Constraint is the fertile soil for creativity.
Hardware constraint pushed composer to create themes ans suites.
Themes is what define video games scores for a very long time and that why older tunes are so catchy and memorable.

Problem is with less and less constraints, the medium got open to un-specialized composers who work on a game like they would work on a commercial or a movie.

Here is what I am into recently (going for an all clear), This is game is outstanding in so many ways.

Even if it's his first work Shinji Hosoe made an amazing compositions like Area 2 (volcanic level) or Area 6 (Ice Age level).
Dragon Spirit Area 2
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bGVYLBtzDzY
Dragon Spirit Area 6
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XlFotEsi-ME

That why when he worked on more complexe hardware (like ZN1 or namco system) or optical media his compositions stayed as catchy and memorable.
Sorry for the bad english by the way.

Music has codes and definition, video game music was mostly pieces and to be prise Themes because technically you could not compose something else.

sticking to theme form is what make it "speak for itself" and why you like it.

this is why my favorite vg music is short loops

A lot of great ones are just 45 to 60 seconds. Japanese composers for NES did that very well.

Compare thart to the long wannabe mozart shit wankery the brits were doing in the same generation becasue space wasn't as restricted writing for commodore

Some games took advantage of the new medium to make music that wouldn't be easily feasible in the past, such as jet set radio's music. And not retro but astral chain for the switch has music with two versions, the 'overworld' and 'battle' versions, and the music fades into the other when the time is right. I'm sure other games done this before, and I'm sure you could've done this in the past also, but still neat.

This don't apply to PCE Super CD

Cotton, Double Dragon 2, Nexzr, Y's 3, this list can be nearly endless.
