What is the name of the early 80's(?) flight simulator that had phenomenally advanced graphics for the time, but required a $20,000(?) computer to run? Because that is 100% my answer. Someone here must know what I'm talking about. I've seen it posted here (or on /v/) once before. What is it called?

Found it. It's a lot more than $20,000, as well. More close to 20 MILLION. If anybody can show something better than this, I will be stunned.

This is something that Atari's arcade division was experimenting with in 1985:

In 1984 they were planning on making a polygon shooter based on the Last Starfighter movie.

I guess the hardware was too expensive to produce back then.

Honestly, I was never particularly impressed by Hard Drivin', not even back in 1989. The first time I was excited about 3D flat polygon games was when Virtua Racing was reelased. That smooth framerate and that classic Sega charisma made my a polygon lover.

Btw, I probably should go for Galaxy Force II or Power Drift for an impressive 1988 game, but Ghouls'n Ghosts had absolutely amazing 2D art for a 1988 game. The only game that MAY come close to it could be Altered Beasts. I literally couldn't believe those graphics back then. It looked like paintings.

In fact, people from Konami said in recent interviews that they were very impressed with the game when It was released, and Yuji Naka liked so much that programmed the game for the Mega Drive without persmission in 5 months. He also got the idea for the hills and slopes for Sonic The Hedgehog from Ghouls 'n Ghosts too. It was the first time when a plattform game didn't had only squared and flat platfforms in levels.

Can't argue about those quite-smooth-for-the-time polygon graphics (1989, damn...). But what the hell where they thinking in the sound department?! That fucking tire squeaking with EVERY goddamn streering movement?

Also, gotta love that incoming traffic, man! Trucks just casually going about their business driving through loops 'n' shit.

Something about those early supercomputer 3D visuals. They're less good than modern textured polygons in absolutely every respect and yet at the same time they're better and make you feel like you're looking into a fantastic limitless world. You know?

Dragon's Lair.

I remember some arcades demanding a full dollar to play it back then because it was so in demand for its visuals.

I remember that, I also remember Hard Drivin' being 6 tokens (1.50)

New games at the front of the arcade and $1 a play was the usual practice of my local arcade, which I frequented like 88,89,90
