Playing Mystical Ninja 64 for the first time. Tried some years ago but I wasn't really feeling so I dropped right at the initial town. This time I started determined to see more of the game, and boy, am I having a good time. It scratches my Mega Man Legends itchy too. Some places are very empty with too much space to walk but I guess this was a problem a lot of early 3D titles have. Oh and I also had to look out for a FAQ/online manual when I reached the robot fight cause I was getting ass kicked and the game doesn't teach you the moves. I just got the batteries for Sasuke, now to start bombing those cracked doors.

tl;dr: Goemon is fun and I'm having fun.

I'm using the new ParaLLEl through RetroArch that just got updated some days ago, plays perfectly but if you don't disabel some of the N64 visuals like AA, blur or dithering, the game can get some slowdowns in some parts. There's the first three SNES games (play the patched version of 1, perferably). I like the original "Kid Ying" version and its "pizza" edits (it would be cool to have a hack that includes those things but adds SRAM save and possibly also the cut content, someday), but the fan-retranslation (on Romhacking.net) is just far better and this is coming from someone who appreciates localizations as much as he does new translations. Grab a bro to play with, as all those games are multiplayer. If you want a break, try the two arcade-style NES games or the two NES Gaiden RPGs.

He's not wrong. "Shemale" is a decent translation of "newhalf". "Tranny" is a slur, so the translation is incorrect (the character isn't self-deprecating or anything, they're just afraid of coming out to their boyfriend, which is played for laughs). It's like translating "baka" as "fucking retard" or "daisuki" as "would fuck the this outta". It's jsut shitty translation.
But fantranslators are autistic amateurs, so no wonder they're stupid. I used to play fantranslations a lot until I realized how unsalvageably badly they're all written.

I finished. Great game, the last dungeon had great music. I missed 5 cat statues.
But then I returned to the save before the space to get all the cats. I managed to get all, except one piece. I have no idea where it is.

I looked at this video but by the old comments it's supposedly missing one too.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=adzYyuXQxic

I checked this FAQ, I didn't returned to every location yet but I feel like I got them all
https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/n64/198022-mystical-ninja-starring-goemon/faqs/32089

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/n64/198022-mystical-ninja-starring-goemon/answers/380809-the-45-cat-statues

So, any help of where it might be? I returned to the temples to get the ones that needed magic abilities like underwater in ghost or high jump in festival, I went to Oedo castle after the big hand was gone, I double checked that in space I got the 4 pieces and 1 gold, but so far this missing white cat is giving me a headache.

I think I found it when I went back through game about a decade ago (I think it was behind the hand in Transformed Oedo), but it's unfortunately a very cryptic checklist. Maybe they overreacted. It's hard to compete with the nintendo/rare games on the n64 and it was a renter's system. Goemon's great adventure is a great game, but it was weird to do that right after doing a full 3D adventure, and people just weren't interesting in throwing back to sidescrollers so soon. No one seems to like the PS1 games. I think just doing something like Mystical Ninja on the PS2 would've worked out great.

>> No.6187803

>Maybe they overreacted.
That's probably true, especially since the N64 wasn't popular in Japan and their PS1 games got overshadowed heavily (and suffered from the mixed quality of "PS1 3D" games). On the renting note, this seems pretty true, as I knew a lot of people who played MS64 but I was the only one who owned it. However, can't agree about GGA's gameplay not attracting many, as everyone I knew (back in 2nd grade) absolutely loved it. It, too, got overshadowed in that 1999 window (even outside of Japan), I think.

A little. I read a preview about it in a magazine in Blockbuster before it came out. GGA at least got a magazine ad, apparently.

Despite gains in popularity for both goemon and ‘wacky japan’, truth is I think this series is always going to have a relatively niche audience.

If they look at rare’s sales, or even the sales of something like bomberman, it’s understandable why they’d think the series needs a rebooting to do well. But goemon just isnt something that can reach mainstream western appeal, and even trying only sacrifices the fans that are already there.

Personally I think the series could have a relatively strong future if they make smaller scale budget games. Like a 20-30 dollar goemon platformer/beatemup that’s short and focused on replayability could do well with the core goemon audience. Not super cheap mobile shit or anything but just smaller scale stuff. These days with how social media works it seems like IP awareness is a huge priority and in that regard I think goemon could do very well for relatively cheap.

Maybe to them anything that’s not hugebux isn’t even worth pursuing, but I dont see why a small team couldnt be put together to try something.

Granted, the franchise got exposure from memes of canceled games, Mighty Blunder 9 and Smash Bros., but I'm talking about the game quality here. Goemon can do a game like that if Konami wants.

Download it right now before it gets deleted from here like before.
I will compare its data internally.

The dialogue changes were for consistency with other games according to DDS but in the light of what happened... but that's version 2.0
Version 3.0 for Goemon 2 may very well be forcing, it mentions a "minor edit to boss dialogue" and was in the same day as DDS going off twitter.

Don't ever expect a Goemon 4 translation on RHDN in the light of these events.

DDS never got anything approved ever since the GG3 v 1.0 patch. He submitted news articles and updates for GG2 and GG3.

