Starting with a childhood favorite, Konami's Tiny Toon Adventures for NES, a very solid Mario 3 clone. You play as Buster but can transform into Plucky, Dizzy, and Furrball who each have their own special powers (floating, tornado attack, and wall-climbing respectively)

I played through Buster Busts Loose again last night, it's been many years since the last time I plowed through it. Every time I tried to play it, I got casual-filtered on the train level. In reality my problem was with the part you have to jump the logs Arnold throws at you, I always used dash+jump to get to the bandwagon, I thought that's how you were supposed to do it, and in fact you can, but it's really hard to do so, I fucked up like 10 times one after another. For the first time testerday I realized you can land on the bandwagon if you jump very early and do a long jump. Now I can play through this game anytime again with confidence.
It's not a long game but it's very sweet.
I loved the haunted mansion level, this part reminded me of one of the chapel level in Rondo of Blood, it has the same candles on the background. Even a sort of Dracula/vampir enemy appears in this part (and apparently you can't kill him).

The elevator part on the last stage kept me from beating this all through out my childhood. It wasn't until college that I sat down and actually finished the game.
Pic related was actually the first game I got for my psx. It's a JP action-platformer where you take the roles of compy, human, raptor, and finally t-rex. Switching between the different characters keeps things fresh, as they all have their own special attributes, attacks, and approach to navigating through the levels. Collectables that can be found in secret paths/areas or that require tricky platforming and skill add a nice bit of depth to gameplay and replay value - that is, if you can actually beat the game. It's fucking tough. I think the farthest I made it without cheats was deep into the raptor stages. The game also has superb graphics and sound effects for a ps1 game, as well as its very own orchestral soundtrack made specifically for the game.

>> No.4707821

>>4700215
Konami probably lost the license by then.
Infogrammes did their own take on Asterix later.
Don't forget that Infogrammes games in Europe on nintendo consoles were million sellers in the 90s.

While most games are average to poor, Asterix and Obelix on SNES was good.
Held back by poor hit detection and questionable design choices, but really pretty.
Same goes for Spirou and Tintin in Tibet, also eurocomics and using the same engine.
Not quite to the level of Prehistorik Man as far as good games go, but close.
A lot of the talent later joined ubisoft, etranges libellules and quantic dreams.

I remember it because it had a worldwide release besides Europe as a PC version with more languages (Brazilian in particular) but it was crash prone, and the button mashing sequences were too fast for human input if the game didn't run at 640x360.

A recent twitter thread uncovered design docs for it that included quite a bit of scrapped levels. They ported it to GBA with some of those implemented (but some levels cut to make place for them) and a terribad imitation of Konami's beat-em-up Asterix adapting the Egypt story more comprehensively but for some unholy reason to artificially pad the game without producing much content the designers thought it would be fun to go back and fourth in a very small area for each level until the boss spawns. Not suprisingly not even longplayers who go through shovelware bother with it.

GB port is a bastardized port of Genesis version with all of the fun sucked out.

Might be a good place to talk about when Konami repurposed their game engines for something else.

Based on a 2D platformer engine:
>Gegege no Kitarou (PS1)
>Kuro-Neko (PS1)
Based on a Castlevania engine:
>Hunter x Hunter Kindan no Hihou (actual GBC castlevania)
>Gegege no Kitarou GBA - based on HoD, platforming focus, has complete guide translation (Namco made a DS spiritual successor)
>Shaman King Master of Spirits GBA - two games, platforming focus (based on Aria of Sorrow)

TOSE made their own GBA Castlevania based on A Night in Christmas, and Capcom did a PS2 version based on a Devil May Cry prototype (US version added jumping to dumb it down). Both are good.

Speaking of Capcom, MMZ's IndieCreate had far more good licensed games than normal games. A lot of Shin-chan GBA/DS games exclusive to Japan and Spain, one about a Nobita manga with chibi Obama as a regular character, and the cancelled Klonoa DS games released as Klonoa games around their 3rd and 4th anime movies and named after them.

Master System Castle of Illusion is a different game. Then it got its own sequel as Land of Illusion. They're better designed as the Genesis version, but not quite as good as Quackshot and World of Illusion.

Sega was on a roll back in the days when it came to licensed games, especially anime.

GameFreak's Magical Talaluto for Genesis was a better game than its source material (which by the way, is not kid-friendly at all), and Aspect did GameGear titles based on Coca Cola and Yaiba that were easily some of the best on the platform.

They hired Treasure for an amazing Yu Yu Hakusho fighter. Same engine would later emerge on the DS for two Bleach games. Really worth it even if you don't give a flying fuck about those animes.

Even after they bit the dust, they still did a licensing deal for Osamu Tezuka works and three games came out of it, two on PS2 (an Astro Boy by Sonic Team, and Dororo Blood Will Tell, frankly worth it) and Astro Boy Omega Factor on GBA which is really a crossover of so many Tezuka mangas. www.youtube.com/watch?v=wYAZTsi9Po4

Tazmania ones were pet projects of Sega of America I think, but Garfield was the better one. Shame the Sega Channel sequel is lost forever.

Hercules was my childhood, along with Tarzan. A lot of developer crossover with Eurocom, Funcom, Shiny, etc, also involved in Gargoyles and Aladdin on the Genesis, and lesser games like Lion King and Pokahontas (probably better known for Earthworm Jim)

Different games, BBL has more unique mechanics and more interesting levels that are actually connected to the show.
BHT is more of a traditional platformer, borrowing a bit of Sonic with the whole gain speed/momentum thing.
I can understand you preferring one or the other, but to say one of them is "terrible"? nah bro, they're both great games and a testament to how good Konami licensed games were back in the early 90s.

>> No.4720306

Most surprising? The fact that The Little Mermaid on NES is really rather good.

>>4703034
IIRC, there was an episode where The Great Mary Sue (I mean Great Gazoo, sorry) magicked Fred and Barney into the future, but it's a bit fuzzy. Maybe it wasn't Great Gazoo. However it happened, I do recall that they were in the future and were signing for things at stores and restaurants thinking that signatures had become legal tender then growing irate when the credit bill arrived.

Looks articulated and explanatory enough to have been written by a grown man.
If you're referring to the fact he knows the characters names, that only reinforces the notion that it was written by a grown man, as Tiny Toon was only popular during the early 90s mostly. I don't think kids nowadays are familiar with the show.

The Genesis version has better level design but slightly worse off graphics, same team worked on RKA later.

Really different kind of levels and control mechanics, Genesis is more of a traditional platformer while SNES is focused on the dash mechanic.
The team for Buster Busts Loose also did some really cool Konami games, like Goemon series.
To be fair, it's hard to find a bad Konami game from those times.
