I just received my copy of pic related. I like the idea of the genesis port of the first three titles. I am honestly excited to see the unlockable bosses. I grew up on the first three, so playing a genesis port, will be refreshing in a weird way. What do you guys and gals think of The Wily Wars?

Looks interesting. Are the original Mega Mans even good?

I wish the euro version weren't so gat dang expensive is what I think.

I got to try it once and I seem to remember the movement being ever so slightly floaty compared to the originals. Am I just making that up?

2 and 3 are my favorites on the NES. X and X3 are my favorites on the SNES, even though 7 is pretty damn good. I would highly recommend giving them a shot.

>>4989447
I haven't played it yet. I just wanted to share with /vr/, once I opened it. I wouldn't be surprised though, if there was subtle differences with the ports. The music on the genesis, from what I've seen on youtube, is pretty crazy, compared to the originals.

I've played through the japanese version on my Model 1 Genny via everdrive and its not bad. It's wierd at first if you are used to playing the NES versions because Megaman is stiffer to control and he cannot fire as rapidly. The new music remixes are fascinating and fun to listen to and the graphics are more often than not just more colorful versions of the NES stuff beyond Megamans new sprite. Protoman in Megaman 3 is litterally just his NES sprite for instance.

All in all it's great. I did notice the euro version shits itself if you try to play it in 60 hz so i really hope thats a US or Jap ROM in that cart otherwise you'll have to deal with far more slowdown than you would have. I dont mean simple PAL slowdown either. I mean, like, actual sections where the game shits itself entirely as if its having trouble with too many sprites on screen or something.

I like what they did with Bomb Man's stage background. The sight of some futuristic, comfy city with those big ball-top structures towering way overhead gives me a good feel.

It's the US ROM from what was listed on the repro manufacturers site. Then again, that could be incorrect. We will see. I will be playing on a 2nd generation Genny hooked up to my 32" Sony Trinitron CRT.

The MD port was either rushed or cheap. It's nothing more than an NES game with more colorful sprites, coming across "NES-isms" like pic related, where the boss was literally the background layer moving around in a black room, is pretty jarring for a console of this caliber. I'm positive the whole giant-boss-that's-actually-the-background-in-a-black-room thing died off in this console era for good.

There is a patch to fix this. https://www.romhacking.net/forum/index.php?topic=25661.0

I uploaded a prepatched rom here in case anyone here doesn't want to bother with doing it themselves:

The ports are generally much weaker than the original games but it's still nice to play.

The new stages however are pretty cool. You get to build up your own arsenal with MM1-2-3 weapons and items, the stages have lot's of multipath and some cool bosses as well, and things that couldn't have been on NES.

You'll be sorry to have spent money for a shitty slowed down PAL version though.

Some do

I will honestly only purchase a repro that wasn't officially released, or was region specific. Or in the case of The Wily Wars, was only available via some dial up internet gaming service that was still in alpha compared to online gaming as we know it today.

the ports have some minor individual differences (megaman 2 music loops weird) and song quality can vary

the megaman 3 port turned out the best

It wasn't dial up though, it was a cable modem for the Genesis. It did a lot to help cable internet spread through the US since they had to clean up the signal to make Sega Channel work. By the time broadband was taking off large swathes of the country were already ready for it thanks to Sega.

I'm really glad I got to experience playing this game at a proper 60hz as a kid in the 90s. It kicked a lot of ass.

I both love and hate The Wily Wars. It's not because of everything that most people complain about, but rather a nitpick that bothers me to my core:

So, for the most part the artwork/sprites are the same relative size as they were back on the NES. The biggest exception to this, however, is Mega Man himself. For some reason, they enlarged Mega Man's sprite from the original, making him seem much taller than the likes of Proto Man, Roll, and even other Robot Masters, who all stayed the same size. In addition to this, it was ONLY the sprite that was changed. Mega Man's hitbox is still its original size, meaning bullets will pass right through his head and you wouldn't take any damage. Hell, when he fires, the lemons come out slightly lower than where his arm actually is.
It was obviously a last-minute change, but I have no idea why they ever did this. It pisses me off to no end and I hate it.

Sadly, The Wily Wars is an increasingly obscure game, and so as far as I am aware, there are no patches whatsoever that edit Mega Man's sprite to be its original size again, and actually line up with his hitbox. If somebody knows of a hack like this, or is willing to do such a hack, I'd be ecstatic to hear about it. If not, I'm going to learn how to edit sprites and do it myself, but that's not going to happen for a couple years at the least, with my shitty computer.

I think they did that to make it look more detailed, more "next gen".

You don't need a great computer to hack a Megadrive game.

However the task might be a little more complicated than you think, but it all depends on how the game handles its sprites and whether or not you can find tools/documentation to help, look on romhacking.net for graphical tools. At least you're going from bigger to smaller, the contrary could prove to be a little more difficult.
Your best bet is probably to use an NES sprite sheet as a base. Keeping some of the details like shadows will be impossible at times

There is also a very ambitious guy working on remaking MM4/5/6 in Wily Wars.

That guy should know everything you need to know, considering he already documented a few things maybe he'll be willing to help.

digging on that forum might also help

Lol indeed,it helps, same guy released this recently:

Maybe you can ask him to fix the hit detection and the Y axis spawn location of the buster shots. Doesn't seem to be in his list.

I uploaded prepatched roms for this. The 7z has both versions, with original button config and with the change, in zip files for easier storage and better emulator compatibility. I also included the text files.

ah, thanks for the help. My main worry is that I've never hacked or edited Genesis games before, but I guess there's a first time for everything.
And >>4995734 I want to edit the sprite, not the hit detection and buster shot spawn location. If I didn't edit the sprite, Mega Man would still be gargantuan standing next to Proto Man and other Robot Masters, so, yeah. I've got some work on my hands.
