I'm thinking about buying a Metal Slug game on the Switch but I'm completely new to the series. Which out of 1, 2, 3 and X do you recommend, /vr/?

I only have the money for one and want to know which is the best in the series. From what I'm hearing is 3 is the best in the series. It doesn't really have an overarching plot so it's fine to start in the middle.

3 and 2/X are the best ones. 1 is okay but i'd really only rec getting into it if you enjoyed the other ones. I'm not sure whether or not the switch uses the original 2 with the slowdown or a fixed version but if it does use a fixed version, take that one over X. X is supposed to be an improvement to 2 but it really just adds and changes a bunch of unnecessary stuff. Between 2 and 3 it's a coin toss really. Like mario 3 and mario world, they're both real good and it's more of a personal experience thing as to which you prefer. I will say that 2 is a bit easier though so maybe it'd be better for a first timer.

If I had to pick one and only one, X. There's just some levels I really love in that one.
3 is huge and awesome but I played it after both X and 1 and I think I enjoyed it more having already known the aliens from the previous game.

But really though, collecting for systems outside of Nintendo, Sega, Sony, and Microsoft is pretty hard where I live and nothing outside of them is all that interesting to me. Also collecting exclusively from eBay just sounds lame and overpriced. I'm pretty much limited to one Disc Replay but really I'm cool with that.

I don't have a PC at the moment, I'm a big ol poorfag. Also portability is nice. I prefer playing a game in bed or on the couch instead of being attached to a PC the whole time. Handhelds are just my preference.

Metal slug x not only fixed the atrocious slowdown but also the pacing, 2 is a fucking joke breeze then has a super hard last level where as x is more challenging from the off and gradual with a slightly easier last stage in line with the difficulty progression. None of its changes are "unnecessary " what an absolute moron.

All Metal Slug games are good and I highly recommend you play them all but I don't really recommend buying them on Switch tho. I bought Metal Slug 1 on Switch and while it's just like the arcade but the game is 8 USD which is way too much money. You would be better off with the Anthology Collection on PS4

My vote goes for picking up a copy of Metal Slug Anthology for the PS2, if you have a PS2 / PS3 laying around. It's a little under 30 dollars (according to price charting) and has all the games. It's the best bang for your buck, atm.

Here's what will happen with your approach : you will credit feed through the game a few times and stop playing not only just MS3 but most likely the entire series because they are superficially the same. It's inevitable for credit feeders. Playing it this way removes all the fun and challenge that comes from mechanics, level designs, bosses and other gameplay aspects, making the games just easily forgettable, passive, pretty light shows. Waste of time if you ask me, if youre going to be playing something why not try and make it as fun and engaging as can be so it lasts for a while and leaves an impression?

But is not a subjetive color preference. Metal Slug 2 was the original game and all the stylistic choices were carefully selected. Metal Slug X changed everything for the sake of change (and for being more different visually than MS2). Some changes are pasable, while others like the Desert and China stages are pretty awful, and in a game so visuallly important like Metal Slug, that's quite a thing.

They also changed some graphics in the China stage (removed the flying plane and the destructible boats), added bad guitar samples to the level 1 theme, and put the mars people right in the first stage, which makes no sense. I also don't like the Drop Shot weapon, which is quite annoying.

Anyway, the game has some good things, like better voice samples, more weapons, the mummy dogs, and a better ending. I don't remember the pacing issues as I haven't played it for a long time.

The thing is, both games have good and bad things, so I'd recommend playing both. I whish some could make a deffinitive version of this game with the best parts of both games.

No its primary purpose was answering all the complaints about 2s atrocious slowdown and balance which btw was due to a single line of poor code (trap15 fixed this last year) so they re-balanced the game and made changes to make it identifiably different for plebs who can't notice the actual game.
