Got quite the collection of old consoles and considering methods of hooking them up to a modern screen. What do you guys do/use?

Anyone use or have thoughts on device in pic?

Consider a CRT (commonly known as "tube") television!

CRT television because I refuse to put up with the garbage input lag that is a "feature" of LCDs.

I'd like to say bullshit but probably just a retarded hipster. Lurk moar. The truth is out there. Like a million times.

Since the CRT autists will ignore you, I'll provide some actual help. If you just want to hook retro consoles up to modern panels with the fewest headaches, get a Retrotink 2x. If you're willing to spend time to dial in settings on a per-console basis for the best image quality, get an OSSC. If for some reason you want to run a console that only supports composite or s-video on the OSSC, get the Retrotink 2x along with a $12 HDMI to YPbPr transcoder. It's not worth bothering with anything else, you're either going to get degraded image quality, multiple frames of added lag on top of what your display already has, or both.

AVR S-910w

It's a Denon Receiver. 7 HDMI ports and 2 component ports. I mostly own it for the component conversion.

Component for Genesis/Sega CD and original Xbox

Akura box for Dreamcast
PS3 HDMI for PS1 and PS2
Retrotink S-Video for 3DO

I'm waiting on this to see if HDMI SNES is actually possible
https://hyperkinlab.com/3-in-1-hdtv-cable-for-gamecube-n64-snes-hyperkin/

If it ends up shit, I'll just get a component switch and use component cables for SNES

Why bother with any of that shit?
Just get RGB to a OSSC or Framemeister. Those offer the best compatibility and a simple chain from console to tv.

>> No.5717102

Just emulate, don't worry if it's only 95% accurate, thats nerd shit

>> No.5717237

>>5717094
Framemeister is an expensive meme these days. Best thing I can say about it is compatibility, so it can be useful as a video processor for capture. But mandatory two frames of lag and wildly inaccurate colorspace conversion should be dealbreakers, as should its complete inelegance in handling resolution switches.

>> No.5717306

If you're not going to get a CRT just use an emulator for gods sake.

Hyperkin cables are hit or miss. The SNES pound cable is garbage so Hyperkin can't be worse

>> No.5717621

>>5717094
Framemeister is garbage. For 300 you can have an advanced AVR with surround sound capabilities and 4k passthrough with conversion for most retro consoles that looks good on modern TV with component and HDMI modifications.

There's simply no reason to buy a framemeister and switch out tons of RGB cables anymore

What modern screen do you suggest?

I only need 720P as that is a good 3x from most of the old games I play. The 1080p monitors may not scale right as they are in-between 4x and 5x scale. By now they should have mastered 720p, so the good ones should be cheap as everyone has moved onto 4k. I am looking for low to 0 input lag, fast response times, high refresh rates, and great colors.

I have not tried that converter/switch, but it seems really cool.

Ya no

The best displays for this kind of thing are Sony TVs and a good one only comes every few years. No idea about the current line up.

I was looking at that Pixio monitor at 1440p, which has a high refresh rate and low input latency but has a poor refresh rate and colors, but that is over $300USD. I am thinking the technology for 720p monitors must be mature by now and maybe I could get one with the features I am looking for used at a price I can afford.

>> No.5718056

>>5718050
No one but no name chink companies offer a 720p monitor. Like what ever this Pixio shit is. I guess they are some chinkshit with a SUPREME logo rippoff.

Gaming monitors and color don't go together. Correct colors is a negative for that application. You want the gamma maxed or close to maxed.

I use an Akura for my Dreamcast and a Retrotink 2x for everything else (Saturn/PS2/SNES/3D0). N64 doesnt work well with the Tink, has sound issues.

Its not the most high end ballin outta control setup but it's more than adequate for me.

I'm just lucky in that I have a 1080p Panasonic Plasma that can just handle 240p over Component without problems.

>> No.5718486

Waiting on one of these 240p scalers to do 9x scale to fit 4k perfect. A 9x scale without any filtering looks so good with emulators on my oled.

A good TV will just take 480p and handle it as well.

>> No.5718949

That would be a 4.5 scale instead of a even 9x scale on 240p content. 480p will will need black bars or some sort of filtering to eliminate scaling artifacts

N64 sound runs at nearly twice the voltage it should, you can fix overmodulation problems with an $8 volume knob like this one: https://www.amazon.com/PAC-LC-1-Remote-Amplifier-Controller/dp/B0002J226O/

>Maybe check other brands then
They are worthless, especially, when considering games. They can be good if you want to watch movies at native resolution though. Nobody comes close to Sony's scaling engine quality or their strobe tech.
>You do basic research on a topic then act like you know it all.
The opposite. I talk with an expectation of competency. Some retard saying a Korean trash TV is good because they saw a demo unit with the brightness maxed at best buy is about your level right now.

If Sony made a good TV I'd pay a premium for them. Fact is the Korean brands have past Sony a long time ago. At this point even Chinese brands have passed them. Litteraly no one else on the internet will say sony makes the best TV for anything. My entire post was about feeding native 4k to a 4k tv and your talking about scaling engines. You are delusional. Don't bother replying, I'm not gonna read whatever garbage you regurgitate out.

This a retro board, kiddo. I think it's a very relevant point to talk about scaling engines. Btw, Sony doesn't really make many panels anymore. You're basically buying a Korean panel with a Sony scaling engine and strobe when you buy a Sony TV. Anyone saying the shit brand TVs have better performance in those specific areas is a retard. For gaming Sony is the dominate brand by a fucking mile.
