How do I improve at this and SF2? I get to Jade and Nightwolf push my shit in, the only characters whose combos I have memorized are Cyrax, Jax and Saibot.

If you've ever played a fighting game enough to memorize all of a character's combos, let alone three, it's probably time to move on and play something else.

>> No.5778480

MK is one of those games notorious for reading inputs. Best way to beat all of them is to jump kick.

Throw and sweep. Most AI in these games have a set behavior for when they're knocked down that you can exploit. UMK3 I recall being susceptible to your own projectile spam if you stay fullscreen.

>> No.5780261

>>5780102
Every mk success story comes from finding an exploit again the AI and running it into the ground. The game punishes you if you try to mix it up or be clever and think you can improvise.

Few games have AI that feel like you are fighting a human opponent, but early mk was the worst of the worst. Every 1cc ever in this game came from some kind if repeated exploit.

Cannot be done. Go ahead and beat MK1 without using a single jumpkick. Just remove the one move from your arsenal and see how far you get by relying on your reflexes and skill alone, using the remaining moveset.

First off I'd pick one or the other to focus on to start. MK and SF play very differently so go with whichever appeals more and stick with it a bit and then once you have the overall scope down it's easier to spread out.

At this point if you've got the inputs and combos down, start fightibg real people and learn when and how to use them and when you defend and bait. There will likely be some losses but the more you play the more you'll learn.

>>5778478
Dude, this is where the fun is just starting. Learning the basics and combos in single player is basically training mode. Fighters truly get fun when you dive into multiplayer.

>> No.5780327

>>5780270
He's being a bit extremist but generally right. MK's AI is terrible so the only chance it has at winning is to cheat at it's own game. AI characters don't have to charge charge-moves and will read the player's inputs and react to the moves they do before the animation for it even starts. All retro Fighters are like that to some extent, but MK is notoriously bad for it.

The result though is that learning to beat Fighting Games in single player mode is totally different from playing them normally and it's ultimately no where near as satisfying. If you try to fight "fair" the AI will read what you're doing and just block and counter. The key to winning is to suss out what it has the hardest time dealing with (in MK it's jump kicks and sweeps) and spamming the computer with it.

It's a double whammy too because it both makes single player boring and winning feel like a hollow victory and at the same time it teaches you bad habits so when you do try playing real people you fight like a retard trying to cheese AI and invariably get mashed into the ground.

>> No.5780334

>> No.5780343

>>5780334
If it's exciting for you then have a blast. I think in multiplayer Fighters are one of the best and most fun genres of all time. In single player I think they're one of the worst and most shallow. We don't have to agree though. If you have fun, have fun!

>> No.5780345

>>5780334
No it isnt. Whats the point of having different combos and moves if the only way to beat the game is to spam a certain movement over and over from the first to the last fight.

>> No.5780349

>>5780345
pretty much all beat em ups rely on exploiting the AI and people have fun with that.

>> No.5780384

Not gonna lie, the only way I beat either SF2 or MK2/3 was by cheesing as Kitana and Dhalsim. As Kitana, I just threw fans over and over until they got close, then used the fan lift thingie to push them back. Dhalsim was all about spamming fire until they got in range and then using the long range strikes to beat them down, yoga flame if too close.

Only time I have ever done halfway well against other people was in OMF:2097 as Flail, and in Soul Calibur as Voldo.

It's not insecurity, I just don't understand the concept of playing a game just to experience it. Especially if you need to cheat to do so. Do you want to build a list of games you completed? Serious question, I don't really get why someone would wantbto play a fighter just to beat the computer and say they saw the ending.

So bottom line is, the CPU cheats and the only way I'm going to enjoy the game solo is by cheesing the bots and gitting gud. That being said, whats everyones favorite UMK3 character? I loved using Liu Kang to push Sindel's shit in when I was playing with my buddy.

The same as consuming any other literature or media, really. It's both fun and satisfying.

I don't know what you mean by this.
>Do you want to build a list of games you completed?
I catalog my experience with screenshots at key moments to better aid in recalling the games later, but otherwise, no.
>I don't really get why someone would wantbto play a fighter just to beat the computer and say they saw the ending
Depends on the game. If it's fun (Tekken 1/2/3, Blood Roar 1/2) tearing through the missions to see all of the cutscenes can be quite enjoyable. Once I've seen everything, I move on to the next thing.

Maybe he's just curious what Mortal Kombat is all about, but doesn't have the sheer amount of hours it takes to learn a fighting game before you can play it "for real".

>> No.5780858

>>5780701
Some people play games just to play them. That's the best way to play fighting games, too, you know--to put yourself into it and let the things that you've learned flow naturally, interrupting to shake yourself out of a bad habit or adapt to a specific strat on the other side. No one should want to be, or wants to be around, the kind of person who treats games like work as a means to elevate themselves in what they're convinced, contrary to reason, is a metric for superiority over others. Throw the "competitive" aspect around all you want, but even real athletes know how to be humble and talk about "love of the game." The only difference between your average "hardcore" fighting gamer and a severe Asperger's case is their use of slang.

It might be just different philosophies. I've never been interested in playing through as many games as possible, I tend to try a bunch until one really clicks and then focus on that. Not saying yours is wrong, it's iust different enough from mine it seems odd. But whatever, the point about cheating is that I feel at high difficulties in old fighters especially, beating them does feel like cheating because all you're doing is spamming exploits.

>>5780858
>to put yourself into it and let the things that you've learned flow naturally, interrupting to shake yourself out of a bad habit or adapt to a specific strat on the other side

I agree, but I think single player mode is absolutely terrible for that. And I'm not talking about playing them being work, it's the total opposite. I don't talk up how great player vs player fighting games are because I think it makes me special at all. I do it because I think single player is a bad representation of how incredibly fun the games can be. And nor just at high level. Two people new to a game can have just as much fun as two tourney bros.

Like I said earlier, if you enjoy it then have a blast. Just like all the folks who like Beat Em Ups, I don't have to agree with what someone else finds fun. But if the subject comes up I'm going to give my opinion. I really do think these are some of the best games ever made.

Mortal Kombat is made to be played against a human. Beating single player mode is just about exploiting the AI.
