I want this but harder. Give me one where you go back and forth and tear your hair out to try to figure it out. Where you have to really ration your supply and weapons. A quantum metroid-vania.

This. The game you want doesn't exist.

Does Genesis Cave Story have the hard mode? Might be an option.

But that's a different kind of game. Metroidvanias or whatever the meme name currently is have never been about survival or resource management.

La Mulana. I've only played the original
For retro, Knightmare 2: The Maze of Galious (the game that inspired La Mulana)

Literally Fuck You: the game. I mean it's not even a question of gitting gud

Yeah, but it's what OP wants, hard 2D sidescrolling exploration games

Try Super Metroid: Redesign.
Spoiler warning here.

Try Legacy of the Wizard. It's a metroidvania where you not only have limited ammo on your main weapon, but you also need to manage a supply of gold and keys to make progress through the game's labyrinth.

Not retro, but Axiom Verge (and take the hard difficulty) should fit your request VERY well.

Too big and unfocused. The changes to physics were horrifying (wall jump and morph ball only areas, I'm looking at you). It made some good use of mechanics that weren't taken advantage of in the original (like grappling through doors), but that's all I'm going to give it.

The only hard thing about SQ is the translation being misleading. It's a pretty easy game aside from that.

So, Faxanadu, Sorcerian, Ys 3 & Clash at Demonhead?

Also, forgot Castlequest/Castle Excellent.
That one will definitely piss you off.

It does and it's frustratingly hard. You never get more HP than the one you start with and the last stretch of the true ending is a literal bullet hell.

It's awesome.

Interesting, that actually gives me a reason to replay it. Really loved that game when it came out.

Hard metroidvanias exist now, but they're not """retro""" so I can't post about them here even as a relevant comment in an existing thread. He does it for free.

You tried Hyper Metroid yet?

Thought that one had a nice balance between your usual try hard romhack autism and actual progression.

>hints can be vague as hell
>solving a puzzle in one area may cause a minor change in a totally different area
>plenty of instant death traps and puzzles
>the "puzzle solved" sound will only play if you solve a puzzle and grab a specific items first

Have fun.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that you played the original version instead of the overhaul that improved it considerably.
