A console released too late and with too few original titles to have any impact. Food Fight and Midnight Mutants remain the only reason to own this system.

Better than Atari 2500.

Has great ports of Ikari Warriors and Xenophobe. I think the 7800 also has the superior version of Dark Chambers, the unofficial Gauntlet prequel.

The 7800 port of Ballblazer is the definitive version. Compared to the Famicom port it's mindblowing, and pretty surprising that the 7800 was actually better than the NES in some respects.

Sound is absolute dogshit.

I like it. Backwards compatible and plenty of homebrew games. I do wish it had better sound though.

It could be argued that its Galaga was better as well and Robotron would have been tough to pull off on the NES with its 8 sprites per line limit.

Love this fucking thing. I use it to play both 7800 and 2600 games.

The 7800 was a significant jump in terms of graphics and sound, but they kept the same sound chip as the 2600. It got murdered by the NES.

>> No.5449482

It was designed to play early 80s arcade games really well, chiefly by having a huge number of sprites. Atari never imagined the kinds of games the NES would have and the 7800 had no provisions for cartridge slot expansion or battery backed saves, and it also cut a poor figure trying to do side scrollers.

Right? This could have saved Atari from going under. With the right leadership, this company could be a pillar of gaming today. Imagine Atari being another Nintendo in today's time.

Nobody would argue this.
The movement on the 7800 port was a joke.
The NES port was nearly arcade-perfect.

The NES port isn't 1v1 arcade perfect although it's probably more accurate because Namco made it themselves.
