I want to avoid semantic bullshit as much as possible regarding what these really are, but you know what I mean. Let's talk about games like Castlevania: Dracula X for SNES, Powerslave for DOS, and Valis IV for SNES. Games that use assets, setting, and gameplay for the most part from the original game, but are modified drastically as far as level design and other elements go. I find these fascinating and wonder why they ended up like this, and what other examples are out there.

Are any of them actually better for this? None of the above are.

Doom 64. Not better than the PC games but pretty damn good.

Arcsys' Prince of Persia Super Famicom version.

New Generation Goemon PS1 was ported to GBA and somehow had a transformation from an average platformer to an actively irritating kusoge of the highest order with levels designed to be as unfun as possible.

Ultima IV for nes has better graphics than the megadrive version for some reason

Yeah, good one here. Still need to play through that hacked together "port" for PC. Anyone play both enough to know if it's totally fucked or actually a decent way to experience it?

Saturn Quake is a great example. Uses a lot of the same assets and general mechanics of the PC/N64 versions, but uses an entirely different engine (same one as Powerslave), and was pretty much built from the ground up for Saturn. It has some really nifty features, you can tell the devs put a lot of work into it. Cool intro screen, exclusive secrets like the Dank & Scuz comic, exclusive levels, etc. It takes awhile to get used to the controls, but once you do, it's a great game. Not counting mods and the like, it's probably my favorite version. The levels are a little shorter and more compact, and the enemies are bit easier, but it makes the game feel more fast paced and fun. Really just a great game, easily the best shooter on the console.

Source? Or just pulling things out of your ass? Ah, thought so. To port the game to Saturn, the devs removed lots of features from the PC version. They didn't "build" anything "from the ground up", it's just a gutted, worse version of the original. You Saturn fanboys will make up anything.

"Unlike the later Nintendo 64 version, the Saturn version uses the Slavedriver engine, which as the name suggests, was developed to power the Sega Saturn game PowerSlave. Consequently, all of the Quake levels had to be totally reconstructed for the Saturn version"

Lobotomy were probably the best Saturn devs of their day, and PowerSlave was pretty goddamn good. Been going through the PC version, and man, enjoying it less the more I play. The gunplay was never particularly great in the original, and trying to turn it into Duke3D instead of a metroidvania was a misstep.

Lmao, reading this back sounds so fucking cringe, especially after watching you get blown the fuck out in the next post. Are you the same guy that had that autistic breakdown in the Saturn Quake thread and started screaming about how it was inferior and shouldn't be played?

I really need to play the Saturn original. I cheaped out and bought a copy of the PS1 version, and man, it just fucking sucked. The Saturn version seems like it would be a million times better. PS1 felt so janky and the graphics were shimmery as fuck.

I played through the Saturn version in Mednafen/Retroarch pretty recently. To be fair they aren't drastically different, though oddly enough the Saturn version has more geometry here and there despite the PS1 normally thrashing the Saturn in the poly count department. Framerate's a little worse on Saturn, though. Just saying, it may just be that the game might not blow you away regardless. If fidelity and performance is what you want there's a hacked together PC version, but it features assets from the PS1 version. It'll do 60fps, mouselook, HD, widescreen, and all that usual shit though.

>>4677714
"the Saturn hardware restricts the screen resolution to 320x240 and makes cuts in both polygon counts and texture sizes"
Yup, sounds like the version was restricting more than it was adding. Guess I'm right after all, another win for me (what do you know).
What you're referencing is the engine, for which they tried to copy the PC's, but it just doesn't feel as good. It will always be a bad port

You said, "the devs removed lots of features from the PC version. They didn't "build" anything "from the ground up", it's just a gutted, worse verison of the original". They didn't remove or "gut" anything because removing and gutting implies there being an original engine to remove things from to begin with. The engine was built for Saturn, hell even the assets are different and just made to look similar to the PC version. It's an entirely different game. I don't know why you hate the Saturn so much but making yourself look retarded isn't a good way to spite Saturn owners. Did Segata Sanshiro touch your pee pee or something?

>Ports that weren't really ports
>Powerslave for DOS,
>wonder why they ended up like this,

The DOS version of Powerslave isn't a port, it's the original version. The Saturn version was supposed to be the port. As for how and why:

Original Build game was being developped by Lobotomy Software to begin with, but at first it was being published by Apogee/3DRealms. It was called Ruins: Return of the Gods at the time, pic related.
Then, 3DRealms gave up on them; and when they found a new publisher, that new publisher said "okay, but only if there are console versions".

The initial plan was to port the DOS version to Saturn, but they quickly realized that, at the time, in 1995-1997, it was easier to have something like Build on PC, but easier to have something full 3D on console. Think of how awful the Saturn version of Doom is. PCs had better CPUs so things like Doom/Build which are 100% CPU bound was fitting, but console had dedicated 3D hardware which wasn't yet a norm yet on PC at the time.

So; they made a new Powerslave game using the same assets, one that would take full advantage of the 3D capabilities of the Saturn; and all this time the PC version was already 95%+ done; but ended up being released a
couple of months later anyway.
