Super >>> Return of Samus > Metroid > Fusion

Original game is dragged down a lot by having to grind for health pickups. 2 solved this and also made movement more enjoyable, though the bosses weren't as cool and it lacked variety. Fusion had the best boss fights and pretty good map design but it was ruined by handholding and arbitrarily getting locked out of areas. Super is as close to perfect as a game can get.

I can agree with this list, except I like Metroid 2 more than this poster, and would put it closer to Super. My opinion is heavily tainted by nostalgia, tho. Hunting a bunch of Metroids that get stronger as the game progresses was so exciting for me as a kid, and that ending was one of the best I had ever seen, but I'll bet people who pick it up for the first time nowadays have a harder time getting into it.

Super > Metroid 2 > Fusion >>> Metroid 1

Metroid 1 is just a very rough game overall, rife with bad design and clone rooms designed to make you lost. It's just unnecessarily frustrating. A groundbreaking first attempt at a new idea? Yes. A good game that's fun to play? No, not really, it's mostly tedious and annoying. Fusion might have a lot of handholding, but I can still enjoy it as a more action-oriented game whereas I find it difficult to actually enjoy Metroid 1.

I was really disappointed in Fusion when I played through it for the first time, recently.

I thought I wouldn't mind if a Metroid game was linear or had more emphasis on story, especially since I really liked Metroid 2 and Prime 3, but Fusion just somehow does the linearity in a much less likable manner. It feels like you're constantly being restricted by unnecessary barriers. It never feels like the game really hits its own stride and you're constantly being interrupted. And that isn't helped at all by how short the game is.

It had some really good music, though. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rp2b3EYFAXw

There isn't really much to debate imo, Super is the best game in the series by a wide margin, with Prime coming in behind it.

I think it's an improvement over the original, but would prefer if it didn't have the waypoint system. Even so, I think it's worth playing but I've never felt compelled to play it a second time.

It's trivial to completely ignore the hints; there are a large number of clearly intentional sequence breaks to take advantage of. You really ought to give it a second look

Top: Metroid, Super Metroid
Mid: Metroid II, Zero Mission
Low: Fusion, AM2R
Bottom: 3DS piece of shit

It's alright--progression feels inevitable and predictable, like you're playing Sudoku. The original is much better--feels threatening, alive, and the possibility of complete failure seems plausible.

I kind of feel like Super Metroid is really the epitome of 2d metroid. Everything else is just an inferior version of Super and all lack one or two, differing qualities that made Super Metroid so great.
Obviously, 1 and 2 were what SM was built off of, but Fusion, ZM and Samus Returns don't have the same excuse.

Metroid 1 is just not a very good game, anon. Every single game in the series has been a leaps and bounds improvement over it. Don't confuse something being novel or groundbreaking with it actually being good. It's like a rough draft of the Metroid series gameplay concept.

I played and finished it for the first time a few years ago, and I think it's the best 2D game in the series to play right now, not for its time, not because it's groundbreaking.
