

I think the best luck I've had was getting the +5 to alls word or the +6 to all helmet in week one, it was on thousand islands and for some reason you could land on an island behind the creature stack defending the artifact and grab it. It's such an insane amount of gold in homm2, 10k a turn.
Yet, you can still not have enough gold for everything on large maps.
I was playing as Sorceress on Lost Continent once and got it, kept the goose on a random sorc on a boat in a bay, to make sure no surprise dimension door hero would pounce on it. At first I could start buying all the creatures, but fairly quickly I had to get frugal again and just settle for the more worthwhile creatures.

I don't really miss it in homm2, but more digging for artifacts would be nice.'
Maybe different sets of obelisks leading to different treasures. The standard artifacts are already so powerful in homm3 so I don't think taht adding ultimate shield and such is viable, but maybe you could have the Grail map for Red Obelisks, then a high tier artifact for Blue Obelisks like Helm of Heavenly Enlightenment, Sword of Judgement.

Generally you just want the fattest stack of ranged units, as they offer the most cost efficiency and help you clear out the map with minimal losses. So this means everything from hobgoblins to titans. Lategame though you want dragons and such obviously. Skip the slow units that reduce your movement, and only buy them if you're suddenly sieged.

Necromancer is a bit different, you want to build up giant death balls of skeletons.

It really depends on the map you're playing though, you want to be flexible and prepared to buy whatever units are necessary.

I wanted to dig up the artifact, but apparently it was under the lava land and that's way too big of an area.

I think I might play this mission again soon and not rush the enemy, since after the intial push against necro they couldn't really do anything. Last I played this mission it was more interesting because the AIs could build proper armies to attack me, and I suffered heavy losses early on to the knight armies, until I had a proper flight/ranged army from sorc/wizard that could take the enemies out before they nuked me.

Now I just need to decide who should deserves the honor of killing Archibald.

In the Archibald campaign crushing the dwarves not only gets all ogres joining you, but all dwarves instantly run from you. The Necromancer Guild option gives a level 5 hireling available in every mission.

The optional dragon mission makes all dragons join you, but it isn't as useful as it sounds since you will have stupidly powerful armies already. It gives you the ability to pick up some extras if you get lucky on the gauntlet mission though.

On the Roland campaign you have to save the Sorceress Guild anyway so you get the hireling regardless. The optional scenario to save the dwarves makes all dwarves join you.

Of note though is if you take the traitor option you lose all previous awards on either campaign.

AI is cautious about approaching on high difficulty. So it takes movement boosting landmarks, spells, or castles to pick off some of the enemy heroes in the open if you have a higher powered army yourself. But the AI can behave poorly when facing multiple heroes of slightly less army strength or simply at castle juggling.

It does feel a bit like trying to plug a bunch of water leaks with your bare hands on the big maps. The AI will out boom you even when down castle count and income. You might notice on impossible that you'll only get one top tier monster from a creature dwelling but the computer will get 5. If you're not able to flag all the map resources, it seems to exacerbate the problem.

Breaking the game aka just winning on impossible to me generally happens about the time I can stack multiple tier 7s monsters on one or two heroes. If you can break through the AI's main heroes, then the game is just logistics. So maintaining superiority generally involves stealing AI castles on first days of the week, tricking it into pin cushioning itself against your castle walls and turrets, sniping wandering enemy heroes, canvasing all the map resources, letting the computer pay to place buildings in your castles, and making good market trades when you need. Keep in mind that the computer will probably find combination artifacts, the grail, and whatever else early. Just accept that you're playing the machine at the hardest difficulty and there will be some luck involved in the process of winning or losing.

The actual dragon city is in the northwest and it's guarded by a bunch of dragons, then you have to fight more dragons inside to take the place. Your best play is to move west immediately with your main force and take the cities, and try to pick up the rest of the items around the map with your other characters. You can beat it in 15-17 days without too much trouble if you get map control early.

