From pure gameplay-stand point, it's the Raceway tracks (Mario, Luigi, Royal). Still the best circuits in any go-kart game ever.
But otherwise, for me, it's Toad's Turnpike, the comfiest.

It has great sound design from the crowds and turning into the part where you see yourself on the giant screen was an astounding feeling in those times. Every track oozes with soul, that's half the reason to continue playing this game with friends. It's just charming to experience. The items are what make it interesting, especially because it's not fucked like in later games and actually truly random to an extent, to where you can get lightning in second place. Try doing that in mk8

You must be out of your mind if you think driving in a circle and finishing the track in 5 seconds is fun.
Either that or you hate this track.
Shortcuts are good and all, especially when there's a risk involved in them which makes you have to decide whether or not it's worth going for them. But in this case there is no risk and you just skip the entire track by jumping back and forth over a wall right at the starting line.

The feather? Probably because they had enough problems with collision detection and slope physics as is was, plus there'd be less opportunity to use it outside of the perfectly flat mode7 tracks with their angular corners and denser grid of obstacles. It was planned though.

But I agree it woulda been fun. Particularly since to be useful with the different track elevations and railings/obstacles with vertical scale they would have needed to make it launch you comically high.

They completely ruined the feel of it in MK8. It was supposed to be a dimly lit, dusk/night time track with most of the lighting coming from the occasional street lamp but mostly only from other cars headlights. The MK8 version looks like a cyberpunk monstrosity.

When I was a kid our family would often play MK64, it was a household staple. Once we were on Wario Stadium and my dad managed to hit me with a red shell pretty close to the start of one of the laps and it knocked me over the left wall. I proceeded to head towards the finish line again, thinking it set me back a lap and to my surprise, the counter increased, meaning he basically gave me a lap for free. No shortcuts my ass, one of my fondest family gaming memories is tied to an accidental shortcut in this stage.

Now hard-mode, do it yourself with your own shell.
