FFVII was something new in terms of visual/audio. Unlike anything we'd seen before.
It had no competition, it came in a time where players were STARVING for a good RPG game.

RPG is a genre name, like "Adventure". When we say we want to play a (Genre) game, we really mean we want to play a game that is of a category. You can't play a genre - that's nonsense.

And it's not literally a "Role Playing" game, as in a game where you score by role-playing. So while it looks redundant to write RPG game, semantically it's sound. Dropping "game" would change the subject from a game to a genre, see? When we say RPGs (Plural) that's called a synecdoche - a figure of speech were we refer to something by a part of it. Like using a city's name instead of a sport team's name. The team is not literally "the city", obviously, and you can imagine an instance where "city" is part of the city's name and end up saying something like Dodge City cities, possibly meaning other city's that the sport's team is visiting.

And in our case we are using the genre name to refer to an actual games. To reiterate, "RPG" is not actually a game, it's a genre. Final Fantasy is a game.

>> No.4704564

>>4704556
You put a lot of effort into that, and you're still wrong:

>I'm going to play an RPG
Literally: I'm going to play a role playing game.gramatically correct.
>I'm going to play an RPG game
I'm going to play a role playing game game. Not so correct, and rather redundant.

Same meaning, one makes tou sound retarded, end of story. Though tou're still gonna uber post another over thought excuse of a blog post about why everyone else is wrong though...

When it same out, it has zero real competition, had the best ad campaign as yet seen for any game, was plot driven and cenematic when that wasn't yet common, actually had fast paced gameplay, which the few other RPGs around did not, it had a lot of gameplay beyond just the main quest, tons of optional shit, and it has an enjoyable cast, plot and ost. It was kind of a perfect storm then.

Now, it's still the basic formula that all JRPGs strive for. Honestly, every dev, admittedly or not, would love to end up having their game be "the next FFVII". Even 21 years later. It's (like it or not) the best overall game the genre ever saw.

This is the most autistic post I've seen in a while. What point are you even tring to make? I'm a different anon but your use of "RPG game" makes you seem like a non English speaker since most of the English speaking world would simply refer to it as an RPG.

>Literally
You mean conceptually. Because as I just explained Role playing game is a genre name. It's one concept. It's a single concept. So interpreted "literally" you're playing that concept, which by itself is not a game.

>>4704572
The point is that there are people here who would mock something for sounding repetitive. When there's nothing wrong with being repetitive unless you're OCD and OCPD a.k.a control freaks. So now I'm mocking them for ignoring the significance of what was written. Outlining their own misconceptions to make them feel foolish and making them think twice before they pretend to be authorities of anything; video games topic and least of all language.
A taste of their own condescension.

basically it was Sony trying to vie with Nintendo. It was a big deal then, Ocarina of Time was shaping up to be a GOAT-tier game (Which it was) so they pushed FF 7 as that was the closest type of thing on PS to Zelda.

It was also going to be a big deal in its own right anyway, FF was a well established series before 7 came out and lots of 2D series were going into 3D era successfully - eg Mario, eg Zelda. So there was high hopes for FF 7 anyway.

It was also a really big game, had proper orchestral music, and for many in the Westwas a good introduction to JRPG style games.

Also around this time Pokemon was a huge hit, so turn-based-action was something people were used to.

Perfect storm of reasons, really. It also helped it was a good game, though I would say in hindsight its probably a bit overrated

You don't "it's a racing", or "it's an adventure". Likewise, you can't say "it's a roleplaying". But those three are the genres:

- "Racing" game
- "Adventure" game
- "Roleplaying" game.

"RPG" is shorthand for "roleplaying game". The genre is "roleplaying", just like "racing" is a genre, "adventure" is a genre. Instead of saying "it's a RPG game", you should be saying "it's a roleplaying game".

For comparison:

- "Gran Turismo is a racing game" as opposed to "Gran Turismo is a racing". It is a racing what? "It is a racing game".
- "Final Fantasy VII is a roleplaying game" as opposed to "Final Fantasy VII is a roleplaying". It is a roleplaying what? "It is a roleplaying game/it is an RPG".

By saying "RPG" you are saying it is a game that belongs to the roleplaying genre. Hence why repeating "game" makes no sense, because "RPG" is not the name of the genre, "RP" or "roleplaying" is.

The difference between "FF7 is a roleplaying game" and "FF7 is a RPG game" is that the latter tells you the game's genre "RPG" while latter says it's a game involving roleplaying which is false because you don't actually "roleplay" in any RPG. That's a misnomer.

What if I told you Cloud's "character" isn't really Cloud.
See, Sephiroth inherited Jenova's "reunion" ability to control. But "reunion" wasn't it's only ability. It's other ability was the "impersonation of loved ones" which manifested in Cloud.

Cloud was a mirror of whatever others wanted him to be. He became Zack. But he was still "cloud" because Tifa had her own memories that influences Jenova infused Cloud's identity. And the bad attitude was what Barrett expected a Solider to be like.

People don't get what makes Cloud and Sephiroth rivals in the first place. Sephiroth is the Ego. Cloud is the ID. Sephiroth developed a god complex with illusions of grandeur to compensate the fact that he was a freak accident. The whole "destroyer of worlds" this was his invention. But the truth was in Cloud - Jenova didn't destroy the ancients, it needed them to replicate/repair itself in the same way humans are dependent on the planet. Get it?
As a hybrid, this made Sephiroth self-sufficient and independently - but that's the crux of his relationship with Cloud. He can control Cloud. But Cloud having Jenova's "glamour" or whatever you want to call it. gave him the leverage to defy Sephiroth being strong-willed and independent.

This has interesting implications on Hojo's experiments with Cloud and Zack. Hojo write's off Cloud's catatonic state as Mako Poisoning. Hojo saw Cloud as an experiment, a puppet, and naturally that's the role Jenova's ability then performed.

Even FF6 dealt with psychological problems, further more FF7 did a shit job at dealing with anything, as presents a disgusting cheesy absurd world with looney characters and tons of invisible walls and unfinished minigames. And my final argument which puts any of yours into the grave:
Because of final fantasy7, final fantasy 15 is the disgusting cheesy shit game it is. Because marketing towards idiots makes the most money. And this is what marketing for idiots looks like. I bet you got an iphone.

Their are minute differences between characters that suggest certain FF "Classes" but it's really completely down to their limit breaks and which you prefer or if they have certain weapons like for example Cid's triple growth weapon or Yuffie's Comformer which is the only weapon in the game that makes Morph not useless.

Their level up stats are weighted certain ways for instance Barret has huge HP gain when he levels and thus he's more suited to heavy materia builds as they negatively affect HP and Barrets HP growth can offset it plus his ultimate weapon's strength is determined by how much AP his materia equipped.

Overall Cloud is the best Magic stat after Aeris so he's technically the next best healer but a Red XIII is fine too.
