Yes the first release was on N64 but it's like a beta version. A lot of changes and fixes went into the PC release not to mention the way better resolution. Then the Dreamcast version came out, I'd recommend that probably as the best of both worlds, you get to use a controller and it looks good. The PS1 and N64 versions are just shit though unfortunately. They were probably ok at the time but didn't age well, there's no reason to play them today.

Take a look at the Dreamcast or PC versions and see what you've been missing, it's a night and day difference. Literally no reason anyone has to play the N64 version ever again but of course the Nintendo babies will probably try and force their favorite toy onto other people anyways.

>atmosphere
Mario 64's atmosphere, created by the combination of Kondo's excellent soundtrack that tonally shifts in perfect unison with levels like Bob-omb Battlefield to Jolly Roger Bay to Cavernous lava levels to snowy mountains that are saturated with character, isn't matched by Rayman 2's forgettable soundtrack and overwhelmingly green, aristicaly questionable, Euro aesthetic.

It is more atmospheric than a lot of its 3D platforming contemporaries though, and it takes a massive dump on corny pointless garbage like the Crash series.

>> No.5841221

>>5841213
it's really just a different style though. rayman went for surreal jungle where every level feeds into the next in a way that makes sense. I'm always blown away by it

>> No.5841226

Rayman 2 is definitely on the list of games where I have an Emperor's New Clothes thing going on with it.

Number one, I was a big Rayman 1 fan, and 2 was a huge step down in terms of aesthetics and music. Plus they rewrote/retconned every supporting character/villain while adding others like Globox where the game acted like they've been there all along and you should know them.

The environments also are pale imitations of the first game's. Like the swamps used to be wild and idiosyncratic, but in the OP image for example it's just kind of a regular swamp with only the occasional reminder you're in a fantasy world, like a plant with a big pink bauble. I know they had more space to fill, but the textures just suck IMO, and I don't think it's because I played it on the wrong platform.

Two, it acts like it's challenge/secret-based like its predecessor, but it's really a lackadaisical platformer with no real interest in being amusingly challenging/cryptic. I admit not many 3D platformers of the time are terribly challenging, but there's something about other games that was more engaging. I think it has a lot to do with how Rayman's powers translated from 2D to 3D, the fist "evolved" in a very lazy where where it's just a projectile now, so I can snipe everything no problem.

Another problem is that the stages are super linear, so being a collectathon actually makes for an agonizing experience when you need to replay shit in the same exact manner rather than having free reign over a big environment.

I've played both the N64 and dreamcast version and the N64 version is superb, in terms of enjoyment it's pretty much the same. This is different from other games like San Francisco 2049 which are distinctly better on dreamcast and I prefer to play it on dc. Nice consolewarring though.

The N64 version has unique glitches the other versions don't have, not to mention all the textures are a lower resolution and there aren't as many polygons on screen as the other versions. Look at Rayman's hands in the N64 version, they don't even have fingers.

I'm sorry, but Mario 64 isn't that good. In fact, it basically killed platformers because every platformer after it had to have some kind of adventure element shoehorned into the game.

>> No.5841542

>>5841519
Most platformers after it were also 3D because that's what most studios wanted to work with and what most consumers wanted to play at the time, because it was new and impressive to people. Unfortunately other studios didn't have the talent or the perception to do anything other than try to copy Mario 64's structure (and they mostly failed even in this) instead of trying to capture the most important aspects of what makes Mario 64 great, i.e. its physics, movement, and control, with levels designed to flow with them. Nobody got this; even Nintendo post-64 only produced neutered renditions.

And why should studios even try to make something great when you've got a million retards who will be just as happy or even happier if you shovel shit like Sonic Adventure or Crash Bandicoot in front of them as long as the characters are aesthetic nightmares that look like they were focus-tested by downies and there's a ton of tedious garbage to collect and unlock and a pointless march to a 100% completion file.

The genre's too difficult for mediocre designers and its audience is too dumb anyway.

From what I can tell, N64 is the best.
The Dreamcast version is alright, it's pretty much the N64 version but with some cleaner visuals and some added minigames. They replaced the dreamy and mysterious Hall of Doors level select with something else, but it still mechanically works the same way.
The PS1 version is a complete shitshow, so much stuff was cut like (from what I can tell) the complete removal of underwater areas and even characters like Murphy all to make room for voice acting, but, although it looks a little different, they kept the Hall of Doors.
PS2 is kinda like the Dreamcast version with some updated graphics, but it has voice acting like the PS1 version and they replaced the level select thing they had going with the other versions with an actual hub world, which is dumb and unnecessary.
For me, it goes
N64 => Dreamcast > PS2 > PS1

I'm very biased towards this game, as it was probably the first 3D platformer I've ever played. Love the soundtrack and visuals, it's a very charming game, but the usual points of criticism are valid - it's seems to be a collectathon but the endeavor is pointless apart from extending your life bar by rescuing the Teensies. It also really easy and forgiving, in complete contrast to the predecessor. It's rather linear (unlike Rayman 3 which rewarded experimentation and exploring), and the fights are totally uninteresting apart from the bosses (again, this was improved in R3).
Still, a great game to revisit every now and then. It's not as obnoxious as its sequel but it also feels a bit empty in comparison.
