Holy heck. This game is surprisingly spooky. Whoever decided that cannon-fodder enemies should get less common the further you venture into SR388's caves and deeper into Metroid territory is a genius.

Yeah, this game's a classic. Some idiot who doesn't know what atmosphere is will come and tell you to play the milquetoast fanmade remake instead, but the original in monochrome is the real shit.

I feel like after a point you get so used to just jumping around empty caverns you easily get spooked whenever you find a metroid. especially those fucking omega and zeta fuckers.

Metroid 2 really is one of the few games where I got a weird sense of a "being left behind" type of anxiety playing it. Like the kind of feeling you might get as a kid and you think your parents are leaving a store without you.

Having less and less standard enemies as you go deeper was also a bold choice that modern games just wouldn't do. You really get that "here there be dragons" feeling that you're treading where you really shouldn't and escalates the tension really well.

Can't decide if this or super is my favorite in the series. The mood and atmosphere is probably the best in the series and it has one of my favorite final boss fights in all of video games.

I like the original and AM2R but for different reasons. Since they go for two completely different things it's a little hard to say that one is better than the other. They're less comparable than Metroid and Metroid Zero Mission.

Anon why did you have to remind me of the post-Queen section of Samus Returns?

>> No.5649492

I've never played ALL the way through the original Metroid because my first game was Zero Mission and I found it a bit redundant to do. This one, I've never played in any way....I kind of want to but I'm wondering if I've been too spoiled by map systems to enjoy it now

If you're worried about getting lost, don't be. The game is pretty linear and does a good job of using music to inform you of where you are. I've never gotten lost in Metroid 2, even as a child, and I've never tried to map it out or anything. For contrast, I get lost as fuck in Metroid 1 every time I try to play it.

>For contrast, I get lost as fuck in Metroid 1 every time I try to play it.
That's probably because Metroid 1 reuses a fuck ton of rooms to inflate the size of the game without increasing its size. I don't think Metroid 2 does this.

More the former, but also the latter. Samus Returns completely butchers the finale of Metroid 2 by cramming in needless combat after the game's arc had already peaked and passed. The term "falling action" could be used to defend the few enemies you encounter along the way back to Samus's ship but the pointless fight with you know who just shits all over everything.
It's needless fan-service, just like the entire post-Mother Brain sequence in Zero Mission, that results in an anti-climax.

>> No.5649528

Samus Returns felt like it was made by people who completely misunderstood what made Metroid II interesting. You were the one on the hunt in the game. You were eradicating the Metroids- and for good reason. The further you went in, you got to see the impact they were having on the ecosystem of the world.

Samus Returns on the other hand implemented an entire mechanic based around enemies coming up to you and wanting to fuck up your shit. Every enemy being more aggressive de-emphasized the hostility the Metroids were causing.

As a side note, Samus Returns also fucking made me realize just how far behind Nintendo's fallen in terms of the Metroidvania genre. $40. $40 for this thing, when Hollow Knight released half a year earlier for cheaper?

Metroid2 was my second GB game after Marioland2, and it freaked the hell out of my 9year-old self. Needed almost half a year to get through it. It seemed incredibly immersive back then, even though it was black/white and 8bit only. Never felt quite anything like entering the last area... like here:

To be honest, Samus returns felt enough like a complete re-imagining of 2 for me to not really care when they took liberties. That's not to say that I think the atmosphere in SR was better, just that I found it to be a completely enjoyable game in its own right and I really appreciated the fact that the game bridged the gap between the Prime series and 2D series through music mixes, graphical styles, ridley's appearance. Personally, I thought it was cool that the interior of Samus's ship was lifted directly from Prime 3.

I feel that both games are really worth playing to anyone who is a fan of the metroid series.

Play super metroid. Then branch out to stuff like fusion, zero mission and the prime series.

Personally, instantly fell in love with super and then worked my way through the series with prime, nes, prime 2, metroid 2, prime 3 and fusion. Probably a bad order, but I loved it.

I played Zero Mission first and then just recently played Metroid for the first time. They're very dissimilar games, and finishing it I realized that Metroid is far better.

Playing through ZM feels like going through the motions, like your playing Sudoku and reaching the end is an inevitable result for anyone who's paying even a small amount of attention.

Metroid feels like being dropped in the wilderness with no GPS or phone and enough food and water to last a day or two. With a decent setup it also looks and sounds better.
