This is the worst beat-em up ever. How did this shit sell?

>> No.5764670

It's a fun game

>> No.5764673

Nah it's not the worst even if you only look at the notable games, you can get some fun in it dabbing on the helpless enemies for a couple of playthroughs until you get the 1cc and move on. It's extremely short too. Then you have TMNT Turtles In Time, a miserable experience from the beginning that just gets worse the more you play the game.

>> No.5764681

>>5764673
Oh, and Turtles In Time isn't easy either, it kicks you in the balls constantly and the reward for learning the game is looking like a fucking spastic spamming special moves nonstop. Fuck that game.

>> No.5764689

Ninja Gaiden Arcade is waaay better, but you people shit on that for some reason.

Hate to say it, but the whole beat em up genre is pretty shit.

You learn what the best move is and use it. Turtles in Time, Battletoads, Sonic Blast Man, Simpsons arcade. There's one move and you fucking spam it. Dash attack. Air kick. Special attack.

At least Toads had the gumption to mix things up with level design.

>>5764872
I agree. Beat em ups are for low IQ people.

>> No.5764891

>>5764872
Play better beat em ups, or play beat em ups better. Games like Final Fight arcade have a bunch of moves all of which are useful, and games like Alien vs Predator might have some degenerate strategies but they become quite a bit more varied when you play aggressively.

>> No.5764895

>>5764891
I'm not saying they don't have a place or that they are worthless, just as I got older they kinda seemed like one-truck ponies.

I love games like Cadillacs and Dinosaurs but they all kinda fall prey to the same issues as a genre.

There are some definitely good ones out there but as a whole, they kinda feel like quarter-sucking bullshit.

>> No.5764904

>>5764895
Cadillacs & Dinosaurs is another potentially spammy game if you pick Mustapha, but with Mess most moves are quite useful though it does suffer from forwards throw being a bit degenerate since it replaces normal combo in a lot of situations. But that's the problem with giving the player a ton of very distinct moves, some will inevitably come out on top in some situations, you'd need some very complex systems/AI to counter that, or band aid solutions like style meters. A bad beat em up gives you one move that answers most if not all situations. In a good beat em up you will use a variety of tactics and the fun is figuring out what to use where, along with keeping things under control when you inevitably fuck up your plan due to random AI or failure in execution.

Turtles in Time is retardedly easy how you could say otherwise is baffling. I beat it one morning before school in an era where I very rarely beat games because I was shit, and I remember even at that time thinking that the game isn't that good because it's too easy (and this is long before I really even had the concept of challenge = good, but it was easy to the point of being a detriment even then)

>> No.5765057

>>5764872
For me it's similar to the RPG genre, in that the average run of the mill game is a boring repetitive slog. But the few at the top that are really good are fucking amazing.

It was released in 1989. Probably Final Fight was the only one that was better at that time.

Also, It's got great realistic graphics, a cast of memorable characters that people still remember them nowadays, you were able to ride dragons and others creatures, its got awesome magic attacks (the best ones at that time) a fantastic soundtrack, etc.

One of my favourite things, though, was how it got so right the amotsphere of a sword and sorcery film, and the feeling you were on a dangerous journey, even if the game was very short.

The only other beat'em ups on Amiga I can remember were Franko the Crazy Revenge and Doman which believe it or not were much worse. We had some great games but very few beat'em ups. This is why we loved Golden Axe. One of the few games that looked like this japanese stuff we know from arcades and solid fantasy with dragons you can mount and shit.

Ninja gaiden feels like a very slow walking simulator, and combat is so sluggish it feels like it is happening underwater.

>> No.5766081

It's from 1989, bro. Compare it to other games from that period and tell me it's not a winner. It looks great and it's memorable.

It's got plenty of flaws, but honestly I still enjoy testing my memory and trying to 1cc it every now and then.

It didn’t sell. You put a coin in the machine, enjoyed it, or moved on to another game. The people who enjoyed it bought home versions as they became available. Simple as that. Nobody was tricked or fooled into buying this game.

Lads could you help me out? Back when I was around 7 my dad bought me a cd with 100 games on it (all released before 2000), I managed to find some of them through the years but a very significant one is missing.

Basically, the setting is similar to the vanilla super mario (enemies patrolling numerous platforms) but I cannot remember if the goal is to kill them all or simply manage to get to the uppermost platform. And I suspect that the name of the character you are is dennis, and you look like a kid. Also, it is possible that you had some kind of a drill as a weapon. 1 more detail: the first levels were in a cave. Please halp

No you just have good tastes, Final Fight fucking nailed it and even though it's a bit unrefined, the flaws are very minor and what it does well it does REALLY fucking well. I love how relentless the enemies act, and how useful all the moves are. Really good pacing too besides a couple of sections, just a great game even without historical importance aside
