Finally played this for the first time... and... uh, it's not good

How is this game "hardcore" if there are literally buttons to skip battles, speed up, and LITERALLY auto win? How is /vr/ so infatuated with a game that has, essentially, a "skip the game" mode?

Also whatever boss is in the pic related artwork isn't actually in the game, so lol. It seems like it might be a WEAPON or some other robot but meh. Game is too easy either way.

The only reason this heap of shite gets praise is that it was the first game for many many many kiddies who's first console was a PS1.
All those that came before, even janky 1, and fucky 2, are better in all regards to 7.

It's 'just another' RPG. It does nothing 6 didn't, it does far less than previous installments and the villain was just sort of this annoying teenager you follow around all game.

Who cares? It was a JRPG, it was like many before it, like many after it, and it will be like many more that come.

There are fine, fine examples of how JRPGs can be used to their potential. Final Fantasy is generally one of the worst examples of what JRPGs can do and is generally only a single step up on the ladder from DW, which is about as vanilla and plain as you go into RPGs.

I love 7 almost solely because of the improvements to the ATB system. I'm not a big fan of the SNES ones because even at max speed ATB battles tend to go slower than the normal turn based mode, which partially defeats the point.

Can 8 and 9 be set to an ATB speed as high as 7's? If so I really need to give them a shot.

I wouldn't say it's not good, but it is certainly overrated. I held this game on a pretty high pedestal up until a year ago when I replayed it for the first time since probably 2000, and it isn't nearly as much fun as it was back then. The story is meh, some of the characters and their motivations suck, and obviously the graphics are pretty bad now. Still, it has a lot of timeless elements, the OST is amazing still, the battle and materia system are still good. Sadly, it just didn't hold up to FF8, FF9, and FF10, and a lot of other more contemporary JRPGs released over the last 20-years.
