Cloud is based on Miyamoto Musashi and Sephiroth is based on Sasaki Kojiro. Even though the story is that Musashi carved a wooden sword out of a boat oar, he keeps getting depicted as literally having his dual with Kojiro wielding a big old boat oar, which is what Clouds giant swords are based on. And Kojiro had a really long nodachi which is what Sephiroth wields.