Dragon Master (Evil Campaign 7)
-------------------------------
The Ogre Alliance is necessary for my strategy. Don't lose time worrying
about your two warlock enemies. They won't have time to become real
nuisances before you capture the Dragon castle. I won in 10 days. It should
be quite tough to do better.
1) Start with a barbarian castle. Their pathfinding skills will help you in
the western desert.
2) Hire 2 other barbarian heroes and make them give their troops to your
starting barbarian hero.
3) Do not lose time building up your castle. It's not required in this
scenario.
4) The 2 secondary barbarian heroes should collect ogre stacks that are a
little removed from the road. ASAP, they should transfer those ogres to the
principal hero.
5) Your primary barbarian hero will go west following the road.
6) Take any nearby ogre stacks and upgrade them to ogre lords when you pass
nearby the Hill Fort.
7) Do not deviate from the road very much until you reach the desert.
8) Attack the first red dragon stack in the desert...
9) Make sure your ogre lords are split in two equal stacks and that they
are in the 2nd and 3rd place on your roster (I had 2 stacks of about 43
ogre lords before the first dragon battle)
10) With correct positioning, the flying dragons will soon flame each other
while attacking you (the sandwich dragon strategy again :-)
11) Go north through the desert, destroy any dragon stacks blocking your
way.
12) Attack the Dragon castle !

After half an hour of testing, I've found it's 100% possible to get a day 7 win if things go right for you and you reset for good starting skills and get a little luck. Maybe day 6 if the stars align just right.

For a day 7 win you need the starting hero to have Expert Pathfinding + Basic Logistics, dump the Orcs and Ogres in town so you just have goblins and move a little way down to path so you're out of the way.
Hire a Barbarian and dump any orcs, move over near the main guy. Hire a Wizard and dump the Halflings, split the boar stack you have and grab the Orcs from town, pass one boar to the hired Barb then have the secondary Barb pass the Goblins to your main guy and start headed NE for the Ogre stack by the ore mine.
Turn 2 the secondary Barb grabs the ogre stack, brings them as far back as he can and the Wizard finishes the job passing all roughly 40 Ogres to the main hero. Main hero grabs the next two ogre stacks and visits the Hill Fort.
Next turns are basically your main hero moving with ruthless efficiency and grabbing a few Goblins on the way. There are basically zero movement points spare.

A day 6 win would theoretically require Advanced Logistics or better along with the Expert Pathfinding, and the first fight that happens on day 3 being something easy like Mummies with it getting a level up for Expert Logistics. (Both my fights with my best randomized starting hero were Grand Elves, so I wasn't going to test if those fights would give enough experience for a level.)

Was actually pretty fun to test and optimize.

Kastore looks like a dick because he is one.

Well I didn't expect them to have the black tower up in this warlock castle.

With Jojosh massive defense I think I'll just take black dragons with him, and leave the barbarian army to defend.
I was avoiding most fights with the purple necromancer and the red warlock because I didn't want them to bully me with Lightning Bolts, but dragons solve that.
My plan was to go get the thunder helmet which I spotted, and maybe steal the ice cloak from blue to deal with Sandros 10 spell power.

Archibald didn't get along with Sandro? That's weird.
I'm yet to play his campaign.

You should finish it and send it to maps4heroes

I considered it back when I had just made it, but after playing it I didn't think it really lived up to the homm2 versions difficulty.
Despite it being 1v7 compared to the homm2 version which is 1v5, and despite splitting the players town between inferno and necropolis.
Added an underground area with 3 fortress towns, and a lava area with 3 conflux towns.

I guess it doesn't need to be that difficult though so I should look into fixing anything that may be wrong with it and uploading it when I have more time.

Killed Sandro a long time ago, but my inventory filled up with his junk.
Missed these items.
Not that my barbarians have used a lot of spells.

Jojosh and Atlas were sanic fast this game.
Jojosh got 2 speed items in the swamp corner, while Atlas got 2 speed items in the desert corner

It seems they buy units from the bottom up, not top down. Its honestly kinda dissapointing, I wish there was a patch. Although to be fair titans are way too expensive even when your a human player.
>>6293797
The artifact system in that game was a downside. Heroes 3 did good with it.

I made a smaller version of Dominion for heroes 3 years ago. It was really good but I lost the file and have been lost myself ever since. I wish there was a full size conversion out there somewhere. Dominion was my favorite heroes map of all time hands down.

I think his algorithm of buying depends on a power of certain unit compared to its cost.
Here's the chart of creatures power relatively to a peasant, maybe you will be able to read the article with google translate even.
