When you factor in availability, stats, abilities, and ease of capture, I'd say Slime Knight, Orc King, and Golem are the best.

Great Dragon would be the best if he wasn't an incredibly hard catch at the very end of the game.

One of these days I want to do a really dumb ROMhack where capturing a Dragon Pup/Small Fry in the second gen results in them growing into a Great Dragon after the timeskip.

Dungeon design, encounter design, less utterly broken shit, and better exploration. I like V's monster catching in theory, but the balance fucking sucks and you can easily trivialize any part of the game without intending to just by getting good recruits.

Two thirds into the game after defeating a big-time bad guy you enter a hole (named Giana on that image) and descend to Alefgard many years before 1 and 2 take place. See it as an "underworld" of sorts where the big bad reigns.

1 and 2 were so extremely dated I needed to take a break and play something more sensible.
Can you elaborate on that spoiler?
Does it mean that DQ3 is not actually set in the past but in the future and that the protag just so happens to time travel to alternate dimension of DQ1? Because that would genuinely make DQ1 a lot worse retroactively to me.

Why don't we have more jrpg protagonists like this? Where the main character is a nobody who just happens to be married/tagging along with the real hero/chosen one.

Even games that are similar, such as final fantasy x, there is still a hint of the main character being "chosen" or the obvious plot chosen one.

Despite how cliche and formulaic dragon Quest games can be, I don't think I ever related more with a character than the dqv protagonist. I really cared about his journey and his happiness

When I was a kid, I thought that line across his face was his nose, which meant he had to have a snout because it was so wide. That in turn meant that he must be some kind of beastman or dragonborn fucker, so the hair became ears, and the collar must have been a mane.
It was pretty intimidating and befitting in my mind for the leader of a race of monsters that opposed the human world and lived in the ruins of old towns and castles.

A decade later Dragon Warrior Monsters came out and he got updated spritework, and I found out he's just a goofy little man trying to sport the Dracula version of a pompadour. It was an odd realization.

Are these games good if you can get past the kiddy graphics?

>> No.5043157

>>5042908
That depends on if you like JRPG gameplay or not.
If the answer to that is yes, then they are good. Starting from IV, they also have some surprisingly good stories, and they're not at all afraid to punch you in the gut when you least expect it.

>> No.5043179

>>5042908
They're pretty decent gameplay wise, almost SMT-like especially V.

You can avoid VI and VII, they both use the "vocation" system which is kinda like FF's Jobs but incredibly tedious to level. VI is very bland, even Toriyama's designs take a nosedive. VII is just tediously long due to being made up of 20+ stories although a few of them are very good in a fable/fairytale way. The overall story is the standard DQ theme since II so isn't that interesting when you know where it's going. Also be warned, VII has some of the worst pre-rendered CG scenes of the PS1 era.

>FF1 is much less dated than DQ2

When was the last time you played FF1? I like FF1 but it isn't anywhere near the polish of DQ2. FF1 is very much a prototype of ideas taken from D&D and Wizardry stuffed in a DQ style game. Putting in a whole bunch of spells that are either bugged or pointless, having filler dungeon and a whole filler fetch quest line that takes up 1/3 of the game, which was probably done as Square's "test area" to see if they could make an RPG and then left it in the game.

Maybe you just googled it but whatever the case, to get the Hero out of the party you have to beat the Divine dragon in less than 25 turns (then 20 and after that rhe condition stays at 15), doing so he will grant you a wish from a list wish, one of those wishes is to revive Ortega (Hero's father) once he revives he will be at the Hero house talking with your mom, that's when you can drop the hero from the party, he will not be living in his house even more his parents will ask where in the fuck is he, this is on the GBC version dunno if it works on the SNES version though.
