You're searching, most definitely, for the Megami Tensei serie. Imagine this >>5027018
but not with cute fancy little creatures but instead demons, deities, folklore beasts and other examples directly taken from traditional culture or religion(s); challenging said demons is very entertaining because you can decide to socialize with them instead of fighting, often with the intent of recruit your personal legion. So there's plenty of variation when interacting with them, lot of options, and not the simple battle that feels more like rock-paper-scissors and only that in mechanics then anything; you also have, by demon fusions or for plot reasons, something of the caliber of Satan or YHVH themselves. Very deep game, totally recommend it.
