I think it is actually pretty clear from the label on the cartridge alone. It says "LICENSED BY NINTENDO" on the left and has the Software Toolworks logo on the right. Obviously, Nintendo develops all of the Mario games, and clearly from the other studio logo and on the game merely being LICENSED by Nintendo (see the cartridge labels for Super Mario World or any game developed by Nintendo which simply have the Nintendo logo on its own) you can tell it's not made by Nintendo and thus naturally is an educational licensed game.

I played this when it was new. You could actually purchase the PC version of this through the Scholastic book club in elementary school.

I remember my librarian and home room teacher giving me such a dirty look when I used the precious book club program to buy a video game. Felt absolutely beautiful.

The game itself is fine. As a kid, it was a novelty to play a game like Carmen Sandiego so Carmen Sandiego with Mario characters is quality entertainment.

As I recall the back basically looked like a game where you played as luigi instead of mario and had absolutely dope backgrounds. Which was how it was really misleading in a way. It still had all the appearance of a traditional platformer while still being educational which theoretically it could have been if it wasn't made by people who I'm pretty sure made PC point and clicks.

I rented this expecting a true Mario game and was confused when there was some ringing telephone shit and walking around some boring city. Call me stupid, because yeah, I was probably 7 years old or something and was lured in by it being a Mario game, just as the developers intended. At least Mario Teaches Typing was clear about it in the title. Had they named it Luigi's Geography Lesson or whatever, then yeah, I probably would've figure it out.

Yeah, I mean sure I was used to educational PC games, but an educational SNES game, not to mention one with Mario branding, wasn't something I was particularly expecting. I guess that was the whole point, to lure kids in with Mario and Luigi, because without them, I'm sure the games would be entirely forgotten. Or hell, maybe they're fun, I've never played more than a few minutes of Mario is Missing.

Also why the fuck does the verification reset faster now? Fuck this shit.

No you look at the boxes and when you decide what game you want you bring the box to the register then they give you a generic plastic case with the cart inside.

>> No.6080491

I played all the way through Mario Is Missing. It wasn't horrible but it wasn't good. It had memorable music, but I don't remember much about the mechanics. I think it was super easy and had awkward controls? I don't recall learning much of anything from it. Even to a child, it was very obviously inferior to a normal Nintendo product. So yeah it would be mostly forgotten if not for the Mario license.

No, this isn't a bad game. But I had a sort of bitter memory of renting this game, based solely on the cart label (it was a Famiclone cart, it just said "Yoshi", no mention of puzzle or anything like on the official box art).
I had played a bit of SMW on a friend's SNES and was anxious to own one. Since I was still stuck with a Famiclone, I fell for a few bootleg tricks. First was buying a copy of "Super Bros. 6", a Tiny Toon Adventure hack. Joke was on them because TTA is actually a great title, even though I was a bit disappointed it wasn't SMW.
Then I saw this game, and thought it might be a Yoshi spinoff game, I guess I was thinking of an 8-bit Yoshi's Island, when YI still didn't exist.
It was disappointing to find out it was a puzzle game. I remember playing it for a bit, but not much.
I played it much later again (Game Boy version) and it's very fun, the egg mechanic is fun. But yeah, not what I was expecting at the time.

This was my first Game Boy game. Like you said, I was expecting a platformer, since it's a spinoff of Super Mario World. I could have gotten Mario Land 2, but no, I wanted Yoshi, because he's a cool character.

I actually like the game to this day, play it fairly often, but was mad that it wasn't what I expected. When Yoshi's Island came out I specifically skipped it, thinking it would be another bait and switch.
