Redone hitscan-based projectiles coming along nicely. The beam is actually a projectile that's forced to exhaust all it's movement in a single gametick, while spawning trails at the same time. Can use this for the grenade launcher, where a toggle can draw up the exact path your grenade will take upon firing. May or may not draw to the screen in 2D instead of spawning model trails.

>> No.6002818

>>6002813
That's really cool!
I wonder what would be faster - draw to screen, or draw to-world.
Also can this work in GZDoom VR?
If so, this could be amazing aiming assistance in VR

God damn imagine if Croteam's doom 4 pitch wasn't thrown out

>> No.6002827

>>6002818
I'm not sure which is faster, I'll have to find out. "Drawing to the world" involves spawning a lot of actors which is expensive and also requires inducing a deliberate desynch so other players can't see it, but drawing to the screen involves more math. Thankfully, keksdose's "libeye" library does screen projection quite efficently.

For VR, I think you'd have to go with the actor approach since the only way to draw to the hud in 3D does not allow offsetting or angling.

For the motion sickness, I think the best you can do is move the monitor away from you a bit more than usual (or play windowed). Normally I'd suggest turning up the fov a little bit, but I don't think that's possible.

Why would you want that? Serious Sam has honestly the worst level design out of any "arena lockdown" FPS, and often has its fights drawn out for way too long.

The levels which you actually move through and explore are nice, but damn do those late game arenas just go on and on. Doesn't help that most of them are single enemy type groups in a locked down square. Like a slaughter map that doesn't end.
At least it isn't Painkiller, square arenas full of melee dudes you massively out speed and they even have wind up on attacks.

More progress on the ZSDF editor. Interface is done, CRUD (create, read, update, delete; for the non-programmers) is pretty much also done. Next up, writing the exporter. Then the importer. Finally, I'll have to optimize the everliving fuck out of this, because some of the stuff I did half-assedly just to get the damn thing to work. I got a few ideas on how to do that. So far, in my tests, 100 conversations (14682 lines) load in approx. 25 seconds. 200 conversations load in 1 minute. In reality they load in 3 seconds, but it takes some time to populate the tree view. That part I'm not sure how to optimize. Yet. Aside from the loading, the rest is pretty fast. Also WinForms is the devil's creation. Fuck that, I'm using WPF next time.

The 1st episode of Dusk was subpar, but the 2nd and especially the 3rd are much better.

Ion Fury is the only one that is truly retro, running on Build while the others use Unity, but suffers from sameness copypasted environments, it's most appealing for those that like secret hunting, which the game has tons of, and some are really obtuse to find.

Amid Evil doesn't really have retro graphics, it looks pretty, but the gameplay IS retro. It has the most variety out of the three.

Not him, but they felt very samy.
I think it's mostly because of overabundance of details that modern machines allowed, which made same kind of detailing be seen very frequently.
Old games used details sparingly, in very limited, measured amounts, only emphasizing key elements of the scene.
And those repetitive detail elements caused different environments to feel repetitive as well.

I don't think I played them in the same order you did, and I only played four episodes before getting bored and dropping the game, but Astral Equinox, Solar Solstice, and Arcane Expanse were all built on very similar enemies. Arcane Expanse added some Skaarj-style side-rolling but that was it. More important are the enemy dynamics, or lack thereof in this case. Every M1 introduces you to the charges-at-you guys, the weak projectile guys, and then a flying projectile guy. Later, they introduce the bigger projectile guy. By the end of each episode you see roughly six enemies in total, and then when you start the new episode, it's like the reset button being hit. Domain of the Sentinels was the only episode that felt like a proper variation, though its progression still wasn't exactly great.

Where was a specific order stated? I know the first one was first but after that it seemed like you could just pick as they opened.

I guess the snakes stood out a bit in Arcane Expanse since their acid puddled on the ground, but the big grosshopper things weren't really any different from the usual melee-charging enemies. It just felt like there weren't any game-changing enemies. A room with one Archville is completely different from a room without one. With Ion Fury, the red robe crossbow guys had the damage and spread to usually change my approach as well. With Amid Evil, it just felt like I was hopping between small/medium-sized rooms the same way, feeding my special ability bar with kills, and then using the special abilities every time I entered the obligatory big room with the bigger enemies. It's like I always had the drop on the enemy, which isn't how it should be in a classic fps.

