Give me all /vr/ examples of breaking fourth wall you can remember. Pic related is an excellent one in PSX MGS where a boss character reads your memory card and tells you you enjoy Konami games. I'd mention the ultimate wallbreaker in the second MGS but iT'S nOt ReTRo
I also remember the watchman in first Monkey Island telling Guybrush that "there are people watching this"

Half the goddamn NPCs in Link's Awakening talk directly to the player.
Ultima 2 has a number of references to Wizardry's devs and pop music, and one guy claims to have a copy of Ultima 3.
Earthbound had lots of talking to the player.
You can meet the devs in Zombies Ate My Neighbors, Herc's Adventures, and The Immortal.

little ninja bros on nes has the absolute best one i've ever seen, by far. it fakes an nes glitch screen at a critical moment to fuck with the player. damn near gave me a heart attack in elementary school. well-played.

Down the World: Mervil's Ambition (SNES) starts with the main character searching for a hero, and he finds one in the human world.

You, the player, are the hero.

He also faces you and asks what he should do every time you are given a choice. Even as mundane as whether to sleep at the inn. The other characters in the game can't see you though.

I probably should add that the synopses of the game on the interwebs say that you are Mervil, but that's wrong. Mervil is the antagonist.

Rincewind in the intro to Discworld 2.
Musing about how he's going to miss adventure games when they stop making them, and saying that because the visuals have improved there's probably going to be less puzzles.

Ok, so I swear there was a scene in Crash Bandicoot 2, where you talk to Dr. Nemisis(?) (can’t remember his name, but he’s the guy with the green shirt and the long head, and he told me he would use the gems to destroy my PlayStation to defeat Dr. Cortex. I got scared and stopped collecting the gems after that. Turns out the scene doesn’t actually exist, so...

Fallout 2 has many moments like so. My IP range is banned so I can't post images, but a few dialogue lines read:
>I know Fallout 2 isn't a 3D game, but it still should support my brand new GeForce card.
>Oh well, I thought there weren't any children because this might be the European version of Fallout 2. Goodbye.
>I auditionaed for the part of one of the major NPCs, but I only got this bit NPC part. I hope I don't get typecast.

The best one is in gen 7. If you bring a Pokemon from one of the virtual console releases of gen 1 or gen 2, one of the developers will share random facts about those games' development history. A lot of them were things nobody knew before.
