How is this shit fun to anyone?
>ridiculous amount of backtracking in order to merge armies/power up heroes
>navigating 4 heroes is just annoying
>real actions only starts like 1 hour into the game
>it all comes down to who can grab resources/create/merge armies/power up cities and heroes the fastest and most efficient way - zero strategy, just a glorified puzzle game
I'm not saying it isn't charming, just that it doesn't seem like a good concept to me. It just seems like a clunkier and more tedious Fire Emblem or Advance Wars. Seriously the backtracking kills it for me.

> ridiculous amount of backtracking in order to merge armies/power up heroes
but anon... there's no need to return to your town after week 1
> navigating 4 heroes is just annoying
Is navigating both your hands and legs annoying? jeez...
>real actions only starts like 1 hour into the game
By 1 hour into the game the map is already finished

In conclusion: pleb who used to play on XL maps till month 6th complains because he actually don't know how to play.

Sounds like you're playing on a large-ass map on an easy difficulty. That's how it works when set up that way, but it's your fault for setting it up like this in the first place.

I suggest to actually play the game, especially on multi, and then tell with a straight face to just about anyone it wasn't fun and engaging

Mage guild. Scholar only works up to level 4 spells.
In before guild+library rush.

Play some maps with a time limit on them. I remember the demo of the game had one of the levels with a 1 month time limit; you started as Castle and you only had wood & ore mines, precious resources were on corner islands which took a lot of time to get, so it was too difficult to get level 7 units.
Had to micromanage your stuff so much to be able to beat that level, and it really taught you how to play. Going for the gold instead of the XP in treasure chests made a gigantic difference for example.

I don't remember the name of the map, it's an S sized one with you starting on an island, connected via underground passages to a Dungeon in the upper left, and a Necro on the bottom right (on cursed fields), you could either use boats or underground to get there. The precious mines were all on small islands in the opposite corners. In the final game, the map had no time limit and so it played COMPLETELY DIFFERENT.

Also, in the demo, the Castle used the Stronghold music for some reason.

Newfag mistake. First couple weeks should be a frantic dash to claim all the resources you can.

dont forget about the dice rolls for what magic spells you get from building the mage towers and what skills your heroes get when leveling up

Out of all the RNG in HoMM this might be the dumbest to complain about. If you chose what skill you leveled up with you would just go Logistics and Earth/Air Magic every single time.

I don't understand how someone could find navigating 4 heroes annoying. Is it really hard to keep track of 4 heroes? It's not even in realtime. Are you some kinda brainlet?

main thing I dont like is
>lose literally 1 battle
>GG game over you're fucked no chance of making a come-back
hell you dont even need to lose a battle, even winning a battle but taking heavy losses at any point basically permanently fucks you.
so it encourages either cheese tactics, borderline cheaty tactics or complete expert knowledge of the game

The risk/reward element is part of what makes it fun for people. You can play it safe and only take fights you know are completely free, but then you'll probably be blown out by anyone that's more aggressive.

Or you are so fucking new to a 20+ yo game that you don't know the basics? Don't worry, most of veterans don't know them either

This only applies if you are playing multiplayer and on tourney rules. Otherwise, you can easily come back, no matter what.
Have you even played the game with your buddies?

I'm watching homm 3 tourneys sometimes and it's not always like that, losing main heroes just leave the battlefield near the end if opponent doesn't have shackles of war. So comeback is real in certain situations.