>> No.6005131

>>6005110
Are you talking visual design or gameplay design? Because anon was talking about "basic humanoids that shoot glowy projectiles at you". Well, an Imp isn't that creative as well. A brown dude throwing a fireball.
Meanwhile Amid Evil has very good enemy design. Golems, Angels, green things that run at you insanely fast and I can't even explain what's luring in "The Forge". Gameplay and design wise Amid Evil is a great game.

>> No.6005153

>>6005131
Gameplay design. The imp is basic, yes, but eventually you get to the point when you have imps, pain elementals, manucubii, and revenants all in the same room. I never felt like the number or variety of enemies in a room really mattered in Amid Evil.

But if I ever fire it back up, I'll give The Forge a shot.

>> No.6005159

My point wasn't that Doom's enemies are bad or that Amid Evil's enemies are straight better, just that you should't judge the game to quick. You might miss out on something you would enjoy.

There seems to be two approaches to doom, the RIP AND TEAR approach and the maze approach. This is the first one. I'm not a huge fan of it, and the meme view people have of doom now. That stupid comic (that people only read like 2 pages of and not realize he's high on berserker which wears off) distored a lot of people's views on the game.

I like Doom 1 way more since it has more slower paced maze stuff and doom 2 onwards had more fast based action with suepr shot gun.

Personally I like D4T approach. It gives enough Nu-Doom without being too bloated with it.
Other mods based on that game tend to have too much or not enough.

I tried D4T:Crucible Slayer edition. While it was best way to play D4T,I wasn't a fan of how Berserk plays.
Simply exploding into a pile of guts is much better.

It doesn't break maps nearly as much BD does.

Possibly a better budget as well and a proper modding scene for the new games.

On the other hand we wouldn't get much because Valve doesn't make games anymore.

Unless Carmack and Romero give them the motivation to make more.

Episode 1 is God Awful. Some of the level layoutings are neat, but it is a Ridiculous Pain In the Ass to play. A monstrous one.

Episodes 2 and 3 are where it's at. They are charming in their ways, memorable, well flowing. Sadly, they only ever hit THAT mark if you play on the last difficulty (good luck getting through ep1 on it) and without leveling either yourself or your sword (again, good luck getting through ep1 without leveling yourself). Otherwise they can be somewhat of a faceroll. That having been said, they are shorter than ep1, and, taken together, comprise more like 1/3 of the game, instead of 1/2.

The last, 4th, episode is somewhere in between of 1 and 2/3 balance-wise, but, how do I say, overall it's more or less early beta quality. In contrast with ep1 which was so overdone it was burnt to unedible crisp, ep4 very much is just "you know, whatever". That having been said it STILL plays better than episode1, but it's not, you know, all that genuinely enjoyable either. Has some bitching soundtracks, Modern Mystery, Caution, good stuff.

Anyway, I suffered through this thing continuously, on Shogun (savegems off though) and I absolutely don't recommend it. What I DO recommend is taking a look at cheat codes and either somehow warping yourself straight to the start of ep2 (Greece) or just godmoding through ep1 as quickly and not giving a fuck as possible. Also, again, for ep2/3 my recommendation is Shogun difficulty, not leveling, not using the sword, they are on the easy side regardless.

Like LMB to LeftAlt, RMB to CapsLock (Shift+Capslock will still activate/disactivate CapsLock-proper - well, depends on the actual remapping script; it does for me).

Also, almost all the major 2.5D FPS games can be successfully played keyboard-only (right hand is best situated on NumPad for that, in my opinion), with pretty much only Eradicator being a more or less notable exception.

Not really. If visuals have Z axis, and gameplay has Z axis, then it's a 3D game.
That's it. If you try to "acktually" it with particularies then you are inventing your own definition.
Thus limits like no RoR (due to map format limitations) or no proper freelook have no bearing on it, and both Doom and Duke 3D are actual 3D games, full stop. They have their limits, sure, but it's still 3D since both gameplay and visuals represent 3D space and if you try going beyond that then it can befurther argued and misconstrued that ANY game at all that is projected onto a flat screen is not 3D.

Metal Gear Solid can be played off radar other than in its unrelated to the core loop "bazooka/sniper aiming minigame", thus it is 2.5D game after all, by your definition, isn't it? That's for one.
Second, the definition you use, was, at the end of the day, invented by someone, regardless of whoever it was. Why should I submit to other people's descriptions of the same reality I witness?

