There is a little known game made in 86' by the now defunct 'Nintendo', called Super Mario Bros. I worked on it in 86', as an intern. Did you know the cloud sprite, and the bush sprite, are the same sprite but a different colour?

A shame the game never got to see the light of day, it was really fun to see how much they could cram in that old hardware.

I see you know your stuff, but did you also know that Square (that's the guys who made FF7) also made a mecha RPG called Xenogears? I didn't until this morning!

You heard wrong, the Mecha RPG they made was called Front Mission 3, my cousin who had all the obscure games had it and Square wouldn't make two Mecha RPGs on the same platform.

I feel like that console would have lots of obscure hidden gems, like the DS.

I wish. Vagrant Story is terrible. One of the worst "hidden gems" around but hipsters who hardly played the game love to parade it around. It's an incoherent mish mash of ideas where nothing works, a good case study in how not to design a game

I think you make the good point about a lack of cohesion, and that the game stumbles into “how not to” territory (I.e. repetitious animations of speed and power buffs/debuffs on you and enemy taking maybe 3 minutes per engagement on some enemies) but as you said, with some glaringly obvious flaws, the game became as leaping point onto to true third person Action RPGs, with companies removing the “hard numbers” that dictate VS for more casualised aRPG titles that gamers such as you can enjoy more accessibly.

>> No.5960220

>>5960195
Not just that, everything about the game is fucked to the point where I don't even think they had any idea of how it's meant to be played. There's multiple playstyles you can do but they're all retarded, you can either take the RPG aspects of the game seriously and craft weapons paying attention to enemy weaknesses and swap them out mid combat while managing risk but this whole playstyle is one of the most disgustingly tedious things you could ever do in any RPG not just because of how long encounters take and the animations but because you're forced to deal with the slow as fuck menus to swap out gear constantly on top of refreshing your risk. You can also go to the other extreme and simply play it as a rhythm game where you time ridiculously long chains while missing most hits and doing relatively small damage that adds up over time, this takes even longer per encounter and homogenizes every single fight into the same basic rhythm game like loop. And dipshits like you will defend this absolute unfocused clusterfuck because it has muh numberz and is "hardcore" despite not actually being difficult at all, just obscure. Go fuck yourself anon

>> No.5960259

It's not redundant at all, decent developers designed their games with the load times in mind and had you equip all your shit before entering combat, or didn't have 3D models for everything so switching gear was quick.

>I think you make the good point about a lack of cohesion

What actually struck me about Vagrant Story was just how cohesive the whole design was. Everything that Denam can do is presented without any real abstraction outside of combat. All the mechanics the game introduces make sense both within the setting and for denam's character.

There were a lot of poor design choices and limitations, but a lack of cohesion isnt one of them imo

Blatantly untruth. Square only made one game and unfortunately it (Final Fantasy 7) didn't sell well enough to warrant a sequel and the studio went under.

Is it not more to do with the menus? Just poor user interface design. Like the opposite of the 3-click rule. Hotkeys would be possible, even if they couldn't just be 'tacked on' when making a PS1 game (they should have designed them in).
