Some asshole back in 2002 or so said it was the black sheep of Zelda and now everyone's been parroting the same drivel since. I played it as a kid and loved that it was so different. Control-wise, it's so satisfying and fluid. Your momentum will carry if you jump or attack and is crucial to getting past an obstacle or an enemy. I don't know who it was but I wasn't paying any mind to the internet at the time of me playing Zelda II.

Btw I recommend to you Battle of Olympus which is one of my childhood game, it was hard but the musics were so good, the aesthetics was original. I consider it as a hidden gem that most people may not appreciate to what it is despite the quality put inside for it’s time.

You're both right, and wrong. Basically, as soon as LttP came around, the opinion changed. Zelda 2 went from "that action filled sequel to Zelda 1" to "that weird outlier" since LttP was Zelda 1: But Bigger™(and easier). Link's Awakening would be more of the same, so the narrative started to form that Zelda 2 was everything: a misstep, the black sheep, the one that didn't count, etc.

It isn't helped that even by standards of its time (not even "Zelda standards"), Zelda 2 is designed for an experienced gamer. Enemies don't drop health refills: they (on a count), MAY drop magic refills. A person who doesn't like that choice will view Life as the only worthwhile spell, and never use magic except to heal. Which is ironic, since Zelda 2's US rebalancing with its EXP point levels are designed to help a player's survivbility by default.

>second level is Magic, meaning spells have lower cost and you can do them more often
>third level is Attack, to make killing enemies more efficient, and the process starts again

I got through most of the game without a guide, but I eventually used one towards the end. I hadn't played in a long time, and I thought I already completed the invisible palace (you need the flute to make it appear), but I guess I didn't save or maybe died on the boss. So after I got to the Great Palace and saw it was still locked, I didn't know where to go. Used a guide to find the hidden palace again, then read about how to beat the Great Palace too. Otherwise I found stuff on my own. Was great, just spent countless hours as a kid wandering around the map until I finally figured out where to go.

Because it's the most fundamentally different title out of the entire series, and despite what you've been told for years, humans are creatures of habit and tend to dislike stuff that ends up being too different. Hell, the American Super Mario Bros. 2 (the one that was recycled from Doki Doki Panic!) is a lot more similar to the original Super Mario Bros. than Zelda 2 is to the original Zelda, and it's still hated. There are other reasons at play in that case, sure, but it further goes to show that people don't tend to welcome changes that are too radical, and the fact that Super Mario Bros. 3 and ALttP were both closer to the original SMB and Zelda respectively clearly shows.
Another popular example, which is however not retro, is with the first three Devil May Cry games.
With all that said, I still didn't like Zelda 2 even after giving it a honest, open minded try. I'm OK with change, but it has to be for the better, and Zelda 2 was not.