There are a bunch of games which share similar sets of traits, among which are: first person perspective with continuous movement and turning, sprite-based billboarded enemies, abundance of strictly vertical walls, characteristical perspective distortions on lookups/lookdowns where allowed, excessive vertical auto-aiming combined with much less pronounced horizontal one. Sometimes, the walls adhere to a grid or are placed in a set number of directions.

As long as you are aware with these and those games playing fairly similarly, you don't really even need any definitions. If you are, however, like, what is Marathon or what is Cybermage - then sure, knock yourself out.

"2.5D" in practice means that the walls are not drawn using polygons like we expect in a "normal" 3D game but instead are drawn using a simpler and cheaper column drawing function. if the FPS allows for height variations but doesn't have perspective-correct freelook, it's 2.5D.

Also, let's review another extreme, Wizardry-likes. So, you move in discrete steps, the turns are strictly 90 degrees. You have a picture of what locales look like 2-3 steps before you. Not even monsters, those usually pop up in jack-from-the-box like manner, initiating "tactical combat" minigame.

Now, what I am leading to, is that dungeon FLOORS are absolutely flat. You only ever move north or south or west or east in them. You fight with monsters in a separate minigame, you loot chests and pick doors in a separate minigame, yadda-yadda. HOWEVER, dungeons have multiple floors, connected with ladders up and ladders down and, sometimes, HOLES. Which you can levitate over OR drop down taking some damage - and ending in one of the lower floors. Noe what I AM leading to is that said lower floor do absolutely have room unreachable by any other means than DROPPING DOWN A CORRECT HOLE which has to FIRST BE DEDUCED by means of OVERLAYING and ACTUALLY COMPARING THE FLOOR MAPS you are TYPICALLY REQUIRED TO DRAW YOURSELF. No, I wonder, does the OVERLAYING part count as the presense of the third dimension in those games' gameplay as per your definition?!

>hell is in a similar state because of his presence, and demons are more and more warped and eldritch abd mechanical as hell tries to adapt to him
>revenants are missing their arms and kick or use bows with their feet and mouths, lead their shots if you strafe in a straight line
>imp spikes are wildly overgrown and too heavy to lift, they fire more slowly but their melee wrecks you
>pain elementals are bloated and can't fly anymore, they boomrush you and throw explosive skulls at short range instead
>zombies are liquified puddles sometimes, or tiny revenants with shitty old guns
>archviles are having the time if their lives, and will sometimes revive monsters as a better one instead but with only 1HP

I fucking love Doom but I just don't understand the appeal of this game.

It's slower (yes I know you can HUH around but the game is still slower, the creators even acknowledge this), the levels are poorly designed and short, the enemies are quite boring and uninspired, shooting feels weightless and floaty and the entire game is just a bland shit brown that's unappealing to the eye.

Jesus. Finally. I'm done. Last update on the ZSDF editor for now. Had to make the importer read XML files instead of the DIALOGUE lumps directly, at least for the time being so there's some form of progress saving available. The XML is generated when exporting a dialogue, along with the dialogue file itself.

I'll release it next week, because I gotta go away for a few days, plus I want to do some real scenario work to test it more thoroughly and polish it some more before release. I'm sure I've missed something. Also need to write the documentation. Planning on putting the source for the entire toolkit up on GitLab as well.

As a bonus, I've managed to optimize the tree view. Went from loading 200 conversations in 1 minute to 500 conversations in 5 seconds. Of course you have to be pretty fucking mental to load 500 convos, but hey, at least you can.

>> No.6007938

You can do it in ACS/Decorate, but it's way more annoying since you can't use proper pointers or arrays.

The trick to making a beam is using a 3D model actor that's 1 (1.2 due to pixel stretch) units in height. You then scale it's height to the length you want and the width become radius. After that you tilt it 90 degrees, and presto you've got a beam. To make a curved beam, you have to stitch together many small straight ones.

People just pool the two of them together for that same reason (PK too as it is pretty much gothic SS with some extra elements thrown into the mix for good measure), discounting things like the fact that 2016 has a sense of nonlinear map structure and progression, enemies above stone-throwing tier AI, and more visually distinctive areas. Thief Default Bindings
Unreal Bindings
Quake Bindings
WASD Bindings
Thief Classic Bindings

I'm using the GOG version, incase that matters.

>doomguy turns it over in his hand and looks at it, tries shouldering it a few time and finds the shoulder dongles keep snagging on his armour and make it a bitch to shoulder quickly
>While Hayden is telling doomguy how to use the shoulder dongles to not turn his collar bone to dust when he fires it, he tears off the guards and practices shouldering quickly, and moves along satisfied with his modification, much to Hayden's frustration

Doom 2016 did a fantastic job of giving personality to a character who never speaks and never has his face shown.

