I think that if it wasn't for the last level Cryptic Passage is on par of the very first episode of Blood for its quality. They're all good, but those two gave me the best experience. Now i'm really digging into Death Wish and boy; it's too overwhelming, i think i need to pay extreme attention or else i'll miss some very good secrets. I don't think that's unpopular, most people who played it seem very fond of it. It's a solid episode with a very nicely done theme wrapping.

Problem is that not a lot of people got to play it, it wasn't on market for all that long, and didn't sell all that much. I only found out about it and played it because I got gifted Megaton Edition on the PS3, went in not knowing what to expect, and I was very pleasantly surprised.

how is modding or creating content for a build game different from modding doom?

is it harder or easier?

>> No.5080690

>>5080372
Harder.

Comparing say, Vanilla Doom, and Vanilla Duke, Duke can obviously do WAY more, but it's kind of a tricky format to work with.
Both are sector based, but while making levels in Doom is very easy, a lot of things in Duke aren't as obvious, or requires more thought and preparation.
There's a reason that Duke's modding community wasn't as big, because it's just not nearly as dead simple as modding Doom, which has an incredibly low bar of entry (but to do the really good stuff, it takes skill and dedication).

Both games were made to be modded by users however, and these days, with the source codes long released, and some prominent source ports, both of them can do a lot more than they used to.

>> No.5080930

>>5080372
Examples:

Doomdoor:
>insert a single tag

Doomdoor in Duke
>insert the tag
>place a M sprite in the door sector and then tag it for the sound
>insert a Speed sprite in the door sector and then tag it
>if you want it to be operated with a switch, a lock, or touchplate, you get the idea

shading in Doom:
>press a single key to shade the entire sector

shading in Build:
>you have to worry about shading every single surface individually

Build games are harder and more time consuming, and the map editor isn't beginner friendly especially if you're not used to the way things were in the mid 90's.
However, you have much more freedom on what you can do.

Don't change that mindset you have, Jewbox truly doesn't deserve your money for a game that is sold at three times the original price for a single new episode, the thing is that what was cut was tons of stuff and you seriously should consider the idea of pirating one of the "most recent" versions of the megaton edition before it pummeled on Steam. I'm playing that and between user content, a user-friendly workshop, the three add-ons already included in game (like this one >>5080218 seriously for this alone the aforementioned new episode can slurp my glans) you'll have plenty of fun. But that being said, that is if you manage to find said version that is alas, nowhere to be found. So you'll probably be fine with eduke3D or another sourceport that grants you to play the original stuff.

In fairness, you generally will be unpegging the sides of the doorframes (so the door track texture doesn't slide up and down with the door), as well as picking and aligning textures, unless you're either making a secret door, or you're just really shit at mapping.

But yes, a door in doom is a very trivial and brief affair.
Meanwhile, making a swing door in Douk takes some more work (and they're liable to kill the player accidentally, even if done as professionally as possible).

You can't limit FPS in DOSBox in a way other than lowering cycles, which causes the game to slow down dramatically in the more demanding places. Then you look at some wall for one moment too long, your FPS spikes to 140 for a second, and BAM!
You can see on the video how it goes wild from 40 to 80 and back in a scene that does not change much. The desynch is not always obvious as well, sometimes you may notice it only some time later after it happened when you encounter something like that webm, or your TNT starts going through walls, or you encounter enemies that get half-stuck in the ground because collision stopped working for half a second a few minutes ago.

Have you tried recently? IIRC they made a lot of improvements to stability and speed since the release of the initial preview.

Also you have to keep in mind that BUILD was, and still is, designed with a single core CPU in mind. It doesn't take advantage of multiple cores and its definitely not designed with GPUs in mind. Try running it in Software mode and see what happens.

>> No.5087757

>>5087746
It's same on both modes. There are certain places on the map, not even the most complex areas where something weird happens and stuttering begins. It's better on software but not by much.
It may play smoothly and show 100+ fps in a detailed outdoors area, then it will show 150+ and stutter like its 15 in a small corridor.
I'm not alone in this and some people have reported the same.

You don't seem to actually know what you're talking about yet you're really aggressive about it for some reason. I don't know how to explain it super well but I can try.

CRTs can do aspect ratio correction on the hardware itself. The art is drawn at 320x200 and then the monitor is meant to correct it to 4:3.
If you're doing aspect correction through software to a non-integer resolution you're going to have to either use linear filtering to smooth it out or you'll have random lines doubled. Notice how the font at the bottom here is inconsistent? It's because of aspect ratio correction. The art is 320x200 stretched.
640x400 on a CRT means you're getting pixel perfect picture. 640x480 means you're getting either a blurred image or having random line doubling. It's 4:3 in both cases but one is correct and the other is not.

That is going to be "distorted" to how it's supposed to look on a 4:3 CRT because the monitor itself is 4:3 and the image will be squashed. The end result will literally look the same to somebody looking at the monitor, whether he's playing at a 4:3 resolution or 8:5. Either you play on a CRT, or you use that resolution with DOSBox and get an awful aspect ratio.

Maybe we shouldn't be playing Doom on sourceports with modern widescreen resolutions and should only stick to multiples of 320x200 because muh 1:1 pixel perfection. You're such a fucking shitbreath virgin.

Why don't they make a proper GRP with all the new assets, so it can be used for sourceports, and mappers can use episode 5 stuff in their maps?

TNT > Grenade Launcher > Pipe Bombs

Shrink Ray > Spray Can > Sticky
- I don't actually like using the Shrinker as I find it so boring to use but as a weapon it's super powerful and better than those two. Spray Can however is very fun just to use.

Who do you mean by "they"?

Either way they probably don't want to do that because it would make pirating easier.

Also, if I understood correctly, the code for the Firefly and the flamethrower is a clusterfuck that includes hardcoded changes.

However if you want to make a map for World Tour, nothing's stopping you. It'll just only be playable with WT...

>>5095651
Megaton was good for what it was and what it did, especially making the add-ons playable easier, without having to go through DOS installers... but it wasn't a great port. No true widescreen, no original classic renderer and their opengl one is outdated and didn't look good, new glitches and old glitches were easier to pull off, which is why all speedrunners used that version and when all the clueless people starting spouting how glitchy DN3D was when it was Megaton.

I know that, just saying that in Megaton existing glitches were much more likely to happen, and that it also introduced new ones.

For instance speedrunners use techniques which should have a 1 out of 10 change to work and which work almost every time.

>> No.5096018

>>5095808
Because they don't give a shit. WT is a shitty port that was hacked together in a week to get a quick buck.
Anyway, maps and arts already can be used in EDuke, but to have all the new stuff, like weapons and enemies, you'll either need a WT's souce code or reverse engineer all the changes. Neither won't happen.

You can do a LOT more with them than you can with the pipebombs, in a much quicker way, and they are more powerful.
Not to mention that Blood's TNT has 2 firing mode, without even mentionng the 2 other types of TNT you get from ep2 onwards.

Thanks for the link. I'll see if I can run the expansions without the issues earlier.
Personally, it's not that much of a problem with Nuclear Winter because I agree with many fans it's the weakest of the 'official' expansions but especially with DC, it can be annoying to replay the same levels over and over again even if you can beat them quickly once you know what to do. Duke it out and Caribbean are on the same level as vanilla Duke in level design IMO.

A cyberpunk theme, cyborgs ,tracker musics.

If you look at Blood and Shadow Warrior, it's not like they had a consistent theme throughout anyway. Most of Blood's locations are non spooky, and the second half of Shadow Warrior could very well just be Duke Nukem 3D levels.
