Game Over touches on it but mostly from Nintendo's perspective and it's more a history of the company. It was written by a boomer journalist that thought the "Pearl Harbor didn't work, so we got you with tape decks" line in Die Hard was a serious declaration of war from Japan.

Fun fact: He later had the book reprinted around the time the N64 came out with an epilogue like "No, no, I love video games, I want all that money...I mean all that video games! I love them. Yes sir! That's me, the video game lover."

Not that anon, but I've been thinking about writing a book about the post-Atari era of videogames up until the end of the 4th generation with a heavy focus on the games for consoles, PCs, and in the arcade. Problem is, writing books is rarely worth the time investment these days. Doubly so with something as niche as videogame history.

More like all of the 80's. Blade Runner whole thing was Japan taking over US economy. Die Hard was had that line. Back to the Future 2 had older McFly getting fired by a Japanese business man. I wouldn’t blame any one hardware maker for gaming not being as great as it once was. I’d put that on 7th gen online connectivity. It began the whole dlc and micro transactions thing that all the big publishers now do. I say 7th gen specifically because although the 6th gen systems had online connectivity, it was very spartan and the only game I had that had download dlc was Halo 2. The rest of the games I had were all complete on disc that just happen to have online vs play. The publishers had not yet realized what they could do to shaft players yet. 6th gen online (halo 2 aside) was still “innocent” so to say.

But once the publishers started the day 1 patch to make the game playable, day 1 dlc, micro transactions nonsense. It all started noticeably getting worse and quick. Games didn’t start getting bad with that crap until gen 7. Even then it was mid to late gen 7, early gen 7 was still mostly just gameplay fix patches.

I just finished reading it yesterday. I don't get the criticism, it reads pretty well for a history book and it's packed with details. My biggest criticism was that it didn't talk much about Yu Suzuki, but it's a Sega company history, not an AM2 history so I get it.

The difference there is that 360 and PS3 was mainly the same shit. They also symbolize a drop in the quality of the industry. Genesis and SNES truly felt like two widely different consoles competing for an audience. Each having its own unique games that at its time sold tons of copies. What sold well on 360 PS3? GTA, COD and Fifa? All multiplatform games that were the same shit anyways for each console. This wasn't the case with Snes vs Genesis.

There are plenty of switch games that are incomplete from the box or only have a code in the box. Almost all games now have a day 1 patch. Releasing unfinished games is par for the course regardless of console.

Apparently Wing Commander 1 had some godawful error spit up once you exited the game. They spent weeks trying to figure out what was causing it and how to stop it. Finally, ship day was just around the corner. One dev opened the game up in a hex editor, found the error message, and changed it to read "Thanks for playing Wing Commander!". It shipped like that.

The biggest problem I have with any book or documentary about the "Console Wars" is that they all only ever focus on SNES vs. Genesis or if they do discuss anything after 1995, it's a vague cursory mention at best.

The SNES vs. Genesis console war is probably the most famous, but I'd honestly like to see more written about gaming during the PS1/N64 and the PS2/Gamecube/OG Xbox era. Both of those console generations had a lot of landmark titles and events, but they tend to get overlooked a lot.
