I'm kind of of the mindset that the "western kids would buy Japanese art" excuse isn't really true. I bet it probably had to do with tarrifs or trade restrictions or tax loopholes of some sort that said X amount of work on a product had to be done in said country to receive said benefit/ avoid said penalty. Maybe western studios felt like they HAD to use whatever was already on hand to not get their budget cut the next quarter.

Because people who think the western art is superior or more salable don't have eyes or something and shouldn't be working in media.

But again there were a lot WWII and Korea Vets walking around back then who probably didn't like the idea of buying "nip" or "gook" artwork for their kids.

Something about this nails that post 1985 Sega vibe - stuff like Quartet and Alien Syndrome, and especially early Phantasy Star. It's the brightly coloured spandex and 'heroic supermodel' look. It's a mile away from the game's Dirty Pair designs and comedic tone but hits my nostalgia in the right place.

Europe gets the game's feel down well here, and the art still looks quite 80s anime. Japan's is astounding art (isn't it Shirow or someone?) and would suit a CAVE style super detailed reboot, just unsure about NES TGL which is far more 80s scifi/mecha inspired. Read somewhere the US one is a ripoff of a Star Trek movie poster.

Didn't Megaman in Europe get a Japanese artist to do a 'realistic' cover (which may have been done with TGL here)? It's so much better than BBAMegaman while still being sorta amusing,
