532102 No.532102 [Reply] [Original]

Checked catalogue, no Dragon Quest thread, let's fix that.

I'm about to finish Dragon Quest (Warrior) III on the original NES version now, already got to Zoma, but he killed me because I forgot that I was supposed to use the sphere of light.
Going for another try now. These Putragons and Swordroids are really annoying on the way there.
At any rate, I'm excited I'm finally going to finish this game. It was a long road to walk

>> No.532189

dragon quest 9 is the only dragon quest game I've played and 'm really not that into it. Are the earlier games better or do you think I just won't like the series and shouldn't bother with buying the older games? Which ones would you recommend?

>> No.532229

>>532189
I've only played 6-9. I'd recommend you try 6 or 7 - but they are definitely similar to 9. I think you should try one more - really great games if you can get into them

>> No.532279

>>532189
Depends. What is it that's putting you off about it?

>> No.532284

>>532102
Isn't Zoma killable even without using the sphere?

>> No.532342

I'm starting out DQIII on the Super Famicom. What party should I roll? I wanted to go with Fighter/Cleric/Wizard because I like traditional parties, but I hear that the Wizard is pretty useless for the whole game.

>> No.532368

>>532284

I have no idea, but he raped my whole party in about 4 or 5 turns. Overall party level is 45.
I'm about to get him again now, I'll post results.

>> No.532381

>>532189
9 was cool in that it had a fuck ton of references to like all the classic games. If you haven't played the older ones then the references would probably be lost on you.

>> No.532382

>>532279
I don't like creating my party and my main character, it would be different if the characters had real personality but they all seem just like pawns. It also feels like every town I go to is its own little story and then once you complete it there isn't much reason to go back. It also feels kind of easy, I'm not looking for something that is so hard its frustrating but I am looking for some challenge and I also want something with a bit more weight to its story.

>> No.532390

>>532342

I ended up with cleric/warrior(soldier)/sage
I used a wizard and a fighter too at first, but then decided to grind a goof to level 20 to turn her into a sage, haven't disappointed me.

I think on the Super Famicom version there's also the thief class, and maybe another one.

>> No.532408

>>532382
I'll respect your preference for premade characters even though it's bad, if you want characters with personalities then you might want to look into DQ8. That one is also moderately challenging.

>> No.532414

>>532382

Play Dragon Quest IV, V, VI, VII or VIII for characters with more personality, DQ 3 and 9 are more about building your own party and making it customizable rather than the characters having personalities.

(I do enjoy the little talks between party members on III though, like in that one town where a girl persuades you to go with her alone, then when you come back, depending on the character you have places 2nd on your party, they will say different things. I think it has mainly to do with gender, but if its male your companion will say "had some fun?", and if its female "don't tell me, I don't even want to hear about it".. something like that, hah.

>> No.532427

>>532342
I went with brawler/thief/cleric, later changed thief into a sage. Worked really well, only problem was that the cleric was kind of low on HP, which made the last fight quite a bit tough.

>> No.532465

>>532382

Sounds like you want to play V or VIII. If you're not into the whole thing where each town/city has its own little self-contained story, then I got some bad news; that's pretty much what every DQ game is like. But as far as V and VIII go, the plots are pretty solid (especially V) and there's tons and tons of "party banter," meaning they have hundreds of flavor text and you can chat with them about what's going on pretty much whenever. I was most attached to the characters in those two games.

Thanks for all the help I think I might pick up 5 and 8 from the local retro store if they have them. I was also thinking abut getting the first one but thats just because I need an rpg to play on nes and it seems like its pretty cheap.

>> No.532661

If you want a NES RPG, then pick up Pool of Radiance (even though the other versions of the game are better). DQ1 is dull as fuck.

>> No.532776

Pain in the ass though.

>> No.532891

>>532342

You probably want a fighter and a sage. Thief is less important, but nice for last slot. They aren't the strongest, but they can use stuff like boomerangs to attack multiple enemies. Fighters just better than warrior since back then they had a agility>defense formula so you were still sturdy while being faster than a warrior, having more crits than a warrior and not having to spend a lot of money on gear like a warrior.

I'll note, when you unlock sage don't turn your cleric into the sage. Turn your cleric into a melee and one of your melee into a sage, that way you've got a backup healer. You might also want to wait a level or two to change the cleric until it gets revive(It'd kind of random within a few levels what level you get it if I recall, but low 20s). I turned my thief into a sage and my cleric into a thief, which worked nicely because thief actually has some mp growth. And of course massive speed is good for healing and like monk, makes them sturdier than they really have a right to be.

i think that 6 and 7 just get TOO MUCH DRAGON QUEST for some people. the series definitely escalates from title to title in terms of content, and introducing the alternate worlds and job systems in 6 and 7 makes the game seem, to me at least, a bit more convoluted than I'd want a dragon quest game to be. then they did kind of a "reset" with 8, and moved on to different things
