why the fuck would anyone willingly play a game made before the 2000s? seriously why?
the ideas and mechanics found in all of these so called retro games have been improved, or in some cases, perfected over the years

Honestly? We're people who understand new games are "better" technically but playing the games we played when we were younger brings us back to that time. If you can't tell we're a pretty hostile community and that's because our lives aren't exactly going great. We're either out of shape and girlfriendless or we're married and bitter about that and need an escape. It's not really about how good a game or console is. It's about how it makes us feel, and the nostalgic connection we have with it.

I can play a whole slew of games created under limitations that led to interactive pieces of art. I can play them on the original hardware bought off Ebay for a fraction of modern prices, on my PC or on my TV via Raspberry Pi, even on my phone if I want. And when I do I'm not sifting through the crap as it's produced; I can pick and choose the finest releases of three decades or dive deep into an obscure bullshit game that only resonates with me.

If someone told you that they listen to the best music from the 70s, 80s and 90s it would not be considered strange. They're just missing out on the turd slurry that comes from each generation and waiting until the gems have been found and washed clean.

Not him but OoT is regarded as the best retro game. In 1998 there was no other "open world" 3D game, Legacy of Kain was just a platformer. Today OoT isn't open world at all, it's boring and slow. The writing is bad. Breath of the Wild is objectively great, truly open world, and the physics engine is still being played with. Modern games are technically better.

But expansion packs, especially standalones, and sequels every several years are good though.

You can hand pick an fps from a few different series and those are fairly better when objectified. There's a whole slew of good platformers that have good camera positioning and better controls. There's a pleroma of metroidvania.
The kicker is even with all of these improved games, it can't detract from the legacy status of older games that did quite a bit right the first time around.
