I talked about this in similar threads before. Dad would borrow several game systems. Dad would "lend" my systems "out to a friend" including all of my games and would never see them again. When I asked him about it he said his piece of shit friends sold it all and it would be the last time he would ever lend anything out to them. It only dawned on me a few years ago that the friend thing was likely just an excuse and he sold everything himself for beer/drugs. I mean, I knew the friends he used as an excuse and they were dirtbags themselves so it was pretty convincing. And this shit went on for like, 8 years.

The one ripping the boxes apart was me as a kid... never did the thought of keeping the games in the boxes ever cross my mind.. I took the game out (sometimes kept the manual - if it had cool art) and then ripped the fucking n64 boxes apart like they were nothing and then threw that into the trash.

My mom had her friend and this friend had a son. This son had, for some reason, a complete in box original famicom with some pirate games and an original R Type, and this pal gifted me the whole thing because he was going overseas and didn't like to play games anymore.

I had this famicom for like 2 months, and then one day when I returned from school, I didn't found the console. I asked around and it happens that my younger brother gifted the whole thing, box and games included, to a friend of him because yes.

Fast forward today, I still tell my brother he owns me an original famicom.

But months later my family was moving some furniture in the living room and my gameboy and Silver were behind the couch the whole time. My sister stuck it back there as a "joke" and forgot. The game still worked and I still have it to this day but my sister was not so lucky.

Man, I remember hearing stories from other kids at school about how their mom/dad threw out whatever thing they were collecting/just got. There were only a couple instances where my mom was going to get rid of some stuff of ours, and she would always preface it with "I'm gonna have a garage sale, do you want to get rid of [thing]?" Never a single game, comic, card, anything was gotten rid of if someone laid claim to it.

Eventually, a lot of it got handed down to the next generation of kids if nobody cared anymore. Nothing like getting to teach a kid to play Atari.

My sega master system broke (probably because I used the wrong power adapter in it) and I brought it and all my games to my cousin because he's good with electronics. I only saw him every few months so I expected good news or a diagnosis the next time I saw him. The next time I see him he tells me my other cousin came to visit him and he took the system and games and sold it for beer or something. I was just like "okay....". It was probably just a blown fuse which would be an easy repair for me today.

Years later I asked the second cousin about it and he called my first cousin a liar.

I wasn't too broke up about it because by that time I had a genesis, and the first cousin gave me a couple of nes games including Metroid, but damn some days I just think about playing Transbot again.

I have my own armchair psychologist theory that people are born with the natural instinct to use up all their available resources in some way or another. As you get older you get wiser and realize its probably not a good idea to use up everything you have. Parents scolding their children for being wasteful is a tale older than civilization. Unfortunately modern living has fucked with people's heads and they end up doing tons of stupid shit without a second thought. Some people throw things out always without considering if they actually have to or not.

Separate from videogames I've heard horror stories of people having all the furniture in their home re-arranged by an overzealous visiting family member. Or stories of roommates casually discarding every single food item in the kitchen without even bothering to check for an expiration date. Some people spend every penny they have on payday and are left begging friends and family for the rest of the month.
