How do I get into the Wizardry series?

Play Wizardry 8.

Start with Wizardry 5 or the Gaiden games.

Don't bother, there's literally nothing to it except grinding.

6 is the only Wizardry game were you have to grind. Otherwise you are simply playing it wrong.

Correct, your personal made up definition of grinding is not grinding, you bloody idiot.

i want to know too
i always get discouraged while rolling for stats since it takes forever, i never know if a roll is good enough, and i also don't fully know how to build a solid and rounded team. plus i heard it's common to get ambushed and instawiped before you can do anything. i loved 8 but it felt way more simple than the old games.

A roll of 18 is good.
> and i also don't fully know how to build a solid and rounded team.
You have 8 classes, 2 of which are impossible to get during character creation. The only aspect that might not be obvious is that bishops are useless since they learn spells far too slow.
This leaves you with Fighters, Samurai, Thief, Priest and Mage.
The first three characters form the front row that takes and deals the brunt of the attacks, the remainder form the back row so a party composed solely of mages isn't going to work and neither is a party composed solely of fighters.
Thieves are a necessity since you need to unlock chests to acquire better equipment but their fighting ability is limited.
If you can't come up with a party combination from that then Wizardry isn't for you.

>plus i heard it's common to get ambushed and instawiped before you can do anything.
It happens but it's hardly common. You can ragequit and pick up before the fight.
Wizardry 5 and derived games offer LITOFEIT as a spell that prevents ambushes.

It's not the classes that cause problems, it's races. Is there an optimal race for each class that you should double up on or does each class have a unique benefit?

>> No.6074937

If you want to get into modern Wizardry, start with 5 and keep going forward until you don't wanna play anymore. If you want to try the entire series, start with 1.

The first three games are connected, and you can transfer your party from the first game all the way through to the third game. This saves you from having to re-roll a team for the second game, but due to the way the third game is designed, you will most likely have to roll a few more characters to supplement your imported team. There's Apple 2 and C64/C128 versions, but I highly recommend playing the SNES or PSX trilogy collections. The original wire-frame dungeons get old FAST.

Wizardry 4 is challenging to map blind, and an RNG-fest the rest of the time. Feel free to skip.

Wizardry 5 is the start of the more modern Wizardry, while not being really tied to the next trilogy. Still wire-frame like the first 4 games, so you might wanna go with the SNES remake on that one.

Wizardry 6, 7, and 8 are all linked together, and you can import your party from 6 to 7, then to 8, as long as you play the Mac or Windows versions. No other platform had those three entirely, just one or two, so you'll need to play on one of those two if you wanna run the same team for the full plotline.

There's some spin-offs on the GB, but I don't know shit about those.

Classic Wizardry has stats capped at 18.
Some Japanese Wizardry have the stats capped at racial start+10.
It should be obvious which race is suited for which purpose. Humans are shit.
Just play the game and draw your own conclusions. You get plenty of chances to swap characters outside of 6-8.

I'm not sure what versions you played but 2 and 3 aren't supposed to let you create characters.
On the other hand you can transfer characters to and from 5 though importing to 5 has the same limitations as importing to 3.

5 has the nice middle ground between the classic trilogy, the Dark Savant trilogy and the Japanese games. It's still set in Llylgamyn but they tweaked the spell list and added ranged weapons as well as the hide ability to make thieves less of a dead weight. Furthermore you encounter NPC and puzzles.
The American SNES version has shitty censorship, avoid it at all cost. Play the SFC version if you have to, it still allows you to play in English. Alternatively you can play the FM Towns, Windows 9x or PS1 depending on your personal preferences.

Wireframe is timeless and makes mapping easier.
The bleak tiles from the original version of 6 are far worse.

Is it realistically possible to play by keeping your first set of rolls on a character even if they suck? It fits the roleplaying aspect way more than rerolling endlessly to get 18s.

how do you start mapping? say you enter a new floor- there's no way of knowing if you're in the center or tucked in one of the corners. You must constantly run off the edge of those 15x15 grids.

>I'm not sure what versions you played but 2 and 3 aren't supposed to let you create characters.
The HELL are you on anon? You can create characters in either of them, since they use the same menus as the first game. And since you need a Good team and an Evil team in the third game, you think gamers won't be able to play if they didn't create both teams in the first game and bring them over? Apple 2, DOS, SNES, PSX, all let you create characters in the 2nd and 3rd games. Where did you hear you couldn't?
>Wireframe is timeless
Ok, you're just full of shit.

In Proving Grounds you will start on the first floor at 0,0 and face north. After that you have DUMAPIC.
Remember that Wizardry 1-4 have 20x20 grids and will regularly wrap around so your starting position isn't even relevant provided you can map properly.
Wizardry 5 is different in that floors have no actual limit and don't wrap around at the edges. Some floors will be 80x40 squares.

>you think gamers won't be able to play if they didn't create both teams in the first game and bring them over?
That's how it was. That's why 2 and 3 are more addons than actual sequels. You can repick the alignment for characters you reincarnate in 3 so your best bet is to keep everyone except the priests neutral. That way you only have to swap priests and keep the rest of the party for the whole dungeon.
