Probably because SR showcases what can actually be done with the two sound chips when used properly.

Lots of 3rd party Devs just used the shitty preset samples that came with GEMS to cobble together a "soundtrack", this often gets used as a stick to beat the system with by many on this board.

Eliminate Down actually uses just the YM2612 for the soundtrack and still manages to sound better than a lot of games on the system.

I do for myself and that's all I care about. What constitutes good and bad music is totally subjective. Follin's something like a chiptune Steve Vai--a virtuoso with bad taste and barely any sense of restraint. He tends to make music that's impressive instead of beautiful, evocative, or good. He's definitely not as terrible as someone like Vai, but he's in the ballpark

The whole point of an FM synthesis chip is that you can adjust the waveform to create (aka synthesize) new sounds.
What you're thinking of is wavetable synthesis like what you'd find in some MIDI sound card from the 90s, where you have built-in samples that are used to generate sound.

they were overused a lot due to convenience and because they didn't have access to better m68k or z80 music routines. a few software houses developed their own in-house music routines that blew competing companies away. this is why some megadrive musicians sound amazing while others sound like your average general midi songs with instruments mapped in the same way as general midi playing poor quality pcm samples.

no shit. less operators = less combinations of frequencies/ADSR/LFO/etc.etc.

megadrive's 4 operators are really easy to deal with and you can create some very complex sounds if you know the hardware and you're not a knuckle dragging baboon with the IQ of wet paint. megadrive is also capable of pumping out some very high quality PCM samples at the sacrifice of 1 FM voice. so.. 5x FM voices, 1x PCM channel, 3x PSG.. you could have more PCM channels using software mixing. the m68k is more than capable of doing that.

As much love as I have for the 2612, I do have to wonder how much more expensive it would have been to have a proper 2151 instead. Much higher quality and arcade perfect ports could have been possible, since that's what most arcades were using anyhow.

>I even recorded music in cassette and listened to it thousands of times. I might have bad memory in some things because time has passed on, but sure it wasn't that earpiercing or my ear should have been destroyed by now.
again, you probably have got access to a higher fidelity speakers now, as opposed to previous decades old avg. consumer setup, and, with a magic of equalizer, you can easily tone down high frequencies to your liking (because the hardware chip itself could and did go as high as 48khz and beyond)

>Just compare this and tell me the first video sounds like real hardware:
I never claimed it was hardware record - only that it was an acceptable rendition of the source material.
Btw, I looked up a vid comparing hardware to software versions
https://youtu.be/tc5WABqwiVU
The only remotely noticeable difference is aforementioned higher frequency (which can be tweaked in EQ), but not a single note is distorted or off-clock.

In terms of bad playback due to faulty emulation
i checked the links and literally two of those (Ristar and Alien Soldier) had bad note cut-offs - some 90%.

It's all about which chipset composer is most comfortable to work with.

NES soundtrack for Battletoads & Double Dragon sounds objectively better than SMD port (by the same token the Cool Spot on SMD is miles ahead of shitty SNES version, despite SNES being potentially more versatile at representing real life instruments through combination of MIDI engine and samples).

Have you tried to read the rest of the post? I've literally offered couple of examples where objectively inferior, previous gen hardware outputs less disharmonic sound than the more advanced one.

You don't have to take my statement quite literally - rarely it's the same person that's doing the job across platforms / for other ports.
The implication is that the song that has been specifically written with main/first platform's capabilities in mind and then ported to a different platform (sometimes as a mere afterthought / simple code adaptation/recompilation) will always detriment the qualities and little details of the first version.
For example, the previously mentioned Ys III was initially developed for PC98 and only years later it was ported to consoles. The initial version was where the all the effort was put out, whereas the port was done with little attention to such tiny details as to how smooth channel 1 sounds.

That's pretty interesting, sounds pretty similar. However I'm pretty obsessed with the Yu-No OST and a lot of stuff just sounds way off, there's whole layers missing sometimes. Not surprising since it the PC98 uses 16 layers of sound. But barring that each individual layer is actually outputting a very similar sound
