Pure turn based RPG. From games like Dragon Quest to Wizardry like dungeon crawlers. What are some of your favorite turn base RPG?

I really need to retry SMT again. Finally got the mobile version thinking I would just enjoy that and it was fun. But a little bit after the world ended and you were wondering the world the controls started to feel bad and so I just never finished it. Might just play the SNES version and see.

I recently finished the first Phantasy Star game on my Switch. It was an interesting experience. Makes me want a modern turn-based Phantasy Star.

I think the only other retro turn-based game I have finished are the first few gens of Pokemon.

Does GBA count as retro here? If so then I also love the GBA Fire Emblem games.

But those games are piss easy. I don't think I got a game over even once.
Play the Wizardry games if you want to see hard JRPGs.

I was always under the impression these games had piloted mecha and not power suits for some reason. Doesn't really change anything but still

>> No.5711150

>>5711128
You walk around towns and even inside buildings while still in your suits.
There's one NPC in the first town who asks to shake your hand and then says "ow you're crushing my hand!" If you go back there later in the game and talk to him again, you accidentally step on his foot.

I tried many times to get into the SaGa games. Luckily, after the fifth try I finally got the hang of it and I've been having a blast with those games. Can't believe I've missed so much.
I'm currently going through Frontier scenarios. After I'm done with Red and Lute I'll go for one of the GB games.
Also, why is Sparking abilities so good?

Was thinking of picking up Romance 2 or 3 on Switch. Always been meaning to get into them but the only time people talk about is how weird they are. Any tips on how one should go about playing them?

>> No.5711450

>>5711335
Romancing 3 hasn't been released yet. Romancing 2 is great. I'd advise to go blind, but the game can be kind of a bitch.

Was going to get 3 when it finally comes out but I'll try out SaGa 2 and see. I did play all of FF2 about a decade ago so I kind of know what to expect but I feel knowing Kawazu insanity there must be more to it. But I'll go in blind and see how things play out.

>> No.5711487

Suikoden II, probably the best story in a pure turn-based RPG
DQ3, amazing class system and exploration
FF1, same
Breath of Fire III, I loved the art style and dragon transformations, the whole game felt like a 90's anime

That's the best part of the game.
Pick a guide if you think you missed something or if you want ot understand a bit of the mechanics; the good SaGa experience is exploring the world, sparking techniques and take new routes once you hit a wall.

Just to tell you or that Anon there's a house on the hill that you can do a pretty easy quest to get his toolset which gives you some cheese that can help in the fight (plus add a bit more encounters for a level or two).

I preferred GunTechs and MecTechs in Frontier.... Sparking techs are pretty annoying since they're only a handful of characters with really good sparklists , and the rest of 'em are just MEH.

I don't know... I liked getting those abilities for the first time, especially when you need that extra 300 damage to topple a difficult enemy.
Coincidentially, my favourites were the fighting abilities because I was raking up heavy damage very early with dem kicks and piledrives. And I barely touched a gun because I hardly did good damage with them, even with QuickDraw, and only gave them to mechs for the QUI stat.
