Saturn

There's so many intricate details about how that system works and so many different limitations that it can make development a nightmare if you're not checking on real hardware regularly.

Even something as basic as what color modes are being used between VDP1 and VDP2 can cause a nightmare. Most emulators for the Saturn out there just flat out ignore those limitations or emulate the behavior incorrectly which creates plenty of headaches for people creating homebrew as well as translation patches.

The same is true for the Sega CD and 32X. Yes games will work on these and look fine to the average player, there's lots of fine details that are not accurate and it again causes problems for people creating homebrew, rom hacks, and translation patches.

Saturn Grandia, between the three popular Saturn emulators we have the following issues:

Yabause and it's children - Shits itself on every FMV, shit itself even harder during battles with horrible graphics corruption issues.

Mednafen - Seems to play fine until you get to the end of Disc 1 and the game completely locks up keeping you from saving your game and proceeding to Disc 2.

SSF - Probably the most playable, but it has horrible sound emulation causing sound effects and instruments to not sound right.

Resident Evil (Saturn) also has it's fair share of issues in emulators, with one of the worst being that the game completely crashes near the end when you try to save Chris or Jill from their cell.

Did all those things, still didn't fix the sound issues. Do you honestly think we're all too retarded to read the same guides and wiki posts you're reading?

Maybe if you've never played the game on real hardware you wouldn't notice it, but I definitely can notice the sound inaccuracies. A lot of sound effects, especially ones in the menus, sound like beeps in SSF regardless of what settings you use.

Seeing as it hasn't been fixed in years I highly doubt it's going to get fixed any time soon. And it's not just menu sound effects, it's quite a few sound effects throughout the game and it's annoying. But if you're fine with earrape sound effects knock yourself out I guess.

I haven't played it the whole way through on that emulator to know what else might go wrong. But seeing has how it can't do something as trivial as playing a simple PCM sample correctly, I highly doubt it's going to handle the rest of the game well. Grandia also has a known issue (on both Saturn and PS1) where even on real hardware it can lockup due to a sound playback issue. It's very rare on real hardware, but it can happen. If this emulator is struggling to playback sound correctly, I would imagine that issue is going to be amplified.

That's what gets me about the people whining about people with physical games. I'd be willing to bet that a lot of game collectors have 1) emulated videogames at some point and 2) probably did so before the average JUST EMULATE BRO kid was old enough to use a computer on his own. I have lots of arcade PCBs, but I sure as hell enjoyed playing stuff on MAME back in the early-to-mid 2000s.

I always see these "N64 and Saturn emulation sucks" posts but now that I'm calling out the angry collectorfags to prove it, suddenly they're too scared to post, silently seething that now anyone can enjoy what used to be expensive and require original hardware because emulation was bad. Even 2 years ago there were N64 games you couldn't emulate. It's amazing how badly the collectors have been BTFO in the last few years.
