Nice. I'm a little further from a 1cc, still need to figure out the final stage and how to beat Jupiter cleaner. Mostly the last segment and getting consistent at taking out the turrets at the start without bombing too much.

Out of curiousity, I tried Batsugun Special last night. People weren't kidding about the first loop being easy. Cleared it on my first attempt in the middle of the night. But doing four loops seems rough. Loop 2 was already a big step up with all the suicide bullets.

And there any silly shmups worth playing besides Parodius and Cho Aniki? I'm not a huge shmup guy so an element of spectacle where I'm waiting to see what the game will throw at me next often makes the game a lot more enjoyable. I liked Boogie Wings/The Great Ragtime Show as a result since it's sort of like a horizontal shmup Metal Slug with some fun mechanics like the hook and changing vehicles.

Just 1cced Batsugun [original]. What a ride!
Really fun game.
Music is kind of cheesy but also catchy and upbeat.
Stage 4 & 5 do require a bit of memo work, otherwise you'll just die to super-fast bullets from awkward angles and sniper tanks coming from hidden corners. You have to pre-empt all that shit, you can't react or simply flail around.

Art is fantastic, whoever designed the mechs and backgrounds put a lot of detail into them.

Highly recommended.

Thunder Dragon 2 (サンダードラゴン2?) is a vertical arcade shooter, developed by Banpresto and published by NMK in 1993. The game uses variable rate scrolling (the screen scrolls at different speeds or not at all), and is played from a top-down view. Unlike space shooters, Thunder Dragon 2 is played in-atmosphere on a single world with contemporary airplanes.

The game contains eight stages, with popcorn enemies and ships with varying degrees of durability throughout. Each stage culminates in a boss fight, preceded by a warning. The player chooses between two different ships, a slow but powerful ship on the player 1 side, and a fast but weak ship on the player 2 side. Scoring is accomplished through enemy destruction, accumulation of medals dropped by enemies, and special bonus awards for completing specific tasks.

In Batsugun or Gun Hohki?

Can't help on Gun Hohki since I haven't played that. But second boss in Batsugun is Madzella, the first phase is simple enough, just take out the pulsing spread-shots on the wings then the main body. Phase two requires you to misdirect the boss as he unloads bullets, there are gaps in his bomb streams sometimes, then bomb once or twice just to buy some time and get some hits in. You almost always have to bomb on that boss to be consistent.

PS2 or DC versions are the way to go.
Xbox version sucks according to many players. supposedly the DC version is "most authentic," since it's the most "direct" arcade port and lacks a roll button, but the PS2 version has more features and such. XBox version has some "remixed" stuff in it, but is generally considered the lesser port of the bunch.

They aren't uniquely amazing but they are well made fast paced classic style shmups, and 2 is brutally difficult. I've been playing Deathsmiles by CAVE, which I had never played before finding it in this retro arcade in Osaka.

The theme is fun and Halloween appropriate, and the difficulty is less than insane, which is nice (I can get sort of far on one credit). The scoring system makes no sense in these games; it's hard to figure out what to do to get tons of points.

Also, there are two unlockable characters plus one unlockable stage, and once anyone inputs the secret codes for those, they're saved to the PCB permanently? I find that to be bonkers and also amazing.

You're not doing any of that, are you?

Survival implies dadhopping when you just collect kuso scrubby-bomb clears in easy and average shmups, in the worst possible ways. There's no longevity to a game if you just go for the 1cc flail achievement. You get it in a few weeks, then what? You move on to the next shit clear? Hence dadhopper.

Yes, and? Ultimately it doesn't matter as long as you enjoy it. The only real reward for getting good at a shmup is enjoying yourself. If you really love a game and want to keep at it, you'll probably get into scoring naturally (assuming it's worthwhile at all in that game). Playing to impress other people is silly though, particularly when maybe 10 people in the world would care about your high score for most games.

If you're saying they might be cheating themselves by not sticking with a game long enough, that's a fair argument. But if you're saying there's anything shameful about just getting kusoclears, I don't buy it.

It's not only about enjoyment, it's also about tinkering with a game and figuring it out. the sense of mastery. Like how an engineer is driven by curiosity even if it's not enjoyable at times and actually frustrating.
Women will never understand this though so I'll talk about enjoyment with u.

Not all enjoyment is equal. There's the enjoyment of spectators, enjoyment of scrubs, enjoyment of the more dedicated and so on. There's also the enjoyment of improvement/creativity/dedication.

If you want to say all enjoyment is equal comrade then say it, and become a spectator, save yourself the frustration of screwing up run after run and just enjoy the spectacle of watching good players perform.

Why should he? As long as you know playing for score is superior to being a filthy dadhopping survival shitplayer, you're good.

That guy is new and just cleared the game a week ago and is already jumping into scoring? That's a good sign.

And yet as soon as the scoring started becoming even the slightest bit demanding he went silent, all I see is him getting over excited hyping himself up before even committing to the grind

So just parrot the sentiments of others without building up the skills themselves and you're good? What a joke.

Of course there's different forms of enjoyment. But getting some quick and dirty 1ccs is different than just watching somebody play too. But as I said, if all you're saying is that you think they're cheating themselves out of a deeper enjoyment, that's a fair take.

Stale material, doesn't stick to me because it's not true. But what I say about you is true.

>pretend to be leet scorer
I have correct opinions, but I don't pretend to be a skilled score master. When I get big results I'll post them. Until then I'm just grinding away and having fun.

Popularity doesn't matter much in this genre since the japs have pushed arcade shmups beyond what western players have achieved, in general.
So whether you are scoring gunbird, deathsmiles or some more popular cave game doesn't really matter. The bar is already set very high.

>> No.5968674

>>5968669
It does when it's popularity among high level players, not general popularity. The same types of japs that destroyed Gunbird and Deathsmiles grinded DOJ even harder. But you are right, there are players like Kamui after all.

Thunder Force 3, trying to get that Mania 1CC. I do well most of time, but I start losing my flow on Gorgon. Otherwise, if you start on Haides, it's shouldn't be too hard.

Well, that was a videogame. Pretty difficult final boss by Technosoft standards. I'd rank the game below TF4 but above TF3. What do ya'll think about the PS2 game? Thinking about playing that one next.