Patches for RHDN can be temporarily approved with non compliant aspects of the submission expected to be fixed and reuploaded, then removed one day after if you don't do anything.
Also, Tom wished for the patch to be supplied as an option, and DDS wished for a content advisory about the game's contents. Those wishes were overriden by RHDN censorship commissars finishing ResetEra's job not only with GG3 but other games by the same group.

Thanks a lot for the confirmation, anon.
In the worst case possible with RHDN, DDS can release them elsewhere like a personal blog.
That's what Dynamic Designs did when they got unsavory complaints not only about Wildbill, but people who still work with him.

FlashPV is also planning French translations for the Goemon games, so they WILL be released one way or another.
Based baguettes almost always snub RHDN completely with their patches, often for games untranslated to English too.
I would take a baguette translation spam over the flood of spanish google translated trash overshadowing quality work by other spaniards like CUE and gadex and magno (you may have heard from them in collaborations for English patches)

Could just be because he was popular with the developer or fans of the time. "A robot ninja doll is a badass and unique idea, and we could do a lot with that." Kids, especially, loved this series in the 90s, so an action figure-esque character may have just appealed well to them.

Then Goemon 3 has a transvestite nun as a main antagonist.
Dumb gags become more and more predominant as the series went on. I think they just thought “if they’re gonna Kid Ying this, there’s no fucking point”

Then with the first N64 game, they had no choice to recognize it was too good of a game to pass up. It’s up there with Ocarina of Time in terms of sheer scale, it was an AAA for the N64. They probably localized GGA to capitalize on the first one (though I don’t know if it was actually successful in terms of sales in the USA), but they butchered the songs and some comic bits.
By the time the DS game came out, they were probably back at “americans just don’t get it, why bother”

The first paragraph here, while interesting, seems like a wild asspull. There's no evidence that they were inspired or even aware of the American localization changes, and nothing in SFC GG2 indicates that they did. There were plenty of American stereotypes that they could have relied on besides this (eg, the Hulk Hogan comedy manga (which seems like a far more likely inspiration for Shogun McGuinness), etc), and all of them were much more prominent than a foreign localization.

>Goemon 2 is pretty much dedicated to make fun of americans
Colonialist americans who want to change and adapt Japanese culture forcibly to fit their standards, specifically.

Jeremy Blaustein and others from Konami USA were at the Japanese headquarters advising the licensed cartoon games what is kosher, or English text in Japanese versions of others, it's not a stretch they might have tried to get "too involved" in Goemon.
Goemon 3 and 4 have a checklist of things NoA would have a seizure from.
Both Nintendo 64 games too but they localized them since the N64 bombed in Japan.

The series isn't stranger to self referential humor at the expense of marketing partners who betrayed the creatives. Goemon Impact is a jab at a shitty costume supposed to represent Goemon that was used in 1986 to market the first games (which bombed) and was a giant meme. Goemon Shin Sedai is in a jail in the DS game as an "impostor".

It's not too far fetched of Konami Kobe to hate the American branch. The safer Famicom games were passed over because they're too Japanese even when bootlegs like Cowboy Kid prospered, and then the localization of the first SNES game went for a whole year, multiple rejections, scrubbing all of the game of any traces of Japanese text even in tiny background art, and renaming the protagonists to stereotypical chink names. If you're on a shoestring budget (can't even finish all planned levels) and have to deal with such a retarded localization team, scaring them away is one way to solve the problem.

Goemon 4 would never pass RHDN censors, by the way. I hope they release it elsewhere.

Isn’t the whole game, or at least the inciting incident, about impostors? They must’ve had a great time coming up with that one after the dark years of Shin Sedai/Bouken Jidai

Great post anon, thanks.

I’m just gonna say I love Shin Sedai Shuumei as an action platformer and I love its soundtrack. I just don’t like it as a Goemon game.

Bouken Jidai, on the other hand...

btw our good friends at resetera are now stalking the graphical edits guy to "contact" Tom/DDS whom they LOVE SO MUCH through him, and worried DDS might go anon and release more unapproved translations, or that Tom is "faking it" (FlashPV begging for translations to finish untranslated graphics for a FRENCH translation of GG1 wasn't convincing enough...)

Destructive behavior will only embolden their DARVO tactics.

Refuse to engage with actors evidently from that site, block, ostracize, remove power and influence from them in outside communities, recognize when harassment is taking place and take a stand for your fellow community members, and move on.

Bad actors here include: Hardcore Gaming 101, Kotaku, r/games (resetera mods, also helped advence the interests of the AI Somnium Files review bomber from resetera then covered up all developers call for help when it was against resetera's interests), SNES Central, Tiny Cartridge (active actors in the GG3 controversy), cj_iwakura and the Lunar Magical School translators (relative outsiders, defended the harassment, on resetera), TCRF administration (helped signal boost it)

Remember these website names. Block them on twitter. Don't afford them credibility. Focus on getting shit done and supporting your loved romhackers, don't get used against them.

>law enforcement
They actively hide pedophiles at their discord, so they have their fair share of skeletons to sic law enforcement on. The worry is if they infect the rest of the internet like tumblr did.