>But I'm sure Eternal will shit on that idea and go for something more boring.
doom technically works more if the story makes less sense/has retcons here and there so 1: it's a sign of it not mattering and 2: could lead to interpretation and a bunch of theories
some people will say a lot of things would benefit from still being mysterious but doom seems like a more noticeable case
we could have gone a partially twisted metal like case of each game trying out different gameplay design and art design ideas, whether or not it'd tie with a specific game in mind or two
the rpg games were almost a merge of classic and doom 3 with some new personalitiy into it
there's probably still a lot you can do with doom as a franchise before you let it rest in peace outside a few occasional cameos in other stuff or re-releases and leave it to fans to keep it "eternal" like they did before 2016 was released

In Doom'16 we learn that Hell assimilates other worlds into it until they become part of Hell dimension. In Doom 1 they teleport Deimos into Hell.

So it stands to reason that
1) Hell is connected to many different dimensions and
2) Hell expands by conquering other dimensions and adding them to Hell in some way
thus:
Hell is an amalgamation of different dimensions that demons conquered over the countless aeons, and therefore can come in a wide variety of different flavours depending on the world that particular region of hell was part of before.

Since a multitude of worlds does exist in Doom universe, It is also possible that there are many different Earths and different "humanities", some of which were counquered by Demons, some weren't, and Doomguy comes from a different Earth than the one in Doom'16.

>> No.6010095

i also like to imagine hell can always resurrect certain demons or even clone them
explains why the cyberdemon can be an enemy type even though he was also a demon lord
and why zombiemen and former humans usually look similar because otherwise human enemies would realistically look more diverse, meaning the edgiest doom could ever be is earth having baby zombies or zombies of different races
for what we know, even animals could be zombies, specially bunnies
or even trees and plants

One thing to remember while playing to get a tiny bit more out of the combat is that you can often cancel reload animations by switching to another weapon. Weapon combos help you kill so much faster. Almost too fast if I'm being honest, but it feels really good.

>>6010175
It doesn't have the same replay value as the first 2 games but once you embrace it as a "just go fast" type game and gain control of the encounters and cheesing the shit out of everything with your weapons, it's pretty fun.

Nightmare skill ensures the monsters deal respectable damage so you're never *too* broken even if you reload cancel all the time. Don't expect the same deal from 1 and 2 on the map design front though, even if the first 4 maps give off the sense of nonlinearity of old the rest of the game doesn't live up to them.

Weapons and the sci fi looks are okay. But then again everything looks "okay" today to the point its boring. Titanfall 2 looks amazing but artists never seem to go crazy. Lack of distinctiveness today.
Maybe my expectations were high especially since 3 was also just okay. Eternal also seems to be going for the same greasy looking demons blobs. Those Demons nests look like something out of darksiders.

>> No.6010236

>>6010216
it's not really that cheap, actually the reason I stuck with it was that I don't think I ever really felt like I should've dodged something that hit me. There was a sense of consistency to encounters.

You just want to always be moving, basically. Focus on controlling imps using shit like the remote detonation rocket launcher and the shotgun's grenade, whip out the gauss cannon for big dudes or throw out a quick shotgun grenade/rocket reload cancel. If enemies get into your personal bubble throw out a stun from the plasma rifle to make room. Using glory kills during hectic fights is a GREAT way to take avoidable hits, so don't do it unless the reward outweighs the risk, like if you're very low on health or maybe if a tiny bit more armor would give you rich get richer, which is downright unfair.

>> No.6010237

Nothing about the game really gives off the vibe it was tailored after consoles, it's pretty standard in its approach. Painkiller doesn't play like 2016 at all outside of the fact they're both arena styled shooter romps.

Want to get depressed? Titanfall 2's style is great because the high flying stylish action contrasts super well with the grounded military sci-fi designs. It's a great feel.

>it has mandatory weapon upgrades and as a result the only weapons that have specific roles are the BFG and the chainsaw
I don't see how that makes the other weapons fail at having roles, the upgrades are to improve them at their roles, and you pick and choose which upgrades to prioritize.
There's little sense in spending points on the pistol perhaps, but that's just kind of in line with how the pistol has always been the worst weapon in every Doom game.

