How should I go about playing this series? I have a SNES and PS1, but I'm not sure if those versions were even released in english, or what the better of those two options would be

Start with 5 on the PS1.

With a slighty decent pc you can play all the main series,I don't see why would you need to use a snes or a psx

They were never given a US/EU release, but the Japanese releases has options for English text. A slight cavaet is that it only has the original English text which comes into play because the PSX version actually adds a lot of QoL features such as descriptions for spells but the new written text does not have an English equivalent.

That being said, I would still recommend the PSX version since it contains the same amount of English text as the old games - sure, the spell descriptions are in Japanese, but in other versions they aren't even there at all, which means it's not like the PSX versions loses anything.

I'm also quite certain that the SNES version makes changes to the dungeon for no real reason while the PSX is more faithful to the original.

The only map change I know of is a laddar instead of a pit in the 2nd scenario to make it playable without importing a save from the 1st scenario.

Probably start with the one that looks the gayest.
