I was playing this game today....

Amazing soundtrack, so fast, what the hell happened to video games? They used to be all about skill. Now it's all story driven bullshit.

Sonic 3 felt very weird to me back when it came out.
Right from the start, the CGI Sonic on the title screen unsettled me, on one hand I thought it was cool to see a "3D" render like that, but something about it felt off, not as slick as Sonic 1 or 2's badass Sonic, this one seems rounder and cuter. Thinking back, it does look like a clay model of the japanese Sonic design, and it's pretty cool, but back then, it creeped me out.
The game starts and the intro cutscene with Super Sonic is nice, but then Angel Island didn't feel as colorful or vibrant as GHZ or EHZ. Also, while the music is really good, the way it's more sample-based as opposed to the more clean stuff Nakamura did in 1 and 2 also put me off a little bit. It's more focused on rhythm than melody, which isn't a bad thing (and I'm not saying it doesn't have melodies), but Sonic 1 and 2 are way more melodic. At the time, Sonic 3 sounded more impressive for sure though, it had more "real instruments" and even a few vocal samples including MJ's "woo!" on the mini-boss music (which changes if you're playing it with S&K). But I remember clearly how I didn't feel the same excitement with Angel Island's theme as I did with the other games' first level music.
I still loved and played it to death, but it never topped 1 or 2 for me.

The best action-heavy retro games are on MAME, but if you must play console the Genesis is a great pick.

>Alien Soldier
>Gunstar Heroes
>Contra Hard Corps
>Shinobi (all 3 of them)
>Castlevania Bloodlines
>Ristar
>Thunder Force (all 3 of them)
>every Toaplan shooter
I could go on and on. The Genesis is one of the best consoles ever made.

Not very action-heavy, and TF II, while a cult classic, isn't very action-heavy as the other 2 on the system. It's a port of a PC game after all.

Same happened to me. I remember being quite disappointed with the overall artstyle when the first previews appeared in magazines. Something about the game felt off after the awesome-looking first 2 games.

Sonic 3 and Knuckles are good games, but the change in artstyle, with more gritty 3D, and the lack of Masato Nakamura really made the game feel very different to the prequels. Also, Carnival Night was like a souless clone of Casino Night.

Right, but S3 Complete still isn't the way devs intended, it's still a romhack. We don't know how the actual original game was going to be like, so we got what we got, and that is a stand-alone release of Sonic 3, followed by Sonic & Knuckles some time later. The developer's intention isn't just their original prototype intention, but also the cards they were dealt with and how they managed. The Sonic 3/Knuckles experience is as 2 separate games that can combine.

Also Carnival Night has much much much more soul than Casino Night, this is not even arguable.
When Knuckles turns off the light the level has a soul to it that Casino Night simply doesn't.

>Right, but S3 Complete still isn't the way devs intended
You're wrong actually.
It's based on an actual build, it's not just fanwank.

Just patch out the ice cap colors, patch out the fanmade icons and it's pretty much perfect.

Sonic 3C with the "Pick by Zone/Game" option(can't remember which was it) where you hear all the S3 themes for the S3 Zones and all the S&K themes for the S&K zones and the credit medley that is taken from one of the Complete Sonic 3 builds which has Hydrocity in it is objectively the best way to experience S3K.

Fuck ever going back to the retail version of 3K. It's almost insulting to what is imo the best game of all time. Just fuck ever replacing the MJ themes when you can have the best of both worlds.
Fuck them for ever doing that, the soundtrack is Elder God-tier and deserves to be heard in its entirety.

And as for "Muh developers" fuck off already.
They were planning to release Sonic 3 Limited Edition but Sega didn't let them.

Sonic 3K deserves the fucking best. Fuck the meme release it got.
I'm never ever going to play that version anymore and have never played it since Sonic 3 Complete was a thing.

A cutscene with Knuckles doesn't counter all the points I made. Maybe Sonic 3 was your first Sonic, maybe you prefer a more gritty, semi-realistic style as opposed to a more psychedelic colorful one, but you're not really giving any solid arguments.
I vastly prefer Nakamura's stuff to Michael Jackson's music team (not really him other than a few beatbox'd tape recordings for some melodies and beats that may or may not have been used in the final game). Although I'm not a pleb to dismiss 3&K either, there's some really top-tier stuff in there like Hydrocity, but I mean, Nakamura created the Sonic music sound. GHZ might be one of the most easily recognizable vidya music tunes ever.
Anyway, I'm not even arguing that you MUST prefer 1 and 2 over 3, or trying to start a Nakamura vs MJ thing. I love 3, I said that. I just explained why I felt unsettled by it when I played it for the first time when it came out.

Not him, and I don't blame you if you don't know him if you're not Japanese or Asian, but the dude along with his band Dreams Come True are one of the biggest pop music acts.
In fact, Sega approached him because he was a talented, famous musician. The very first time Sonic appeared at all outside of Sega's offices was in a Dreams Come True tour poster circa 1989/1990.

You barely know a couple songs Michael actually did for the Sonic games, the rest are completely Japanese, so what is this shit about? Masato Nakamura doesn't deserve this kind of hate, especially for the work he did on 1. I believe the Hata+Gatao duo still produced the best Sonic music ever made, but of course people are going to gravitate towards the better known names.

>>5575448
You're super wrong and are using totally unrelated facts to as proof. S3 has had a lot of ideas scrapped, more than you could ever think about; maybe not as much as Sonic 2, but close. And calling Sonic 3K a meme release is actually really funny and the entropic conclusion to all the S3 Complete cock slobbering. And I'm not even saying having multiple customizable options and one single ROM for everything is a bad thing, but the overarchingly growing dichotomy of "s3k bad, s3c good" has been so prominent and insufferable these last few years that I kinda guess it would come to this final ridiculous statement.

I completely disagree. Sonic 3 is a game I actually learned to appreciate more after awhile. At first I was sure that the second game was the best but after playing them all over the years and also realizing that the real version of Sonic 3 is also with it combined with Knuckles in order for it to be the full experience it was intended to be I got to go with Sonic 3&K as the true best Sonic game of the Genesis era. They pretty much nailed the level design to a science by the time they got to these games and the amount of detail and care put into it all as well as how the story is even told in these games was all done with a lot of care and understanding of how Sonic as a franchise should have been.

Yeah I know that it can be argued that 3&K should not count as one separate game or how Sega shouldn't have "jewed" people but these are just excuses at the end of the day. And recent fan remasters of this game to me prove that this was indeed peak Sonic. The only issue I can maybe find about it is mostly nitpicky stuff like how Super Sonic's theme song is way too repetitive and they should have did something better with that or how blue spheres I think isn't too great of a mini game and that maybe Sega should have did either a better one or varied them up or something idk. There is also the Drop Dash but again I don't think the old games could be faulted too much for lacking this. Had TS at the time thought to include Drop Dash into S3&K back then then the games would have been way better even then 2 and 1.

For me its S3&K > 2 > 1

I think S3&K is probably my favorite platforming game. I'm not huge on the genre but this is as close to a perfect game as you could get. Especially those fan remakes making these games even better.