>enjoy looking for the last imp hanging somewhere on the cieling so the next wave can spawn
Though I think the heavy reliance of lock-in arenas is a mark against he game, that's not something I've ever had happen to me.

ok instead of giving you punchy weapons with different rythms to them and tacticool situational uses they give you a bunch of piss weak guns, too many in my opinion, honestly what's quake's railgun doing in there and why does it take most of the game to get a chaingun, and expect you to figure out roles for them yourself, cause they sure as hell didn't have a clue
so just use whatever you have ammo for, doesn't matter, even the boomstick is underwhelming

The chaingun isn't even worth using over any other automatic weapon. Doesn't seem like they're rectifying the weapon problems in Eternal, either.

i dunno about that man
>pistol
actually worthless, a lot like old doom
>shotgun
your main skirmishing weapon for the early game, the grenade launcher is the third best single shot weapon in the game and the primary fire is good for combos as a pseudo-melee attack to finish off enemies up close after peppering them with fire on the approach. primary fire loses relevance as you go.
>HAR
workhorse. for early mid game it's your designated long range fodder clearing gun, micro missiles give it some good fire-and-forget burst damage to throw out as you're switching between weapons.
>plasma rifle
early game high dps high ammo drain, alt fires are both different variations on making space around you with stun being a panic button that does no damage but will stop anything in its tracks and heat blast having extremely high AOE damage that will pulp most smaller mobs immediately
>rocket launcher
much like continuous doom, it does almost everything. great for clearing individual weaker mobs with one clean shot, gets better at this with remote detonation, or you can make it a bit better at burst damage with the burst lock-on.
>super shotgun
outrageously high close range damage especially with the double shot, what more is there to say?
>chaingun
great consistent medium range damage. More of a power weapon than it was in old doom. Mobile sentry turns it into a lawnmower, giving it ridiculously high damage at the cost of making you a slower target- great to whip out when you have a good position with the drawback of high ammo drain.
>gauss cannon
big boy power weapon, as the BFG now has its own ammo it kind of takes the place of the doom 1 BFG in that it's a ridiculously potent weapon that makes you feel weird about using the plasma gun anymore. Good at anything. Deleting distant targets, heaping on heavy damage in a combo, deleting a squishy target anywhere on screen reliably, and siege mode actually admittedly completely breaks the game I make no excuses

Spot on. The rocket launcher is good as is, but becomes excellent with either upgrade. I'll argue that you really want the upgrades as the difficulty progresses in the game.

>HAR
idk why but that reminds me how for some god forsaken reason, the crosshairs are bound to the fov so the higher it is, the smaller they get. This makes the HAR almost impossible to use without the missiles or scope cus the crosshair on higher fovs is practically nonexistent. Why the hell didn't make it two bold while recital like almost every other weapon, or at least do SOMETHING to have it stand out more?

Or maybe N O T bind the crosshairs to the damn fov?

Quick tips on Timblers:
1) They take half damage from explosives.
2) Thus they're best suitable for nails and lightning if you can, due to their DPS.
3) The Super Shotgun is surprisingly viable if you get close enough to have them try to engage you in melee, and you bait and dodge so they whiff their swing, pounding shell after shell, made easier by a good corner or pillar, in case they start zapping again.

Also, Quad Damage is always useful, obviously.

It does not matter if it's drawn with polygons or not.
3D means "three dimensions". Game allows you to move in 3 dimensions, game shows you 3 dimensions, it's 3D.
Otherwise you'd have to call Wing Commander and other early sprite based space sims "2.5D", since they showed 3D with scaling and panning of a 2D plane, even if they allowed you all 6 DOF of movement.
"not drawn with polygons" argument is completely bogus. You can for example have voxel engine that calculates 3D space but transforms voxel entities into sprites before drawing, and it would NOT be 3D by your definition.

In any case, my point is that adding various clauses, "ackchuallys" and exceptions on top of "3D means three dimensions" is idiocy and unnecessary complication of what should be a simple issue of:
1) How many dimensions the game shows
2) In how many dimensions the game allows to operate entities (player and enemies for example).
If both are "3" then its 3D. If both are 2 then its 2D. If one 2 while other is 3, then 2.5D.

>>6007249
Wizardry-likes are 2.5D because third dimension, while shown (albeit primitively) is not present in actual gameplay, you cant jump or visually elevate yourself above the surface. The floor transit simply transport you into another flat area with a very clear transition - there would be no functional difference if it was just teleportation. Same reason Wolfenstein is 2.5D, really.
