It was a pretty alright game. Worth mentioning in any decent list of must-plays for the PSX, but not at the top of any lists. Somewhere around Koudelka or Legend of Dragoon.

Everything good the original Japanese King's Field does they did better with Shadow Tower. It's interesting as a jap exclusive but Shadow Tower Abyss is better for that too.

I enjoyed Kings Field 4 on PS2 a lot because of the music and atmosphere. Found it very unique in those aspects. Gameplay not so much.

He's right though. KF was a cult game in Japan, but the west never gave too much shit about it at all until Souls became popular and people started digging into From Software.
Also, I had KF 3 (I think it's KF2 in the west), back in the day. I got it randomly from a store, bootleg. Pretty sure it was the japanese version.
I remember enjoying it a bit for the creepy atmosphere, but I thought it was a kusoge, I took it as a guilty pleasure of sorts. I had no idea the series was considered cult back then.

I've only played through 2. (first us game) Runs at like 4 fps if more than one enemy is moving on screen, the post is alright but could use more tracks, not having a map is annoying, and it takes fucking forever to actually gain a usable amount of gold. If anything they're ambitious games, but would have faired better with a pc release imo.

Pretty cool game.

King's Field 1 was really fun and not too troublesome to play. I didn't like how magic worked though. I didn't get to use it until the end of the game. The game was on the easy side.

King's Field 2 was definitely harder and more troublesome. The maze like design was annoying and then some. It was more interesting though, and it was cool to finally use magic spells as well. I had less fun playing it but it was definitely an impressive and interesting game.

I highly recommend both.
