Level design doesn't need a traditional level progression system. Level design exists in the very design of every room in these games, and it also includes things like enemy and item placement. Because the player can and will sometimes need to enter a room from multiple different entrance points, the level design has to become "flatter" to compensate. There's way more interesting and challenging enemy and item placements in contract with the player's position in the pre-SOTN Castlevania games as a result (excluding 2).

It's not nearly as satisfying because it's not nearly as funneled. It's more consistently enjoyable, I'll give it that, but when you iron out the lows you also iron out the highs.

The Genesis is a pretty terrible console, there is almost nothing worth playing on it outside of the Sonic games. SNES (and most other retro consoles) shit on it in every way. Blows my mind that so many people say it's one of their favorites. I say this as someone who grew up with a Genesis.
