I beat it 21 years ago or something and it still feels boring as shit.
I had played unreal first though, which really blew it out of the water.

The game is objectively ok. You can stop making this thread.

>Weapon design is better than Boom's weapon design.
Debatable at best.

>Enemies look cool.
They do, some of them are great.

>Graphics aren't too dated because it wasn't trying to look realistic.
Disagree, the wobbly vertex animations do not look that hot. The textures and lighting is nice, but most people played with hideous smear filters.
The monsters look pretty good, and the weapons look decent, but they BEG for a muzzleflash effect. A blob of dynamic light is not a muzzleflash.

>Multiplayer.
It was tits.

>The game acknowledges rocket jumping in the singleplayer.
Using explosives to reach places and secret levels date back to Quake and Doom. E3M9 could only be reached by using the explosion of a rocket to jettison yourself into a box in E3M5 in Doom.

>Default Weapon sounds cool and is also a flashlight.
The blaster pistol is weak and piddly as hell. I'd rather have a proper lamp.

>Can throw grenades before you get the launcher, and they have a cool model and throw animation.
They have THE most pitiful range though, and the launcher just isn't much better.

Rocket jumping was in Marathon well before Quake existed, and much better implemented at that

Original Quake is the only Quake I recognize as a Quake game. I played Quake 2 not too long ago and while it was decent, the original Quake was way better.

I want a true successor to the original Quake which allows players to use grenade launchers to blow up plate armor knights in a gothic castle.

Rise Of The Triad (a game where most weapons are rocket launchers) also had rocket jumping, requiring it for you to get the good ending.

Quake 1 definitely brought the idea to the forefront, but it had been done one way or the other for quite a few years, and iD just finally acknowledged the concept in Quake 2.

>>5768097
I definitely like the first one the most.
I kinda like the whole Strogg stuff, they're like The Borg from Star-Trek but if they were designed for 2000 AD comics and Heavy Metal magazine , but I never felt it fit with the first game at all.

I know there was something about rights and trademarks, they had considered another title but then settled on calling it Quake 2 for brand recognition, I wish they'd have given it a subtitle or something. I wouldn't have minded too much if they just used the Quake name for an anthology series, every entry was a different shooter in a different setting, but they revisited Stroggos and Arena a bunch of times, and by now I'd really love to see another go at all that gothic Slipgate goodness.

what is the problem with quake 2? I played the shit out of it back when it came out. really fun single player, but the real blast was adding in gladiator bots. I had shit internet back then so i mostly played with bots, but i spent hours doing so. I would get cool models from polycount and use them for bots. characters like blade and john mcclane. Fun times.

The setting of Quake 1 is definitely superior to that of Quake 2. The latter is a cool H.R. Giger type thing, but fades in comparison to the strange concept of the first game.

Imagine not having been born when it came out. Then shitting on it when you think you're "retro" because you played it on GOG.

I bought it the day it came out. It was it was fking awesome.

I played it when it was new as a kid, and either it or Goldeneye was my first FPS.
I thought it was one of the coolest games I had ever seen, and even though I like Doom, Duke, and Quake 1 much more now, I think Quake 2 is still a pretty good game (6.8/10ish) that holds up.

Some people complain that hitscanners aren't fair (we call those people fags), but Quake 2's hitscanners are more lenient than most and can actually be dodged easily.
